MICHIGAN (@MSG), Mon., Nov. 13, 6:30p, FS-1

One last comment (maybe :ROFLMAO:), the only things about last night potentially long term to me was the IMO less than 100% commitment to defense and the lack of toughness/fight when things started going south. Long season and I am in no way writing the team off or drawing any conclusions based on last night.

It’s not a young team it starts 3 or 4 5th year players. It’s a team that hasn’t played together long. I understand the lack of gelling. I don’t so much understand the lack of BB IQ, defensive intensity or BB fundamentals.
I think we both mean the same thing.
They are a young team because they have spent very little
challenging game time together. Practically none.

Also when they play against a really strong team, they'll look weak,
even embarrassingly weak, in the fundamentals of basketball,
but it's all in the learning process, part of experience.,

Lots of pressure when you're up against someone clearly
superior and playing in MSG for the first time to boot., where expectations are high.

Coach has work to do, that's a given, but he's the guy

that will do it. He always has.

"Time heals everything," add talent and HOF Coaching
and you have a real winner.

In the meantime, be softer on and more encouraging to
these kids.
They're old enough to read what we write. Encouragement never hurts !
More times than not it's very productive.

Relax fellow Redmen fans. We got beat by a very big & good team in Michigan. With two of their guys having the game of their lives.

Now if we look like this against Xavier in about a month I might start to worry. This “team” has still yet to become a TEAM. The addition of Luis will help as well. He was the best player in scrimmages until he got hurt.

So let’s give this team at least a month(lol) to gel before jumping ship.

"Give them credit" made me twitch a few times from past memories! But, this is going to be a work-in-progress and I truly believe that we are in excellent hands. I know we have heard "we need to be patient" way too many times in the past, but we really do need to be patient this season.

I was surprised how good Michigan looked. They are legit. It was simply just too early to play a team like this. Our guys still have a lot of work to put in before we get there.

I hate to say this but we could have used Posh in this game. With all due respect to Jenkins he doesn't match up to Posh defensively. This is one player that Pitino will regret letting go

I was at the game. First few minutes were electric. I hope this continues for every MSG game. We will be fine once Luis returns. The defense will tighten up and shots will go down for us. Ledlum is a bull in a china shop right now, but is going to find his role within this team. You can see his talent. We are going to struggle against big teams all season.

I hate to be pessimistic, but I don't see us taking this one at this point in our season. If this was end of November and more games under our belt, way more likely. We are jumping from Stony Brook to Michigan. Carnesecca to MSG with such a new team. I think we start slow and pick it up later. Final Score: 85-77 Michigan. Also some silly turnovers last night that cannot happen against a legit team.

My prediction on the loss was correct, I was just kind of surprised by how much how much we got blown out by. Joel is the only reliable option right now and came to play last night. I think we are burning out with the full court press for extended period of time. First half, kept us in it and then we faded in second half. Jenkins faded in second half too but has promise. This team overall needs to be better conditioned. That Michigan team was not that good except a couple decent players. So much sloppy play on our end that was not forced.

With that being said, I want to see Dunlap get the ball more to fire some shots, he has promise. He just needs to hit the weight room and he will be a main player for us one day in a year or 2 if he bulks up. That "JJ Redick" effect one day hopefully. If this game is played at end of November its better game. Bad scheduling on SJU part to have Michigan so early. A team with so many pieces and new coach can't just jump from Stony Brook to Michigan.

This game was part of Gavitt Games between Big East and Big 10. Event was scheduled by the conferences. SJU did not schedule it. The games are on a rotating basis of who’s included by each conference office.

Latest From Zach B. / N.Y. Post:

Ok, let's dig into last night's ugly loss to Michigan.

- Of all the issues from last night, from the one-on-one play on offense which Rick Pitino roundly criticized, to the defense, my biggest concern was the glass jaw. There was no response after Michigan's big run to end the first half. It went from 37-35 to 48-38 at halftime and St. John's never recovered. Poise was just not there for a veteran team. You saw it in bad shots, you saw it in missed assignments on defense. The response just never came.

