MICHIGAN (@MSG), Mon., Nov. 13, 6:30p, FS-1

On a positive note. Our Jayvee team outplayed their Jayvee team during the last three minutes. ;)
Our Jayvee team outplayed our starters because Jenkins and Ledlum were on the bench and the offense actually tried to move the ball and get others involved. The best thing for this team right now would be for Jenkins to slightly sprain his ankle getting on the flight to Charleston so he can only play 15 minutes.

I believe this game will be good for us in the long run. These kids needed a bit of a wake up call. Michigan came to play for the National championship and we did not. They need to realize quick that SJU/NYC is always going to get our opponents BEST effort. Plus, I think Michigan is going to be a very good team this year.

Pitino will have them on point for the Charleston classic. I’d be shocked if we don’t end up playing for the title on Sunday.

Lace ‘em up a little tighter next time gentlemen and bring it. The city has your back!

Mark didn't get enough burn when Moses was a senior.
True that. I was complaining about that way back then. Some things don't change. But he did get some burn as opposed to the previous year when Louie barely let him off the bench!

Also you know who else we are missing- AJ Storr - look at his stat sheet. Wish Rick could have kept him, I know he wanted to. Its just odd to me why Storr would be willing to play for an inferior coach, Anderson, at the same school yet jets when Pitino comes. Only thing I can think of is that Wisconsin offered more money. Thoughts?

Just dropped 17 against #9 Tennessee and played 33 minutes.

Storr is better than anyone we have this year.

Small sample size only 2 games but he is averaging 16 points but shooting under 40% from the field and 22% from 3 with little rebounds and assists. If he had those stats here he would get reemed. 7-20 shooting to get those 17 points against tennessee. Shocked he took 20 shots.

MAJOR CAVEAT: I am not panicking. After hearing Michigan beat Marquette, even in a scrimmage, I was shocked SJU was favored in this game and did not expect them to win. Fully expected this to take time to gel and for the noobs to step up their game to Big East speed/caliber. And I think they will. Love CRP. Love. But.

With all the discussion about the shortcomings of certain players here- all valid- I think a little of this one falls on some very curious coaching decisions. Namely:
-Why was Conway in the game before Alleyne? Why was his unathletic a** in the game at all???
-Why, with our vaunted conditioning program, did no starter play more than 25 minutes and why did they look so gassed at times? -Why did Pitino go so deep into his bench so early (Those last two may be related).

I understand we have three games in four days coming up, but why did Pitino not treat this game with the sense of urgency that it deserved? If I have to choose between playing a rotation of 8 and the team being tired the second game of a back-to-back in Charleston, or playing Cruz effing Davis at the end of the first half while all our good work goes up in smoke, I'm taking the former. Pitino is nothing if not a master marketer. 15k in the house, a top 5 recruit in the house, the eyes of the college hoops world on your debut...and you're saving guys for Dayton???

Whatever, its a long season, yada yada yada. But coach had me talking to myself last night with some of his decisions.

I think we both mean the same thing.
They are a young team because they have spent very little
challenging game time together. Practically none.

Also when they play against a really strong team, they'll look weak,
even embarrassingly weak, in the fundamentals of basketball,
but it's all in the learning process, part of experience.,

Lots of pressure when you're up against someone clearly
superior and playing in MSG for the first time to boot., where expectations are high.

Coach has work to do, that's a given, but he's the guy
that will do it. He always has.

"Time heals everything," add talent and HOF Coaching
and you have a real winner.

In the meantime, be softer on and more encouraging to
these kids.
They're old enough to read what we write. Encouragement never hurts !
More times than not it's very productive.
Point taken Swish. I apologize to the kids for being so cranky after last night. As a Mets and Giants fans I've now spent the entire year watching teams there were supposed to be good turn out to be absolute dogsh*t but it was tolerable because new Ricky P was gonna make us some real basketball to watch and a terrific team to root for this year. Was juiced for this first big game then got C+vid and couldn't be there. Between the disappointing performance and C*vid crankiness and a year of very disturbing sports fandom, I took last night a little hard. I'm not writing the team off - I've been a fan since 1983 and I'm not even an alum. I've got sticking power! Hoping they pull it together quickly for North Texas which is not a pushover and the legit teams over the weekend.

Jenkins isn’t a PG. He has also dribbled the ball off his leg more than any player I’ve ever seen here through two games.

I could live with that if he didn’t kill the rest of the offense. He dominates the ball and he does absolutely nothing to get our two best shooters looks.
I've watched the same re: Jenkins as you. But what gives me hope is that this is Pitino's guy. My friend listened to the podcast yesterday in which our guys interviewed one of St. John's assistant coaches -- forget which -- who came with Pitino from Iona (i.e., not Van). He said he was surprised with how "loose" Jenkins was with the ball during the SB game, because they haven't seen that in practice, and didn't see it at Iona. So perhaps these are just a few subpar games. Perhaps it is a PG adjusting to a higher-level of competition consistently. Perhaps it is a kid trying to do too much on a bigger stage. Or a combination of those things. But the Pitino-relationship and factor is what gives me hope here.

