I wonder how MA will handle the increases in state income tax in NYS vs. Arkansas. Arkansas top tier tax rate is 6.9% in a progressive tax. NYS is almost 8.8%. I wonder if MA will establish residency here (more than 180 days per year) and pay the higher tax rate (around $55,000-$60,000 per year additional) or will he be running back and forth to Arkansas to avoid the higher tax rate.

Although the efforts were questioned, Both Lavin and Mullin came from a state with a state income tax rate even higher than NY.

No doubt MA appears to be a hard working guy, but at his income level, state tax considerations exert a heavy toll.[/quote] Just my opinion but 50-60k when you are making lets say 2.5 mill ( I have no idea how much Iron Mike is getting paid ) but personally I cant see that being a factor to avoid taxes. You'd have to factor in traveling back and forth to Arkansas also which would lessen the savings. Not to say he doesn't go back but my gut feeling is he will be spending a lot more time on campus than the last couple of coaches

People going to Florida to avoid state taxes is a different story.

This is comic relief.

So far every single thing CMA has done at St. John's, from his work ethic to keeping the team together to his AC hires, has been exceptional. Even early on when certain posters were concerned about his "slow" hiring of ACs or LJ not recommitting immediately, he ended up proving the doubters wrong.

Just like with Cragg during his "slow" HC hiring, CMA should be given benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise. I really like their style of thinking things through rather than reacting too quickly (or not quickly enough).

FINALLY!!!

NOW we know why Mullin lobbied so hard for this job only to spend 5 months a year in Cali. He wanted to beat the 13.3% tax rate and still spend his summers by the bay.

He was saving a whopping $110-150k a year!!!

I look forward to the next coaching search when we analyze tax percentages per state when looking into candidates!

Coach Anderson was let go with 3 years left on his contract at Arkansas. What he got paid out or settled on I have no clue but it had to be a few million dollars. Some 3 weeks later he is hired by SJU and has to be getting at least $2 million per season. I would think in his mind he won the lotto and is way ahead in every financial way possible as a result of him getting paid by U of Arkansas.
I can’t imagine the increase in State taxes of 1.9% annually being of any concern to a 59 year old man who has been very well paid for at least the last 27 years if not more.

Not to mention, given the outstanding character of the man, I can only imagine that he pays his taxes and mainly feels grateful that he is fortunate enough to earn the kind of income that produces that level of tax payment.

Steve DeMeo may not want to take SJU assistant position and come back home since he will have to start paying NY and NYC income taxes as opposed to being in Florida which doesn't have an income tax. #dumbarguments

I agree with your sentiments but it is also a fact that many current professional athletes, most notably some of the highest earning golfers and tennis players, have taken up residence in states or countries where their income is either not subject to tax at all or to a substantially lower tax rate.than where they previously resided.

Athletes are also taxed I believe based on their road games in some weird way. So that’s a reason they cut corners where they can

State income tax is the least of the things MA is thinking about right now. He is looking to cement his legacy as an outstanding coach and his clearly not hurting for money. The ultimate non-issue.

Mark athletes have no where near the high earning years that coaches do so yes moving to a tax free haven makes sense. Eugénie Bouchard who lives just a few blocks from me I believe moved to the Bahamas a few years ago to avoid Canadian taxes. If CMA can coach until age 70 he will have 32 very high earning years. The higher taxes become much less important over time if you have many high income earning years.

I didn't want to sound like I was bragging, but I made $71 million last year. When you are as rich as me, your time becomes more valuable than whatever you would lose in taxes. I'm sure fellow rich guy MA feels the same.

Back to Borman who already lives in NY :)

The $35.00 (I know, ridiculous prices out here) lobster rolls not the cheap Mc Donald's type (yes some Mc Donald's sell them).
