Mets

A couple of things are pretty clear to me. Ruben was in the neighborhood of second base and Utley should have been called out in the first place. To say that the throw from Murphy was off line and therefore the neighborhood play is off is total BS. 2nd, Utley dipped his shoulder toward 2nd base but then veered directly at Tejada with a late and hard slide that was no where near 2nd base. Again Utley should have been called out as well. The explanations are crap from MLB. Why have replay when clearly they don't know what they are looking at. This whole thing was mishandled!! And if they find that Utley's slide was in fact illegal...big deal....its over and done. Total BS...

The neighborhood rule was designed so middle infielders did not get hurt turning a double play. Tejada quickly got the hell away from the bag and Utley hunted him down with a dirty high slide. That's reason enough not only to call both batter and Utley out even if he got to the bag and even if Tejada dropped the ball, but to suspend him for the rest of the playoffs.

I hope Utley nails down a sponsorship from Target. Because he will be one. If not on the field, then from fans. It would be fun to see him harassed in NYC restaurants, or get bumped into on the street. Of course, then fans wouldn't be trying to hurt him, just playing the game.

Doesn't Harvey get a warning ? So if not then bean him in the 7th or 8th

and it will be no loss if TC gets thrown out too

Agreed. Hopefully the Mets are up 5-0 in the 7th and Harvey should let loose and nail someone. Utley is a dirty player and has always been one.

You wonder if the Dodgers will try to be proactive and throw at the Mets first. If the Dodgers throw at the Mets first and they warn both benches it basically ties Harvey's hands.

As Wright said last night,"He's hurt players before."

Not as pissed off this morning despite still being confused how we got so god damn screwed by the umps. As far as utley is concerned... Have any of us ever liked that piece of shit? Utley Rollins and victorino will forever go down as garbage people and players in my book.

Harvey needs to go out there and retaliate against their young shortstop. Dont waste Harvey's energy on that old piece of garbage. Plunk the innocent kid and let's ruffle their feathers now. See now angry that gets them when the kid is hit and they're whiffing at Harvey's chedda all night.

Really it should be Utley who gets hit but I'll settle for their best player, Gonzalez.

Back in the days of Jackie Robinson the retaliation standard, other than HBP, was a bunt down the first base line with a knee appropriately and legally administered to some part of the opposing pitcher's anatomy.

I am still pissed. Time hasn't changed that one bit. I want Harvey to throw a no hitter, but miss a perfect game because he drills that little piece of horsesheit, Utley squarely in his ugly face. And if Utley isn't playing, then take out his boyfriend Rollins.

LA will have no answer for the sheit storm waiting for them Monday in New York.

F*uck LA. Let's go Mets. Take this in 4. Do this!!!!!

If the Mets needed motivation Utley certainly opened the door. You are right about the fans, can't wait to see their energy on Monday. You are going down Utley and you know it. Better hope they don't need a pinch hitter.

Couple things.
Tejada was pivoting to try to turn double play. Therefore NEIGHBORHOOD PLAY WAS in effect! Laughable trying to say it wasn't. If Tejada was stretching for force play like he was a first baseman than I can understand taking it off. But he was clearly not doing that. And if they are saying it was not an effort to make the double play, that makes Utley flying tackle that much worse. Should have been ruled out and automatic DP. neighborhood play was invented to prevent what happened last night. What makes that dirty play even more dirty is that you don't see those dirty slides anymore. When I first learned how to play I was taught to come across the bag side armed to lowbridge runners to prevent them from coming in late. Kids aren't taught that anymore because generally there aren't too many Utley like $cumbags around.

DIRT SLIDE AND TERRIBLE REVERSAL!!!!!

Utley suspended 2 games. So basically they take him from the abuse he was going to get from us at home. Ughhh

If the game is not in doubt Harvey still needs to rail someone in his last inning of pitching

8:30 start time is official now

Oh man it's going to be a long night. Wont be getting home till at least 1am

By suspending Utley, MLB basically admits that umps got it wrong and that interference cannot be video reviewed. Tainted win.

