Mike Repole Piece

Repole and Pitino are two New York guys who love to win and enjoy having a microphone in front of their mouths - win or lose.

I would vote for having an assistant coach attend all press conferences after every loss. It also might be a good idea for Mike to have Pletcher or one of his other ten trainers speak to the press after his horses lose a race.

Ah, he should put the horse in front of the press.

After all, the horst lost the race, let him face the music himself. LOL!

I obviously know all about the separation of NIL and did not mean to imply there is a “hunky dory” Board relationship w Repole, but things are in a better place overall re he and the University after his ill advised WFAN rant specifically targeting Board members. I just think Shanley reduced the temperature of the situation over time and has a reasonable relationship w MR In NIL era we need Repole but it does not mean you sell your soul to him either.
Good post. Repole obviously put himself in a bad position with a advised rant to embarrass the university to move towards nobby hurley, but i guarantee he loves sju basketball and wants us to succeed at the highest level. He has quietly been a major benefactor of NIL and has the capacity to be a game changer.

Shanley to me appears to be an introvert, unlike say, Father Peter at Nova who literally knows thousands of alums, students, and supporters with whom he warmly engages. Shanley often keeps to himself even at public gatherings and fundraisers, comfortable at the microphone but content to engage almost entirely with Chris Vaupel who appears almost as his valet for lack of a better word. He does appear to be far more interested in sju athletics than running a university. There are so many divergent directions of a Catholic University that leadership is often bound to please some groups while eliciting outrage from others.

Repole being back obviously a great thing. He has the capacity to be a game changer and his pockets are very deep - almost singularly can finance any and all of Rick's targets. At this point his role is low profile which he probably knows is a better thing.

Thanks for your excellent posts.

I wonder what JSJ's take on this is?

Speaking of what many here called an "ill-advised" WFAN rant, let's remember the context. Mike R called in (a la "Mike from Middle Village, first time-long-time") to Francesa's talk show and the two of them berated the School, the Board, the Presidents, everyone, they went scorched earth.

Funnily, in the NYP article, Repole said Pitino's rant on Sunday reminded him of his own WFAN rant. He would laugh at it being called ill-advised, he said "Pitino's was a breath of fresh air and necessary. It was good for the School and team to hear Rick." Shortly thereafter (a mere few hours) Rick apologizes several times for the rant.

Go Figure!

#LGJohnnies, as Herb Brooks said once, "if we play them 10 times, they beat us 9, but not today, today we play with them, today we play our game, today we shut them down, today we win." #BeatCreighton

Feel everyone knows- Pitino MEANT everything he said... he was being truthful after Seton Hall... albeit a bit too candid for some.

His apology was more "I am sorry if I hurt your feelings... love my guys... I'll make sure to recruit better next go around"

The more I think about Repole’s tweet, which was as reassuring as reassuring can get, the more it makes me wonder if a recruit and his “handlers” will use his tweet as leverage in “negotiations” with St. John’s.

Excuse me if this was posted elsewhere, but how do you not get excited when you see it

The only problem is that is sounds like the NIL is all him.

Obviously, I hope nothing happens to him, but something does, is anyone else around to pick up all, or at least most of, the slack?

Fear not. The SJU’s NIL is not solely coming from Repole.
I get that, but if something were to happen to Repole (which we don't want), I would imagine they wouldn't be able to fully replicate what he brings. I just hope it's not too much of a loss.

Dickinson on KU signed for 1.2-1.5 mill last year. So Repole's "all-in" comment is very curious to me. Will we actually be swimming at that end of the water?
