Mike Vacc on Chris

All the posters on Redmen.com can voice their negative opinions about Mullin and it will have very little effect but Mike Vacarro's article in today's Post would certainly get my attention if I were Chris. Vacarro's article basically says it is year four and Chris is not doing his job.
You will now see other reporters pick up on this opinion now that a respected journalist has voiced it and the idea of replacing Chris that to me seemed very unlikely at the beginning of the year will get some legs.
Chris should immediately increase his recruiting efforts.
TO me, what will be more important is how the team comes out to start the game. Fired up - good; lackadaisical and disorganized - very, very bad.
While of course important, it's ridiculous that we have to say that about a team that lost in just about every way possible during the past few weeks. Feels like Groundhog Day. We "lost" to Hall in a heartbreaker after blowing the lead. We blew leads against Nova and Hall. We were upset at home against DePaul. We got blown out at Butler. We lost our best player and then got him back. We've also had redemption/success in between, but every time we've achieved that we threw it away. How many more ways could we possibly lose for this team to get the message? Do we need to lose 11 in a row like last year? Do we need to play ourselves out of the Tournament first?

Going into yesterday's game, we had lost 3 of 4 games and were playing in front of a nearly sold out crowd at home. Going into Wednesday's game, we will have lost 4 of 5 games and will be playing against a sold out crowd on the road. I don't see that as a better position to be in, but who knows with this team.

This isn't directed at you ctstorm, but I'm just tired of excuses after each game, the post game quotes about needing for focus for 40 minutes, etc. It's nearly impossible to be optimistic when we keep seeing the same results.

You are wondering what the guy who pushed Brian Mahoney on the program thinks about Chris Mullin?

confident or just bull blanking (no cursing) people.

Here is the disconnect I think. For some of younger posters Chris Mullin is just some old guy they seen in short shorts on old clips. Sort of like Yankee fans seeing black and white clips of Mantle or Met fans seeing old clips of Seaver. For me I actually saw ST John's in a Final Four. I will repeat that sentence. ST John's was in a Final Four. I actually watched it. Unfortunately. See that is something that will never, ever happen again. So yes going to stay loyal to guy most responsible for that freak occurrence until the bitter end.

I saw it as well and unfortunately I don't have fond memories of that game. The first Georgetown game that season was probably the most exciting St. John's game I ever watched ,the other three not so much. I still love Mullin but coaching St.John's is not an easy gig and I am not sure his heart is in it.

I’m miffed at the players for sloppy, undisciplined, lackadaisical ‘my shot first’ play, and ticked at the Staff for not reining this in sooner and ñot having the team hungry and edgy with a week’s rest following the Butler loss, but let’s not drink the hemlock yet.
Let’s hope the Staff lights a fire under this team to play to its potential game in and game out, this last stretch of the season before the BET.
Honestly, I don’t know what to expect.
All we can do is root like hell for St. John’s.

I'm not ready to drink the hemlock, but I'm also tired of drinking the Kool Aid. I do agree with the rooting part.

I told this forum in year one, after the first handful of games, Mullin was encouraging those shots. Giving most of the team the "green light."

I watch the FF also WAS, igreat memories.
He took the coaching job 30 years later, he still has to recruit and coach, what is he making 2.5 million?
Just because he's the sju legend (as a player), doesn't mean he's untouchable as coach.

I never said that. Just explaining why I am still pulling for him. You know besides the fact that I root for ST John's basketball. Do think criticism started kind of early on. Way earlier than would have thought.

Dude this is year 4, last year I said I'll give him next year, but no excuses.
Well a year later we added LJ and Heron, people were saying we got the most talented roster in the league, should finish no wore then 3rd, but we're 3-5 and in last freaking place.
There's no excuse for this, and it sounds to me like Chris is losing this team, that's never a good sign.

Nothing in 4 years is unacceptable, and if I'm Cragg I tell Chris (not ask) that mitch is gone and we're adding another recruiter. Then it's up to Chris wheather he wants to stay or leave.

I don't care who you are, #1 in a coaches job description is to win, if you can't then either get help or leave.
It's that simple.

There’s only one kid in the starting 5 that I never ever find myself muttering “no! no! no!” when touches the ball, and that’s LJ. Love that kid’s game

Agree LJ plays so intelligently and in “old school” manner. Refreshing! (Yes that pull up, off balance 3 at critical juncture Sunday was ill advised, but not the norm for LJ for most part.)

I like LJ a lot, but I'd rather have the ball in Ponds hands over anybody on the team and it's not even close. As Paultz alluded to, LJ is an old school heady player. That said, I don't think he has the athleticism or the skills to be a team's primary scorer. He is a terrific third option. Will be interesting to see how he fares next year when he may be required to carry on more of the scoring load.

Ponds is so creative and skilled that he can take nothing and turn it into something. That's not L.J.s mindset, or skill set. That's why he leads the team in FG% and ranks high in the league. No roster with Ponds, Figgy and Heron should be tied for last in the conference. Just makes no sense.

First 9 minutes of SNY's Sportsnight last night was devoted to the G'town game and the state of the program.

I like him too but that three was not a good shot and "no, no, no" would have been justified.

If you can remember the number of bad shots Figgy has taken, that's a good thing. It would take Jerry Lucas or someone who took his memory course to remember the bad shots taken by others on the team.
