Another issue is that tickets sold in bulk to secondary retailers (scalpers) are making prices to many game prohibitive to the average income family. It’s not uncommon to see tickets on the secondary market to several Garden games priced in the three to five hundred dollar range.
Isn't that kind of like "nobody goes there any more, it's too crowded"? 😉 In all seriousness, when I checked the secondary market a few weeks back, prices for my seats(section 118) were going for close to $300. When I checked a few days ago they were under $200. At some point the secondary market pricing has to reflect the demand for seats.

It seems like they were releasing tickets in waves (I checked tix a few days ago and only some in 200s were available on Ticketmaster then yesterday they released a bunch more including some 100s). I think by doing that they artificially inflated the price on secondary market. Not sure why

My 80 inch TV and honestly just old age have definitely changed how I approach games. But also SJU specifically has a predominantly non sports fan base. The city will catch on if we start winning but sadly our current students and grads mostly never dribbled a ball or cared for people who do. Maybe that will change moving forward but we can't bank on the past grads IMO
They shouldn’t be admitted to the School if they don’t care about Basketball. It’s a tradition that has existed for over 100 years .
I’m only half kidding .
While it’s a entirely different situation , you think kids who go to ND ignore going to football games ? No , in fact Student tickets are expensive and limited , yet the Student section is sold out .

Kids who go to Villanova ignore BB.? Or , Marquette , Creighton , Xavier , Butler , Providence , G’Town , Seton Hall?

Only DePaul is short on fan support from Students . Understandably .

I’m excluding UCOnn as they have both, heavy student and Alum fan base . Obnoxious though they are .

Too many of them show up .

I watch our games on TV and fans shown in the lower tiers aren’t a lot younger than me . Lots of 50,60,70 year olds .
And , the Students shown while animated , are just at both, ends of the Baskets. Standing .

CA wasn’t designed with Seats at either end of the Court , like most other College Gyms .

Getting Students to attend more games is a puzzle . Maybe the Business School and not , the Athletic Department should take that problem on as Case Study .

Some very good points made in this thread. I think the key that was hit on is that we need the casual fans to show up. Let's not forget that this program has been an afterthought for over two decades. As mentioned, the casual fans didn't show up in the 2011 season almost until the epic run was almost over. That season did have a bit of a slow start though.

Personally I'd love to be there. I live in Manhattan so 6:30 on a Monday is ideal. There's no way my 4 year old will sit through a game though so hopefully when he's just a little older we can get season tickets together.

The original Alumni Hall did have small end zone seating. From 1981 to the remodel, we never put students there. When Lou retired, that's where he sat with other admins. SJU always placed nice quiet people there who would sit quietly and politely cheer.

at a macro level, the economy is really tough right now. the country has been dealing with inflation for almost 2 years. the talk of a recession isn't going away. there's more debt build-up. people have less in their savings. and the wars in ukraine and middle-east, make everything around us very shaky.

unfortunately for us, that likely means people are being much more cautious with disposable income.

it's just bad timing.

as for the michigan game, man it's a monday. first day of the work week. you can't really bring kids to the game. and for many it's also WFH now on monday's. so trecking to city from queens or long island on a monday night sucks. i live in the city so it's great for me. but i'll trek to queens too any night of the week. but we're diehards...

anyway, i expect it to be a good crowd with great energy.

go johnnies!!
There are always reasons not to go to a game, always.

During the august and september of Jacob deGrom's two Cy Young seasons, I'd go often and with little fan interest, would buy tix for as little as $20 in delta section behind home plate. I did exactly that one year on 9-11 and the Mets honored First responders in a first class way. DeGrom pitched dazzling games in that and the other starts where he was as good as Seaver, Gooden or any other mlb pitcher before or since. Fans can be just plain dumb in New York.

Here we have an easily top 5 coach of all time, doing what he does best - teaching and improving a team- with a talented roster, in a world class (maybe world best) venue, against a historically great opponent (formidable even in a down year).

The word IS out, no question. Most of my outerwear is sju branded and I'm constantly engaged by strangers about this team. A worker in Costco Riverhead 60 miles from campus, stopped me and said "C'mon. What are they doing playing Stony Brook?" Like i said, sport fans are aware and reading.

If I was working in the city tues-thurs, monday i'd go into the office, maybe make a few brownie points, then head to msg for a great start time (the 9.pm starts are killers)

I ran into an old friend from my schoolyard bball days in a supermarket who i had not seen in 30 years. He remembered he'd almost always see me on tv since me alumni hall seats were a few rows above the sju bench. He's going on monday and we will meet up.

Our fans sadly are missing the train on a great run. For me i learn more in person, and the in game fan experience is 1000 times better than at home on tv. To boot in game supports the team and fuels a home court advantage.

