Mullin Stepping Down

Finally a SJU surprise announcement I'm happy about! Sorry Chris' coaching foray had to end with disappointment but one Hall of Fame career is probably enough to hang your hat on. Still total respect for Chris as player and person who overcame some tough challenges. Glad Cragg did what was right for the players, fans and ultimately for Chris himself. Now please please please let's make our first solid coaching hire in 20+ years!

Forbes:: Chris Mullin Is Out At St. John's, Bobby Hurley Expected To Be Targeted
Adam Zagoria

Chris Mullin is out as the head coach at St. John's, and will be bought out soon, according to sources.

Jon Rothstein of CBSSports.com first reported the news via Twitter.

St. John's is expected to target Arizona State head coach Bobby Hurley, the Jersey City, N.J. native and former Duke legend, Rothstein reported. Iona coach Tim Cluess could also be an option.

Mike Cragg, the school's new AD who came to St. John's from Duke, declined to give Mullin a contract extension, multiple sources said. Mullin, 55, has two years and about $4 million remaining on his deal. He would have been a lame duck after next season without an extension.

"Let me be clear and I said from the start, Coach Mullin is our head coach and we are not looking for another head coach," Cragg said on Saturday in a statement that has marked his only comments on the matter.

Mullin, meantime, has not spoken publicly since the end of the season, and did not respond to text messages seeking comment.

Mullin went 59-73 with one NCAA Tournament appearance at St. John's.
Bobby Hurley would be a game changer for us. He’s a details-guy and unlike most of our prior coaches. Will recruit extremely well here and we will be prepared for games. Hope those rumors come true. We’d be in good shape. In Cragg we trust..
How is Bobby Hurley a game changer? He hasnt won anything as a coach! He said on NATL TV that his brother is his gp to person and teacher, good luck getting Precious over Danny at UConn! Pitino walks in and Precious commits next day! Watch!
It's going to be Hurley.
Yes it is, ink drying...............

Apparently CBS Sports does not know that there are 2 Hurley brothers coaching in D1 as evidenced from the below paragraph:
"As for who will take over, Arizona State coach Bobby Hurley is the Red Storm's top target, according to Rothstein. Hurley has ties to the area having coached at Buffalo and at Rhode Island. He led the Sun Devils to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, but bowed out in the First Four in each."

But....but...Mullin has relationships with all the local high school coaches, we can't lose his influence in scoring all the local big time recruits!

I said Mullin was gone! Pitino is the target! Hurley the distraction! Tenn and STJ will fight for Pitino. The leak now about Mullin has everything to do with Barnes/UCLA talk
If Pitino comes you get all the credit in the world. If Hurley comes credit is going to go to someone here who doesn't post rumors who told me and another person this might happen during the big east tourney

Please not Rick Pitino and all his schtick and baggage - and I hope Chris is more relieved than bitter
Hope matters end amicably
No time for bitterness and finger pointing
Blessings

He was an assistant for his brother at URI...

That is a true statement.

Pitino is a sure thing for 6-8 years and could leave it to Jr. to take over.

Hurley is my choice. I want the two guards he has signed. The JUCO kid is insane. Hurley is a college guy through and through. It would be bush league to prevent any PG who committed to play for Hurley from following him.

Oh, and Cragg is a monster!

Can’t say I’m not excited. Also hope relationships weren’t ruined.

Would be happy with Hurley but let’s be diligent with this one. Similarly to SJU pigeonholing themselves with the Mullin hire (no one else would have it wasn’t for his relationship with the school) I hope Cragg doesn’t do the same in regards to Hurley. Only reason you’re hiring him should be cause he’s the best man for the job.

Hurley checks all the boxes. Young, hungry, great pedigree, tireless worker etc... He’s a local Jersey legend too. I’d be thrilled with this.

I read somewhere that the point guard he has signed, his dad played for ASU. So not sure he could get him to come over

I dont want any credit! Like everyone else I want a winner again before I pass on to the big Johnny alumni in the sky! I am just passing detes that were passed to us! The big donors which I said are cutting off the money! I am not as big as some but I joined them! Pitino or bust! Hurley was to keep Pitino price supressed. Tenn now may lose Barnes and Tenn put out feelers, which were intercepted which forced the announcement now. I would prefer the Pitino package for 5 years with him grooming his replacement. I know Hatten is joining in some capacity no matter who the hire turns out to be. We had meetings to discuss upping the donations! Cragg is slick!

... I think he'll have them frequently inside the top-25 and on the right side of the bubble most seasons.
Awesome. Let's already start the unrealistic expectations for the next guy, so we can force him out in four years.
Hiring a new coach will bring all posters together and bury many hatchets.

(for 20minutes) :)
Nope. Not even. Get the knives out for the next guy.
