Mike Anderson

I didn't know much about Anderson as the SEC is a league I rarely follow and when he was at Missouri it was the Norm years and I was on sabbatical from the college sport. Looking at his record at Arkansas, I personally can live with those results but unless he betters that at SJU most here will be unhappy and killing him before too long. In eight seasons he made the NCAA's three times and the NIT twice. In the last nine years SJU made the NCAA tournament three times and the NIT twice, which got two coaches fired.

Considering that Paul Hewitt was actually in the mix - sure this is great. In fact, tossing out Pitino, I don't think the school could have done any better. But I do think some of the wild eyed optimism is over the top. He seems like a good guy and of course I will be rooting for him to wildly succeed but the odds don't support that happening. At least it's not Hewitt which was the equivalent of folding the program.

Two points about Anderson - his teams play defense and they share the ball. Both of those keep you in games and promote team chemistry. We had talent last year, did neither and the lack of chemistry and a less than ideal locker room atmosphere led to results that speak for themselves.

We were 0-5 in those post-season tournaments in those 9 years.
Anderson posted a 2 - 3 record in 3 Dance appearances and was 2 - 2 in Two NITs over 8 years.
When the records are parsed, Mike's performance is leagues better than our performances over roughly the same time frame imo.
Hopefully, Iron Mike can catch a good tailwind here.
We shall see.

I think we should give Coach Anderson the freedom to build this program the way he chooses. He may not be at a couple of gyms today as reported by a couple of tweets. I am sure he has been working non-stop since he came here.
There are going to be a lot of glass-half-empty fans that are going to take issue with the way he builds this program, but he is the guy responsible. Why not give the man space to do the job.

Yeah some of you micromanagers (on here and Twitter) need to chill out a bit and let CMA do his job. He has always been a hard worker and so far we've seen that. He's out there doing practices in April and has already been mentioned with some transfers. Borman we know can't sign until July (worth waiting). Hsu/LJ is an odd situation, but I wouldn't put that on CMA. Seems like Hsu playing games and trying to get more out of us.

Visiting high schools and making connections with local high school coaches is part of CMA’s job. He can take as long as he wants to build his staff but without assistant coaches at the moment he has to do all of the heavy lifting. It would have been nice if he went to a few local high schools for their open gyms this week and would have showed the local high school coaches that he wants to build a relationship with them. He might have been busy and does plan to make future ones but I want to see a tireless worker and not only be told he is one.

Exactly Frank, not only space but time. Coach has been on the job 4 or 5 days. Let's not panic. I expect we will have 7 or 8 kids returning, even if Figgy decides to leave and I fully expect a few nice late additions - TJ is a proven strong recruiter.

So what is he supposed to do, clone himself or rush an AC hire with obvious question marks? I'd like to see him working with the current team first and foremost. Those relationships are critical and the biggest recruits we have for next year.

Sorry, you are correct. I guess I just expected that he would be able to make a few local open gyms.

This is an insane comment. How do you know whether he has or has not visited local high schools? Also, what makes you think this is a higher priority thank the 7,000 other things he as to do on his fifth day on the job? Come on.

Now that we've had a few days to digest the end of this bizarre and often clownish coaching search, it it truly amazing that we were able to get Mike Anderson. Look at all the candidates that seem to have been seriously considered:

Bobby Hurley
Porter Moser
Tim Cluess (we all took him seriously, even if the higher ups did not)
Ryan Odom
James Jones
Paul Hewitt

Mike Anderson is better than all of them - and I don't think its a close call.

He's gotten a power conference school deep into the Dance, he's recruited at a high level, he's won consistently at three places, including two power conference schools. His teams have an identity and a toughness that we've lacked. And he's a good man who will run the program the right way. His only drawback - no local NY ties - is less and less relevant as recruiting becomes more and more national even at St. John's.

I would have been happy with Hurley, Moser or Cluess - but Mike Anderson is a better choice than all three.
Try telling that to Monte (I kid because I love).;) :)
I know where to find you when the honeymoon period comes to an end. lol

Good interview. Thanks Paultz. The guy handles himself well.
I liked Iron Mike's comments regarding getting his guys to 'play together, play for each other, work hard, to establish a culture.'
I think you're right SeattleJohnny about the roster. He said a couple times, he'll have to 'wait and see' on who stays/leaves, but I have to think that LJ is the major potentially 'moving' piece.
I think he'll focuses first on getting our 'missing' slots filled: 2 PGs, maybe another PF, and look for athletes/shooters, keeping a likely replacement for Figgy front and center.
We shall see.

Frank 61, Adam, NC Johnnie
Do any of us - perhaps the more optimistic/glass half full types - have any doubt that this man Mike Anderson will:
1.compose a fine staff unlike we’ve had in decades;
2.complete a roster of returning and new players that will play hard, compete and maybe even be a pleasant surprise and
3.elininate the need for a major rebuild?

I really have no doubts about accomplishing all three

I am also buoyed by the presence of our AD Mike Cragg and the endorsement Coach Mike Krzyzewski gave to MA - I trust their judgments - the trilogy - the judgments and speech of Mike A, Mike C, and Mike K - they are not the types to merely “talk”
But rather
They “do”.
They get it done.
We are fortunate fans.

Mike Krzyzewski, Duke Men’s Basketball Head Coach and USA Basketball Senior National Team Head coach (2005-16):

“What a terrific hire for St. John’s! Mike Anderson is a winner. Period. I have always been impressed with Mike, going back to his days as an assistant coach under the legendary Nolan Richardson at Arkansas. He has a championship level pedigree and is an accomplished coach at the highest levels of our sport. He is going to love working with Mike Cragg as together they’ll build an elite culture and basketball program at St. John’s.”

Dick Vitale, ESPN College Basketball Analyst and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer:

“Mike has a wealth of experience. People are going to love his style of play - high energy, fast paced - so excited for St. John’s and NYC basketball.”

Jimmy Dykes, University of Arkansas graduate and former Razorbacks women’s basketball coach, SEC Network analyst:

“I’ve known Mike for over 25 years. As a man, as a husband, as a dad and as a coach, he’s outstanding in all of those areas. He will win and he will win by doing it the right way like he always has. He and his wife, Marcheita, will pour themselves into those players and the St. John’s campus. They are difference-making people and St. John’s has hired a tremendous leader for their tradition-rich men’s basketball program.”

Bill Raftery, former coach and TV personality on FOX Sports and CBS:

“He’s taken a whole lot of the juice and hard work and toughness of Nolan [Richardson] and that style and modified it when necessary to the talent that he has. His teams have played with the same energy he’s had throughout his coaching career and I’ve always been impressed with how he’s been able to accomplish so much at Arkansas in one of the really tough, deep and talented leagues that we have in the country.”

Joel Fisher, Executive Vice President, Madison Square Garden Marquee Events:

“The Madison Square Garden Company would like to welcome Mike Anderson as the 21st head coach of St. John’s University. Madison Square Garden has hosted St. John’s basketball for over 80 years and is excited for the Mike Anderson era to begin.”

You are correct I went a bit overboard. 1,000 apologies to CMA.
