Mike Anderson - Recruiting, Coaching, Etc.

This may be a little off topic but even though Iget on CMA a lot for recruiting, I do love how he disciplines players in game for mistakes and does not coddle them. How frustrating was it with Mullin as coach when Ponds, Clark, Ahmed etc would take a ridiculous shot and not be reprimanded or yanked. Or if anyone made a horrible decision they just kept playing. Was a mess. Its great to see that CMA teaches while coaching and wants the team to learn from its mistakes.

I think he will be more than a role player,he needs to adjust and be coached and he will shine.just feel we were all hungry for some recruit to come in an lead us to a title in BE

For the first time in forever, we have a rock solid FT shooting team and they are almost automatic most games. Given this rarity and our lack of shooters, we should be driving at teams all day long until they get in foul trouble. Some will go in for and-1's. If we get the best bigs out of games or scared to foul out, that will only open the flood gates for more drives. When you drive well, teams pack it in the paint and you suddenly have tons of wide open 3 pt shooters for kick outs. In football you run to set up the pass game. In hoops we need to drive to set up the 3 PT game. The BYU game, we didn't establish it and we lost. We came out shooting before challenging them a lot inside. We don't need to make every shot inside...as long as you force your way in, you will rack up FT's.

I expect Cole to start most of the season and score between 15-20 points. Playing a couple of games of less than his usual play is no reason to panic and abandon ship.

I’d be happy with 12 year one.

I agree Mike. Three point shooting is not our strong point. We just have to make enough to keep defenses honest. You do that by playing to our strength which is using our speed , quickness and athleticism by taking the ball to the hoop and either scoring or drawing fouls or both. This can also negate a teams bigs if we can get them into foul trouble. Teams will then pack it in to stop he drive which will lead to more wide open threes which will give us a better chance to hit them at a high enough percentage to keep the honest and therefore being able to be effective at both.

I look forward to defenses starting to cheat toward Champ and at some point a wide open Cole becomes the dagger that stops them from doing that.

SJU is shooting better than fifty per cent from two point range I believe for the few games so far this season. They are also shooting very well from the free throw line. They have to avoid games like BYU where they go four for twenty one from three and still stay reasonably close in the final score.
We are playing into the oppositions hand if we play like that in the big east. Three point shooting is not this teams strength.

I wonder how many players have averaged 20ppg here in their first season.

Walter Berry did not average 20 his first season at SJU. 15-20 points per game gives you first team big east.
Good luck with that. I would be very pleased with 11-14 in CMA's share the ball system.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Tony Jackson is the only one to average twenty points a game in his first year and that was his sophomore year because freshmen couldn’t play varsity ball back then..

Marcus Hatten did it.

Otherwise Walter could have scored 20 a game easily . Louie didn’t let Walter go off until the following year when he was National Player of the Year and Wooden Award winner .. Berry was something else for sure . Just wished he would have stayed 1 more year to play with Mark Jackson in their Senior year .

I don't think he's had many open looks the last few games. . Close to open looks, but defender just close enough to alter or rush his shot ever so slightly. Resulting in his shot "almost" going in. Agree that a JC kid doesn't same window of time to get acclimated to the next level as a freshman, but I'm still hopeful this Cole and the team make the adjustments needed to get Cole back in rhythm. I think he is capable of being a 12-15 PPG scorer, even against better comp.
Cole will be fine - it's a different level, different system, different role for him. He can shoot, and he can also score when he's put in the right position. It's just going to take some time for it all to come together.

I thought the Stony Brook game showed that Anderson has been working with Cole, Moore, and Toro - you could see that Moore was much more comfortable. Toro had some tough moments but also had some of his most productive minutes on the floor. Cole did not force anything, which is a step forward for him. It's just taking him longer because he may have the biggest adjustment to make. But I think he'll be just fine. Anderson knows his business.
Glad Cole had huge game but I'm still quite concerned about his ability to play against Big East teams. Crossing my fingers. The worst Big East team is much better than Rider.

Mike Anderson didn’t look happy in the interview. He’s right not to be...

I don't know about much better. We could be the worst BE team.

Maybe time for Mike Anderson to run those Nolan Ryan drills where they don’t touch the ball at all and just run around the court with weights in their hands getting into proper position.

The MAAC is awful to begin with. Then you take the worst of the MAAC. That's who we played today. Maybe it's a good thing I didn't get my wish and have us play Marist. We won 2 MAAC games by 4 pts combined. Marist would've shot 92% from 3 against us and gotten life after CMA pulled everyone, letting our ball boy start.

Our 3 point defense is awful . Against any opponent . BE teams will kill us if we give up that many Open 3’s . Despite Cole and Earlington having very good Nights , we are going to need more kids who can shoot . CMA should scour the Country for a pure shooter . Even if the rest of the pieces aren’t sterling . BE teams are going to pack inside against us , daring us to shoot the 3 . Williams never really got untracked tonight . Probably due to his foul situation . He’s better than what he showed tonight .
