Mike Anderson - Recruiting, Coaching, Etc.

Yes, the plan to beat us easily is clear. Force us into a halfcourt game and make open 3's. Some games the pressing style is so fun to watch, but other times it feels so gimmicky. And you hear the announcers debating if it's a way to sustainably win or not here.
Maybe time for Mike Anderson to run those Nolan Ryan drills where they don’t touch the ball at all and just run around the court with weights in their hands getting into proper position.
Richardson, and you're right.
Get tough on these kids.
Our 3 point defense is awful . Against any opponent . BE teams will kill us if we give up that many Open 3’s . Despite Cole and Earlington having very good Nights , we are going to need more kids who can shoot . CMA should scour the Country for a pure shooter . Even if the rest of the pieces aren’t sterling . BE teams are going to pack inside against us , daring us to shoot the 3 . Williams never really got untracked tonight . Probably due to his foul situation . He’s better than what he showed tonight .
I think a competent(not spectacular) low post player is our #1 priority.
Glad Cole had huge game but I'm still quite concerned about his ability to play against Big East teams. Crossing my fingers. The worst Big East team is much better than Rider.
Cole is not going to score 20+ points often in league play, but if he stays in rhythm and doesn't force things he should get enough open looks, to go along with some drives and put backs, to average 12-15PPG.

I just came across this article from back when CMA was first hired. It may have been posted back then. I think it presents an accurate assessment of his strengths and weaknesses at his prior stops. For better or worse, he is going to to recruit kids who fit his style, seemingly regardless of rankings or stars. I found it to be an interesting read, especially with the concerns about recruiting and half court offense which have been discussed a lot recently on the board.

Thanks for posting this Monte, totally forgot about reading this and is some of the same concerns that I have had since CMA has been here. Hopefully we can spring a stud or two in next year and make that big push forward

I didn't want to derail the "Around the Big East" thread, but I wanted to touch on what MCN stated about we're gonna have to "up our game" on the recruiting trail by garnering PTP'ers. If we can snag about two PTP'ers, then that'll help catapult our recruiting.

Am I fine with our recruiting? I'm on the fence. Am I concerned? I'm not overly concerned at the moment, but I would like to see a PTP'er landed at some point soon.

I'll see how things fare throughout the rest of this season and next season on the court and recruiting. Look at a team like Rutgers. They only have two four star players (top 100 Montez Mathis and top 50 Cliff Omoruyi).

I surmise we'll learn a lot in the next season and a half.

I’m of the same feeling here. I’m concerned for sure. How can we not be? Our recruiting class ranks last in big East for the 21’ class. If SJU fans aren’t concerned then there’s something wrong. One has to hope that either the staff has the best ability in the conference to recognize hidden talent or they’re the best at developing talent or both. Now in a league with such talented coaches and rosters, it’s hard to assume either one of those things.

Now, the talent for sure is getting better. We don’t need multiple 5-star hauls, but IMO it’s still underwhelming talent-wise when I look at our class from a scoring perspective. We aren’t bringing any very talented offensive players in except for Pinzon and we are going to need a lot more than that to compete with the rest of the league.

We also have to to consider SJU’s poor rep in the league too, which hasn’t helped us jump to the forefront for top recruits. We’ve had a lot of turmoil and bad coaches. The hire of an Uber-clean coach doesn’t help our cause as fans. We are definitely in this thing with a knife at a gunfight and that’s the path that was chosen. It’s multi-factorial.

Mike Anderson and the staff are going to have to figure out a way to overcome those obstacles which are significant, and it’s not easy when CMA isn’t known as a shark recruiter to begin with. We definitely need to have some patience but it’s very hard for sju fans. We have to hope a few swing our way because I don’t see us all of a sudden landing the top guys.

If I had a gripe it would be that we need more offensively talented kids. I think Pinzon is gonna be a big piece and is underrated like Champagnie. We need more though.

Best moniker for me to describe what we need and it’s true lol. I figured college basketball fans would get the reference.

Interesting that the highest rated recruit for Rutgers during Pikiell's tenure (Omoruyi) has transferred.  I believe he was a top 50 or so recruit, and he's at Oregon now.  (He played well in the game I saw them play - LJ's first game for the Ducks.)  Yet Rutgers doesnt seem to miss him - at least not yet.

That's a different player.  The highest rated player Pikiell has recruited is currently a frosh for Rutgers (Clifford Omoruyi; not Eugene who is now at Oregon).

Given that Oregon plays in Eugene this back and forth has great potential as Redmen.com's best ever "who's on first" dialogue.

No matter how you slice it,if we are going to move up in confr ,we need higher ranked players.unfortunately I am it sure the coach or staff are capable on landing this level talent  Coach deserves at lease this season and next,if he comes up short then let the neg talking begin