There are a lot of overreactions after one bad performance against a team that is much better than projected. Michigan crushed two quality mid-majors before this. The Wolverines look like a top-four team in the Big Ten. Deep breaths, people. It's going to get better.

- I felt St. John's would've been better served with another buy game before this. I thought this when I saw the schedule come out. For a brand new team, this was an early jump into the deep end of the pool. A source told me before the game: "We're not ready for this kind of game. We will be in a few weeks." The source was right.

Pitino said what we all know after: The frontcourt depth is a big problem. Now, most teams St. John's will face will not have a front line like Michigan's. I expect to see a lot of Glenn Taylor Jr./RJ Luis at the 3/4 when Luis gets healthy. They clearly need another shot creator and Luis is that. It's not a coincidence that St. John's has struggled in the two games Ledlum has not played well and has looked good when he has performed well. He just may be a x-factor.

Everyone is going to need to have some patience. Pitino has said it's going to take time. I expect them to play much better in Charleston. One thing I want to see is this group respond to a run in a much more poised manner. That was my takeaway from last night. It felt like a bunch of guys who really didn't know where to go for a basket and forced a ton at both ends of the floor.

Watching the Stony Brook game I was so impressed with Jenkins ability to control tempo, dish, and shoot. Also with Dingles’ ability to slice through bodies to score layups. Interior Defense and intensity was poor there, and again last night. When we fell behind last night, I didn’t feel strongly that any one player could take charge and bring up level of play. Of course skill level of Michigan much better than Stony Brook.Yes, we executed poorly, a function of not knowing each other perhaps. But the lack of intensity, lack of defense, lack of rebounding, which is effort driven, is what really bothered me last night!

Gavitt Games we had nothing to do with the timing of when to play Michigan.

I guess you didn’t watch the many games where Posh lost the ball of his leg etc. without a defender within 10 feet of him. If you want to argue Posh’s superior defensive presence that’s one thing but to an argue he has a better handle is just silly.
Jenkins isn’t a PG. He has also dribbled the ball off his leg more than any player I’ve ever seen here through two games.

I could live with that if he didn’t kill the rest of the offense. He dominates the ball and he does absolutely nothing to get our two best shooters looks.

Of the 10 transfers, only 3 came from high majors and only 1 played a lot of minutes at that level. The transfers that will be relied on the most all come from mid majors. It is a concern many of us didn't want to really think about. I think all can contribute at this level, but it make take time to adjust. Some can handle the rise in class, but it helps when you don't have to carry a heavy load. Jenkins, Dingle and Ledlum all have to. Just something to think about.
This is exactly what I was thinking about during the entire second half of the game. Iona and Harvard are not the Big East. Pitino obviously thinks he can coach the mid-major players up. We’ll soon find out.

This team will improve. Pitino will go to more zone as the guys pickup the principles better in January. That will let Soriano stay home in the middle more instead of being caught out at the top of the key hedging.

They will learn one way or another that the best two shots are anything from Dingle and a set shot from Alleyne.

Jenkins and Ledlum will learn that they are secondary players that need to be patient and pick their spots instead of primary scorers or facilitators.

Dingle will get more time to handle the ball and he and Soriano will do well in pick and roll.

Taylor and Luis together will give us a chance to get more offense and still be fairly big at the 3-4.

I don’t think this team has the talent to be a good pressing team even with Pitino and even with 3 months of experience.

We’re seeing it early but Ledlum looks like he’s the barometer for the team. How he goes we go. Pitino/Masiello were REALLY on him when he came out. I was across from the bench and he got an earful a few times.
that occurred also in the Rutgers scrimmage and Stony Brook game. As CRP has said, he is coaching them on the fly.

“We did a good job of putting this team together … but our frontcourt depth is terrible,”

Interesting, because I thought Quinn Slazinski, a PF, was one of his first recruits and then he let him go.

Michigan was so well-balanced that, even if we went small to try to use our speed, they had enough athletes (combined with their size) to stay with us.

Time to forget this and get a win against North Texas in Charleston.
