Mike Anderson

This may surprise some of you, but I like the hire. I think it was the best case scenario after Hurley turned us down IMO. Don't get me wrong, Cluess is a successful coach, but his teams benefited from having awful teams to compete against. They simply outscored you. That doesn't work in the Big East as we saw against the likes of PC and others. I think Cluess would've gotten us to 18-20 wins a decent amount but not put us over the top. Anderson has proven himself at 2 major jobs at Mizzou and Arkansas. May not be the sexiest name, but the guy seems to have a clear track record of success. Now let's get Borman or Hsu or both if possible and we are off and running. I still hope Bobby and Oliva resign. Looks like Cragg won this battle as Anderson was recommended by his Duke buddies. That's a good sign.

He’s gonna be a good coach, at whatever level, one day

Why? How many kids on our current roster are local? As we've learned, not many kids are looking to stay home anymore.
Although it's true that most outstanding local kids go the prep route they start out here and are identified by 7th grade, if not sooner, plus they play on local AAU teams so having that contact matters. Of course we need to cast a nation-wide net but showing these local studs some love is important too.

The reason we don't have more local kids on the roster is because the one guy who did recruit was tunnel visioned into transfers and JCs. I'm sure that's going to change.
Not sure the NYC links are as important as they used to be. Recruiting is a national game now.

And for all the handwringing from the local coaches, they haven't done St. John's any favors – not for Mullin, Lavin, Roberts, Jarvis and down the line. Sure, some of that rests with our coaches, but it's a two-way street.

Anderson brings a track record of running well-coached teams. If he can do that and develop players, the pipeline will open up quickly enough.
Agree about the local coaches not doing us any favors, but maybe if we get somebody connected to the local AAU scene that could change.
Arbitello had some positive remarks in regard to Anderson. Wouldn't be so bad to get a CTK kid once in a while.
Yeah, I'm thinking of one in particular.:) ;)
Ha, I think he would fit in nicely!

For those concerned about Mike Anderson not having strong local recruiting ties, let things play out with his staff. There’s a strong sense that St. John’s was already planning on bringing in local recruiting help regardless of the hire. #sjubb

Two thoughts on Mike Anderson: 1. He knows how to win in a power conference. When you consider he's gone to 3 NCAA Tournaments in last 5 years in a rising SEC, that's telling. 2. His teams play a unique style + St. John's is going to have what it's been longing for - an identity.

Anderson is one of just 4 active Division I head coaches with 15+ years of experience and no losing seasons, along with Mark Few, Tom Izzo and Roy Williams. Impressive company. #sjubb
Based on what folks are saying, he is a high character person who doesn’t cheat. Fact that he has been very competitive in probabl6 th3 dirties5 conference in the country says something.
Current players love him. Would be good transition element. After a year or two, he can start to make his own mark elsewhere.
What’s the attraction to GSJ? He needs to go.

While he might not be ready to be a Head Coach now (or maybe ever), the players like him, he has a very good basketball mind, understands the game and teaches it well. Retaining him as an Assistant would not be a bad thing.
So the other two finally moved out of the way, and that allowed Cragg, person hired to direct the athletics department do his job. And guess what? He managed to salvage the situation and get a very solid candidate.

What an amazing concept.
Everyone know why the two idiots got out of the way.
The interview, followed by the people who contacted the school and demanded that they stop their bs.

You know if none of this happened that right now JJ would our coach and we'd be the same crap for the next 5 yrs as the last 20.
They were forced to give 100% of the decision making to Cragg, and boom, Mikey boy got us the best on that list.

Now we have a chance to make some noise, even 500 in conf is an improvement.

Oh, I didn’t realize that Earlington jumped ship also and surprised Keita still on board. Thanks Paultz.

Can't imagine coach Anderson won't reach out to him and give it a shot. His dad was quoted as saying he might have returned but for the coaching change. This coach will be a great fit for his talents.
I thought Simon is gone because he hired an agent and won’t be invited to the combine, but I could have this mixed up. Lol.

This is perfect coach for Williams

Good to see Heron, LJ and Williams there at the press conference and he not only recognized it but brought them up there with him. Hopefully a good sign.

Holy moly, what a week!

He already has them.
That was him showing everyone that these young is staying and going to war for me next year.
If they weren't then they wouldn't be supporting him at the presser.

Welcome back young men

Welcome to St. John’s Coach Anderson! Liked what he said, but far more impressed by how his teams have played in the past. It speaks volumes about our AD to reach out to the student-athletes here, ask them for input, seek info from his Duke contacts, and close on a very solid coach within a tight window after one of our most famous alum tears the University to shreds on the radio while kids are in the transfer portal. Well done indeed. I like Coach Anderson and if he retains the boys on the podium alone (and maybe an assistant or two in attendance) will give himself a major boost on the recruiting trail. Sometimes it all works out, here’s hoping it does for us this time too. Best of luck Coach!

Yes only kids on campus were Wright, Heron and Figueroa. Rest home. Ian Steere knows Anderson who recruited him out of high school btw.
