MICHIGAN (@MSG), Mon., Nov. 13, 6:30p, FS-1

My guess would have been pick em at MSG. Looking at schedule, tomorrow night is probably the only game I won't be able to watch this year. Have to leave for a meeting I can't miss around 7:10 and won't be home until shortly after 8:30. Hoping for OT so I can see the end!
Well, don't the odds makers just try to even out the money on either side of the bet?

Beast - no way is that fans base the one that will consistently cheer on a bunch of college athletes. Not gonna pack 20K into the MSG with that. It's not gonna work or get even a decent fraction of 20K.

If that's the target, I think its misguided and university would not be looking at this correctly and is gonna struggle even more.

We can't be Neiman Marcus or Nordstrom & Rao's.. we need to be Target, Dick's Sporting Goods & favorite neighborhood food joint.

If we're gonna claim and live up to being NY's team, then you have to cater to and build a base that represents NY... and also the university... Make it something both the blue collar & white collar types should want to enjoy at reasonable prices that can be a night out with buddies, a date or with the spouse & kids and rally around the program and talk about it at work, school etc .
We have some very low priced season plans that don't even require a donation, correct?

You can't hire a $3.5 million coach, pay players approaching $3 million and then fill an arena with budget priced tickets.

At the end of the day we hired a coach to get the best results we've had in 40 years, compete at the top of conference and fill an arena with appropriately priced tickets. This isn't a charitable endeavor. It's not like you guve away a $5 ticket to someone who already watches us on tv and they will come back and pay $75. When someone pays $10 they think that's what the product is worth.

Just my 2 cents. I'm pretty sure if you swapped our program for xaviers, coaches players everything, they would still sell out and our fans would say, "ya but look at who their coach is and how much they spent on players".

Just a mostly moribund fan base here. First they will say prove winning to me, next prove sustained winning, then "they just raised prices. It's too expensive".

It will be a solid crowd. It’s the Monday factor 100%. Would have been no issue if it was a weekend.

I have niether the time nor the patience to go back and read all the posts complaining about tomorrow's attendance numbers(so far), but it would seem to be that the 2 biggest indicators of renewed interest by SJU fans is the spike in season ticket sales, and the opening night sell out. Guessing the large majority of season ticket holders will be at MSG tomorrow. That's all you can really ask for. The casual fan has not yet jumped on the SJU bandwagon, which will definitely keep attendance down. And without the casual fan, and without a big Mich contingent, I wouldn't expect big numbers.

Even during our heyday we relied heavily on the casual fan and the opposing team fans to pack MSG, not sure why anyone thinks it would be different now. Especially so early on in the Pitino era.

Only winning will get the casual fan to the game. And, in time, I am confident this will happen.

Bottom line....if you're on this site, and live within one hour of MSG, you need to buy a ticket.

I'll be in Sec. 105
Not aimed personally at you, you are just the latest, but this site has gone completely off the rails with this nonsense. People have no obligation to donate for NILs or go to games or do anything else because they happen to be SJU fans and I may be a minority of one but I couldn’t care less. To all, live your life and spend your time and money the way you see fit, and respect the right for others to do the same.

Absolutely monte. The fans for life will be going to this game if they are physically able to go. The others will follow along soon after this one.

Easy for me to say from NC, but if I still lived in either Flushing or Bridgewater, NJ I'd be there tomorrow night. Having said that, in order to pack MSG, need the casual college basketball fans plus student body, old diehards can't do it alone. Winning will be the elixir imho.

Old diehards have 2 things: time and money. Which is why we see so many at the games. Student body never much of a factor, and not sure it ever will be. Just win and we'll draw casual fans to support us at MSG. We'll be fine with just our fan base at CA. Expecting this to happen overnight is unrealistic.

Monte, from what I have seen over the years every college hoops team that draws very well at home has significant student interest, be it Duke, Kansas, UCONN, Nova or whoever. If SJU can't get that, it will limit its ceiling for sure.

Opener was only a sellout because 1000 students got in for free, far more of a factor then when the entire arena were paying fans. It was a figurstive sellout. Lots of empty seats from season ticket holders absent, and unsold tix went to 1000 students, 20% of capacity but probably aboy 1/3 or more of those actually there. Not debatable so i tbought you'd like the actual numbers. I think the actual single game tix sold was rather low because it was the difference between season tix, and the 1000 students who went for free.

That's the dangerous sign. Add 14000 seats at msg and consider there were few tickets sold to start the pitino era, and we may be left with Michigan alums msking attendance decent - the same problem we have vs. Uconn, nova, even georgetown at MSG.

Our of curiosity, were students ever a major factor in attendance at SJU games? Asking because I don't know. And if so, when was the last time?

Here's my hope and expectation NCJ: once we start winning, the attendence levels of the 80s and 90s will be our floor. I fully expect that between the Pitino factor, and with the hope that our school and marketing dept has moved in to the 21st century, we'll be able to make SJU basketball a really hot ticket in NYC and exceed those attendance levels. But first and foremost we need to put a winner on the court. Do that, and everything else will follow suit.

Beast, respect all your posts etc, but I think you have to wait a couple more games at the garden to take this battle up with more weight. I think you will not have to worry about it.

Won't debate the numbers with you, but I cannot recall another opening night with that amount of fans in attendance, and with that level of excitement. In any event, it's way too early to call any attendance level "dangerous". Like I've said in my prior posts, put a winning product on the court and the attendance will take care of itself. I'll remind you that I told you this in a few months when Rick has the team on a role and the Garden rockin'!
