Mike Anderson - Recruiting, Coaching, Etc.

I not big on the * ratings but if I have the chance to  get. 4 or 5 I would take it everyday over a 2-3 .not saying the latter can not Improve to that level but I rather start with A 4-5  on the the box just my opinion which does mean much

Not that we are a school that routinely gets 5-star kids, but they are gone before they've really accomplished anything. If we can get to everyone being a 3.5/4, and land a local 5-star kid when it looks like that type kid really puts us over the top for a year before he splits, I'm happy.

We have to be realistic, though. When the Wades of the world are still allowed to be employed, it's tough for a non-football school like St. John's to make a dent. We need to fish in our realistic pond and coach them up.

I am so tired of the whining about 3*, 4* or 5* or lack thereof recruiting complaints. We are in a much better situation than the most of the last 20 years, so please...

With all due respect, that’s not saying much.  I’m cautiously optimistic.  Need Champagnie to come back and a solid guard piece to be set up for a nice year.  Regardless, year three for the current regime  is critical.

The way to compete and beat 4* and 5* freshman is with 3 star upperclassmen that grew together as a team. This ridiculous transfer rule created a free for all that is not doing this program any good. CMA has to incorporate 6 new players, and perhaps 7, into a system brand new to all of them. It seems to be no coincidence that CMA's teams start slow and get better as the season progresses. It takes time to play CMA's system well. It would be nice to have a core of 6 or 7 players returning each season. That now seems unlikely.

Just finished the book Miracles on the Hardwood that JSJ mentioned a few weeks back.  Interesting book. Not great but not bad.  Bounces around too much for my liking and seems to fly through the 80's to present more quickly than prior.  Not as much on SJU when compared to full chapters on Loyola, LaSalle, LMU, Marquette, Gtown, Gonzaga, Nova etc....  Regardless likely something that everyone here would pick up some interesting nuggets.

Anyway in the Nova chapter the two paragraphs below jumped out at me. Especially since there is always a clamoring for highest rated classes.  Some food for thought.

From February 2010 until the dissolution of the "Old Big East" in March 2013 Villanova would post a 58-52 record.  Included in that run would be a 13-19 season in 2011-12.  It was the darkest stretch of Wright's tenure, and it was more troubling than it would have been if this were a newly hired coach struggling through a rebuilding year or two.  In the case of a coach who was a decade into his run and who had put together a series of outstanding recruiting classes, it appeared that perhaps the program had lost its way.

Villanova assistant coach Billy Lange rejoined the staff in 2011 after 7 years at the Naval Academy, giving him a fresh perspective on what he saw.  Lange would later reflect on this period and tell Dana O'Neill that the 'highest rated recruiting class ever' seemed to be a part of the problem.  "Every coach in the Big East would have taken those players, he said.  "But they weren't coming to Villanova for the same reason Coach Wright wanted them to come."  Or as Wright himself would say: "We had some guys who were juniors and seniors and not happy about it.  They thought they'd be out early.:"

·       Web Release QUEENS, N.Y. (June 16, 2021) – Head Coach Mike Andersonannounced on Wednesday that Tyler Watson has joined his staff as the team’s strength and conditioning coach. “Tyler is going to bring experience, excitement and energy to our basketball program,” said Anderson. “He will build our young men up and challenge them both mentally and physically so they can reach their full potential as basketball players.” Watson comes to Queens after spending the last two seasons as the director of women’s basketball sports performance at Tennessee.

While in Knoxville, he constructed and implemented the strength, conditioning and nutrition programs for one of college basketball’s most storied programs, helping the Lady Vols turn in two-year record of 38-18 with an NCAA Tournament berth this past season.   “I am extremely grateful for Coach Anderson giving me this opportunity at St. John’s working with a basketball program with such rich tradition and history,” said Watson. “I am excited to implement a sports performance model that reflects our style of play, which is fast and physical

.” Prior to his time at Tennessee, Watson spent one season at Missouri State as an assistant strength and conditioning coach, overseeing activities for men’s and women’s basketball as well as men’s and women’s golf.  During his one year in Springfield, Watson helped the Lady Bears reach the Sweet 16 before heading to Knoxville with Head Coach Kellie Harper. From 2015-18, Watson served as the head strength and conditioning coach at Elon University, overseeing all 16 of the athletic department’s varsity teams while working directly with men’s basketball, women’s basketball, volleyball, women’s lacrosse and track & field.

Before taking over at Elon, Watson undertook stints as an assistant at both Tennessee State and Clemson. During his time at Tennessee State, Watson was involved in implementing the strength and conditioning program for both the men’s and women’s basketball programs. Watson, who holds a Level I sports performance certification from USA Weightlifting, also held internships with Southern Miss, Vanderbilt and the Buffalo Bills.   Watson, a native of Chattanooga, Tenn., graduated with a degree in exercise science from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 2014.

My sister was asking me for an idea of what to send me for my birthday. Miracles on Hardwood looks like a book I'd really enjoy so thanks to both you and JSJ for bringing it to my attention.

DeMeo would be the only one that makes sense to me

Sure hope it's not Macon!!!

I doubt it’s Macon after he just got bumped up to Associate Head Coach or whatever the title is. It must be DeMeo

Looks like it is DeMeo not returning, as per Jeff Goodman and Zach B. Always seemed like an odd fit here.
