The problem is pretty simple.

The St. John's roster lacks sufficient talent to win many Big East Conference games.

What StJohn's player, other than Champanie would start on a majority of other Big East teams ?  Answer: no one.

What StJohn's players, other than Champanie would get substantial minutes as a non starter on a majority of the top tier Big East teams ?  Answer: not many, if any.

I have literally been saying this for weeks and months you do understand that.

I even said take SJU's first 8 players and take Nova's first 8 players.  Forget about starting how many players in SJU's first 8 could crack Nova's top 8.  Maybe Julian, maybe.  Forget about starting.

I just don't understand why anyone thought this team was going to do much better than they are doing.  But my favorite of all time is "We have the most depth we have had in years..."  What?  No SJU has 12 scholarship players and that is nice but that does not mean depth in any way shape or form.

We are also lacking in the players we most need: competent big men and outside shooters. So while having a full roster is nice, it's far more important to have 8 or 9 players who fill specific needs. Balance and Big East level talent is  far more important then bodies.

When I attended St. John's in the early 1980s I was acquainted with a guy who was a proud Manlattan Jaspers fan.  He spoke about the glory days decades earlier of Manhatan College basketball and about how the Jaspers were then still relevant on the national scene.  I wondered how he could be so out of touch touch.

Now in the year 2021 I am beginning to believe that I am others on Redmen.com are sounding like the Manhattan fan did when he spoke about the national relevancy of the Jaspers in the 1980s.

Otis nice post. Many of us who were too young in the 80's remember the end of the fraschilla/Jarvis teams similarly. They were city kids w balls. Played hard. Didn't take any shit. Shame we needed another minute to make it to the final four

Does anyone really thing we are relevant in college hoops?  I think we all love the team but I dont think anyone thinks this team gets any national coverage or respect.

Unless SJU is willing to be associated with some shady perons or mortgage all their real estate and bribe a HOF coach to come here we have the best coach that our money can buy :).

With  the exception of a few COMPLETELY delusional fans, why would anyone think or expect that we are relevant nationally, and/or are deserving of any coverage or respect at the moment?

When I was a child when my mom made cakes, she let me lick the spoon for the last bits of chocolate batter.  So far our recruiting is like licking the spoon.

At this point in the Mullin and Lavin regimes the 3rd year rosters promised to be much better than where we are right now.    I could be wrong though since others here are much more focused on recruiting.

This will change of course with transfers, a senior sticking around, etc. From Johnnies Pride Twitter Acct.

To me it is critical to keep core three, Greg, Posh and Julian in place and improve post position  in order to be middle of pack team next year perhaps.

I said this many a time in the past as well although I added Vince as well.  And he is the key because for them to have any type of season this year he needed to be a big time player and it appears he is basically a role player.  The bottom line is the hope is to keep the core of 3-4 players and then add a few more to as you say break thru in year 3.  But they need more then what they have incoming to be quite honest.  And not just bodies but difference makers or they will struggle again in year 3.

At face value, it does not appear that next year's roster, based on contributions so far of roster players, will even have a ceiling of middle of the conference.   Some of you may know better, and I'd like you to weigh in.  But based on the projected roster at the moment, next season does not appear to be a breakout to put on the proper trajectory towards the top of the BE.

Certainly not a lock to be middle of pack and fully prepared for less.

I'd be surprised if there is not some roster churn with transfers coming in (and out).

Churn is sometimes good.

and sometimes bad, but either way it's inevitable and we are all hoping that it's for the good.