As our pastor said at Mass today, pray for divine intervention for the Mets.

so do the mets lead the series one win to one tainted win?

. We all love sports but let's face it, the guys running all professional leagues are idiots. They make money hand over fist in spite of themselves and that is all they care about. Which I guess in a way makes us bigger idiots. That ruling on the field was a joke, Torre's "interview" (really just a PR release) a bigger joke and Utley's suspension a confirmation of the inanity of it all. I wish Utley would appeal, pull a Brady and go to court because there is no way you can suspend him now after rewarding him and the Dodgers Saturday. Embarrass MLB but good.

I don't think MLB did enough in terms of the length of suspension, but in suspending Utley, they are acknowledging that the umps blew the call on the field. Even though the guys in the video booth I guess had the singular directive to determine whether Tejada was on the bag or not, it's crazy that not a single umpire could see that Utley made a late hit on Tejada and did not go for the base.

In slow motion:

1) Utley changes direction in his last 2 strides as Tejada had faded behind the bag to make the throw to first to make sure he wipes him out.
2) Utley is still not on the ground as he is passes the bag.
3) He puts his left hand up as he makes contact to try to disrupt the throw or flip Tejada, which he did.

I think the Mets should have protested, not on the judgment call, but the lack of application of the neighborhood rule, and the awarding of Utley the base because they had called him out. If the Dodgers win the series, MLB has a black eye for handing the Dodgers a win.

Two games in NY. Let the Mets take care of business and win 2 games so the stench of bad umpiring can go away. Between this horrible call and the bad umpiring behind the plate, this crew should not work again in the post season. Hernandez was railing about how inept MLB umpiring has been all season. He's right.

By the way, Mattingly is a dumb shill, questioning whether NY fans would be cheering one of their players had the Mets done this. Nice job, Donnie baseball, after adoring New York fans treated him with class and exultation even after his bad back reduced him to merely an average player. I know he has to protect his players, but to call out New York fans is just stupid. Dodger fans would agree with calling him stupid, something they've done for 2 years now.

I agree wholeheartedly about the umpiring being poor and getting poorer. However, and just for conversation purposes because I know replay is going nowhere, I think replay has a lot to do with that. Making split second decisions on moving targets is hard enough and it is just human nature to be affected by the fact that someone(thing) is always looking over your shoulder. Half the discussion in the TV booth now is where PitchTrack showed a pitch to be and replay has made a very difficult job that much harder. Add in the fact that you can look at SOME situations and not others, the Utley interference being a perfect case; any buffoon could see and know that his intent was to upend Tejeda, that he slid after the base, that it was clearly interference, that he AND the batter should have been out BY RULE. Obviously, MLB in another embarrassing PR move, designed IMO to do nothing more than keep Utley out of NY, confirmed just how utterly ridiculous the ruling was Saturday night. I am sure Torre OK'd the suspension with Donnie Baseball before he issued it. In addition, replay slows the games down and even with replay they STILL don't get it right. Hate it, hate it, hate it.

Agree 1000%. I'd prefer to take replay out of it altogether but hire more competent umps. Players make mistakes, managers make mistakes. Umpires make mistakes. It's part of the game. Now even with video review they get the call wrong that can affect the entire season for the Mets and Dodgers

I remember Andy Van Slyke being on Costas' HBO show years back, talking about 85 Cards/Royals and the famous bad call at first base. Slyke was asked if he wish there was replay then, and he more or less said: "No. It's just part of the game, and part of the lore, part of the legacy of what makes baseball baseball."

Replay is ridiculous. At this point, I'm not sure if replay has corrected as many bad calls as it has been the root of bad officiating.

If I'm the Mets I just take care of business tonight and win the game. Tomorrow I drill Kershaw his first time up. That will send a loud and clear message to the Dodgers.
