Monasch Out

@RogRubin: St. John's to replace AD Chris Monasch. Alienating PGA star Keegan Bradley was among his missteps. NYDN:http://t.co/YuWtpz95Nf.

It seems to me - an acknowledged 'outsider' and non-SJU grad "just a fan" - that it would be untenable to have superlative people as President and as Head Bball Coach and a considerably lesser level occupant in the third key position of athletic power. Simply needed an upgrade.

Just another indication that we are headed into the "big boy" high quality rarified atmosphere - it is possible and probably for St John's to be in this class
And now with Bobby G and Chris M
It is inevitable.
Just such a nice time to be a fan....no not of "the Cuse" or UConn...but of NYC's team.

Priceless. Priceless.

I agree with you. In the past year, St. John's has, for the first time in its history, hired a layman. It fired a relatively successful basketball coach and replaced him with a local legend. And it also went out and spent a fortune on assistant coaches to help in the effort. I think its as simple as there is a new regime at the school and Chris Monasch was always going to be on the outside of it.

I was not particularly a fan of his, but when you really look at the body of work it wasn't terrible. Yes, he stuck with Norm Roberts for too long. But he made a solid hire in Steve Lavin and like it or not, he changed the perception of the basketball program. Non revenue sports flourished (soccer, baseball, softball, etc.). Lacrosse was brought back to the school. All in all, positive steps for the university. But the school obviously wants to bring in a Chris Mullin ally and that's probably going to be in the form of Pete D'Alessandro.

In hindsight, looking at Monasch's limited role during the press conference announcing Chris Mullin, his termination may have been in the works at that time. The Bradley incident certainly couldn't have helped. What was the guy thinking!

Can someone update us on the alienation of Keegan Bradely...what happened?
Thanks.

I recall Bradley being very upset when the golf coach was fired

From what I've been told by other posters, the firing had to happen. Keegen was upset with the firing, but I think he was even more upset that his teammate was passed over for the job and his opinion was sought out.

You have to pick your battles. Not involving Keegan in the decision after firing the coach that he loved was just foolish. It's such a low key program and such a high profile alum. And doing that when you know you are on shaky ground to being with?

He wasn't the AD when it was decided to bring back Men's Lacrosse. As part of an overall reorganization of the Sports Program to ensure compliance with Title IX, in 2002 Football was disbanded with Lacrosse returning In either 2003 or 2004 after being disbanded in the 90's. Dave Wegzyn was the AD at the time.

What actually did the golf coach do to be fired. Does anyone know ?

I'm confident posters on this site know exactly the reason the golf coach was fired.

I was a fan of chris monasch I did not always agree with some of his moves particularly letting kim Barnes Arico leave for michigan. But chris did a great job under an aloof self-centered president and his yes men pellow and wile. I know from sources he wanted norm gone after year 5 but was overruled, he brought in lavin who re established the program (his year 1 was like an oasis opening up after wandering aimlessly in the desert for what seemed like an eternity) was there missteps sure could he have been more gregarious maybe. Chris tried facilities improved, better direction etc. it's a different regime now and I wish the replacement the best to get us to the next level. With that said I want to thank chris for carrying the St. John's torch and wish him the best in the future.

I don't think he had much of a choice in Kim Barnes Arico leaving for Michigan. She left for a bigger program that pays more.

Not to mention the replacement hired, Coach T, has done a good job with the program

From my view as a fan this seems to be a very fair and objective post.

Ann Arbor and her kids led to KBA leaving, nothing CM could have done about that.

The Program improved under him, thanks CM.

Let me say this. Some of you didn't believe my info but the fact is Monasch was forced out days before Lavin was let go. President was very fair to him (or too fair if you ask me) he was allowed to hit his bonuses and announce his departure as resignation not firing. Once again the reason this was announced now is based on dates/bonuses. His firing is not really based on school athletic accomplishments.
by the way- there is a reason De la Rosa brothers transferred and it has nothing to do with basketball or academics.

If Adonis' case has nothing to do with basketball or academics, then why is he going JUCO?