Always readons to stay home but finally there are compelling reasons that are worth the price of tix.

Patience. Nearly 25 years of neglect has eroded the fanbase. Plus a Monday night this early in the season will keep numbers down. Casual fans probably don't even know the season has started.
I think people have seriously underestimated how much damage oh let’s say the last 30 years did to the Program. I worked on Wall Street for 35 years and worked with some SJU diehards and many from other schools. We went from being a “tough out” to being a laughingstock. I mean we don’t need to regurgitate the ugly details. It was embarrassing. Strip clubs, fired coaches, guys walking out before a season was over etc. These things damaged our reputation and they were real.

I knew a guy who went to Richmond and year after year as we slid further into the abyss we would discuss how a school like his could stay “competitive“ while SJU playing in NYC couldn’t find a handful of top talent. Our teams were undisciplined and a complete mess. Frustrating but the guy was right.

Let’s be honest it’s going to take time. It WILL happen with RP. A little more patience. A few more wins.

Welcome to the “Society of ‘Get Off My Lawn’” or SoGOML.

It is an organization of like minded old, tired, cranky individuals who have organically grown to long for the days of “being on line” meant physically standing in line somewhere.

Where breakups with the significant other had to be in person (the girls never seems to have a problem telling me to go screw myself in person).

And where a game wasn’t littered with people staring at their phones sending photos and getting likes from imaginary friends, instead of watching the game.

And don’t worry, having an actual lawn is not a prerequisite. Many of our members live in studio apartments.

As long as you have a love and nostalgia for “this generation has no idea the lengths and sacrifices we endured having to read a Hagstrom Map instead of being spoon fed driving directions.”

Tee-shirts available, but the smallest size is an “L” for strictly comfort reasons.

I also don’t get it. My daughter loves sports and in her two years at St. John’s, brought Student Season Tickets. None of her friends did and she always said it was tough to get any students to go. She transferred to Binghamton where she graduated and went to their games also.

I know the U‘s football program isn’t what it use to be but a friends oldest daughter attended their as an undergrad (she just graduated med school). She very rarely went to football or basketball games and would got tickets a few times for my oldest son who would fly down there for a weekend with a friend to catch a football game. She and her friends would go with them or meet them at the game but would not always stay to the end and would catch up with my son later. Those might have been the only games she actually went to And I don't get that either.

Amen

10K is not a disappointing number for a Monday night w tickets starting at 100 a pop in the 200 section. The Saturday MSG big East games will sell out. This isn’t a casual fan game. The same die hards that show up Wednesday at 830 vs butler on campus.

The casual fans show up Saturday at noon vs Nova.

Disappointing on crowd, but first inning of SJ hoops renaissance. Drawing NYC non rabid group on a Monday night is not easy, but success will help capture that group in time.

Sitting court side for the Dwight Hardy clutch drive game v highly ranked Pitt in packed house at MSG on a Saturday w many NYC passive fans was awesome. Many folks around me were in that category, but came out because that SJ group was making big noise and tourney bound down the stretch of season. It is all about winning

That was a “goose bumps” finish

And let’s not pretend that all of SJUs issues have been solved by hiring Pitino. I mean, it’s 11/11 and the tickets for the three UBS games aren’t even on sale yet. Do not be surprised when those end up sparsely attended.

When I buy concert tickets I go on Ticketmaster once and if I see what I want I buy them. I don‘t look twice. Whatever the school is doing by releasing sections here and there has to be losing them sales. Based on what I saw a month ago I thought the lower bowl was sold out a month ago and it wasn’t.

You can’t sell tickets that you don’t put on sale.

If I was still back on Long Island, I would not be missing one minute of this Pitino renaissance of our once proud program! In a few short months, he has coached this newly woven group of players into a respectable team that will improve game by game. Just watching the first game on TV (my first in 3 years) you can see he has instilled the fundamentals of winning basketball into these young men. We will have our ups and downs this year, but they will be a pleasure to watch from a far and I hope our Alums and fans will continue to pack the house and improve our attendance as the season goes on! Go Redmen

If you want to increase attendance, know your target audience. I think we need to make game days, an event day. At the current interest level, we need more than just basketball to attract fans, especially students. Maybe some musical entertainment or some other gimmick. Just one man’s opinion.

We’ve lost 20+ years of fan building.

What should’ve been an explosion of fandom when we opened the dorms and started attracting kids from all over the country, turned into a loss generation.

Getting students to the games is the only way. I’d rather spend the money in giving every student season tix, free rides to the garden, stipends to spend on food, free merch….

Make it nearly impossible for them not to come.

Is it possible ( probably likely) that schools ( & pros too) hold back some good seats for hopeful
last minute full season or part season packages ? As it gets closer to game date & they realize
not needed for packages, they release for individual game sales.