Give me Dingle, Ledlum, Luis and Soriano. Wings are not our problem. Storr is one dimensional.
Ledlum isn’t even on the same planet as Storr as a basketball player.

You can make an argument for Luis and Soriano…Dingle if he’s actually used correctly. Storr is very good, plus he’s only a soph. But Jenkins wouldn’t get him the ball anyway so it doesn’t matter. We have Alleyne who is similar and the kid can’t buy an open look.

I’m a Mets and Giants fan too and I’m going through the same emotions as you.

The Giants haven’t blocked anyone for over a decade now even with a franchise left tackle, a great rookie center, using high picks on guards, and taking a RT in the top ten.

This feels way too similar even with the great Rick Pitino.

My dad and I both said going to the game last night felt like a Mets experience.

By “stat sheet” I assume you mean “points”, but yes I wish he stayed and he can score with the best of them.

The thing with Jenkins is he does the same thing every time. He does that really loose hesitation and then goes downhill immediately. He doesn’t let the set breathe or anything develop.

We have a kid in Alleyne that shot 40.8% on almost 5 attempts from three for an entire season in the ACC. He only got one great look all game and it was with the second unit late. We don’t have to reinvent the wheel here.

We have another kid in Dingle, who has pure mechanics and good shooting stats and he doesn’t get looks unless they come from Taylor. It’s almost like Jenkins is averse to getting him the ball.

We have a center that can post up and pass out, yet we didn’t see it once last night. Soriano and even Ledlum can completely seal a defender, catch a post pass, draw some help, and kick it to a set Dingle, Allen, or Conway all night.

At this point I can’t wait for Luis, because I know he can get into the lane with control and find set shooters on the perimeter.

Anyone who knows basketball is relieved when we run the weave because it gets the ball out of Jenkins’ hands for once.

Luis averaged 11 PPG at a mid major, and has yet to step foot on the court for us. Not sure how you can make an arguement for him for anything until we actually see how he performs at this level, and over a period of time.

Give me Reggie Carter and we win that game.😉
Reggie was s great player ! All American .

Would he alone have been able to clamp down on Mug of Mich? Don’t know and Reggie played a long time ago

I think Shamorie Ponds might have offset Mug . Shamorie could strip the ball a lot and was quick enough to maybe keep up.

As much as we liked Posh , it’s questionable whether he could have stayed with Mug either . Posh often was beaten off the dribble by bigger and faster guards . He’s forte was stealing the ball in the back court or coming from behind to get the takeaway .

At least ,Ponds would have made Mug work hard on the defensive side. Taking him to the basket or shooting from outside . But , we aren’t in fantasy BB mode .

I want to say this and maybe it’s old age but , I find myself agreeing more often than not with Dinkins and MJMaher a lot in their game analysis . And ,I ‘d like to think they find themselves reciprocating more on my posts as well . Bad blood is done from my side with both .

Before I get to the game , other than MJMaher catching the 8:32 to Huntington , I’m totally confused as to his eating routine last night .

Was it Keen’s Chop House first ? Or Tir Ana Nog ?
And ,post game it was a disappointing attempt to get Pizza at Rosa’s . Which then lead to a Street vendor for Philly Cheese steak with no cheese ? What’s the sequence here ?

But , not 1 Comment about IPA consumption ?

Mike , can you clear that up on food and drink ?

As for the Game , I don’t think anyone is giving up on this team but , everyone in St John’s nation from Fr Shanley on down got a wake up call last night . RP included . Martelli did a great job countering everything Rick tried . I actually think Phil is a better Coach than Howard but , that’s not germane .

I woke this AM and felt Mich was a 2 seed and we were a 15 seed . We stuck close for most of the first half but , the lineup at the end of 13 minutes was puzzling and caused us to go down 10 .

Optimism reigned for the 2 nd half and we had a chance to cut into their lead but , didn’t take advantage of their 2 minute drought as we were equally ice cold .

After that , the game got out of hand and we didn’t seriously challenge .

Clearly , they were lighting quicker than we are and they exploited that to perfection . They routinely blew past us and scored .

Dinkins questioned why RP didn’t go to Zone to counter and I wondered the same thing . Our man to man wasn’t all due to bad defense , they were just faster and better than we are .

I also thought they were more talented at every position , except for Soriano . I think Gus said Burnette was a 5 star but, had drifted to Texas Tech , Alabama before Mich .

Mug had to be highly recruited as well and his speed was too much for us .

Tshetter burned us from outside and is a tough
Player .

A lot of comment was made trying to justify our lineup being unfamiliar with each other as they all came from different schools . The point was made that could apply to Mich as well .

In the days of the Portal and NIL, it’s going to be rare for teams to play 4-5 guys who are together for more than a year or 2. That’s reality .

Lastly , who ever RP had scouting Mich in their first 2 games should be taken to the woodshed today , Rick claimed he was surprised about Mug’s speed and Burnette’s shooting . He also was unprepared for Tshetter taking Soriano away from the basket and then draining some long range bombs . Scouting needs to be tightened. up too .
