Mets

(g) If, in the judgment of the umpire, a batter-runner willfully and deliberately interferes with a batted ball or a fielder in the act of fielding a batted ball, with the obvious intent to break up a double play, the ball is dead; the umpire shall call the batter-runner out for interference and shall also call out the runner who had advanced closest to the home plate regardless where the double play might have been possible. In no event shall bases be run because of such interference.

The crazy thing about that call is that Utley was clearly not aiming for the base, just Tejada. This is why Utley never came close to touching the base because he was trying to take out Tejada. Breaking up a double play is baseball, but this looked like the umps got it wrong. Not only was Utley called safe in a game changing play, but also ended the season for Tejada. Not quite Pete Rose crushing Ray Fosse, but perhaps Rose barreling over Bud Harrelson.

If there is 1 pitcher I want going after a debacle like this it's Harvey #sendafucking100mphmessage

Baseball completely changed the play at the plate because Buster Posey got hurt. Here they don't enforce a rule already on the books and Tejada gets hurt. Then further they REWARD the Dodgers for the illegal play which completely and directly affects the outcome of the game. And I wonder why most of my "old school" buddies have drifted away from sports.

Sheffield's analysis is off. Pedro is right. The slide was late, it was high, and since he was not aiming for the base, it was clearly intended to interfere with the fielder.

Love Pedro accusing the video call to just cover for the ump, and that umps protect each other. Some anonymous guy in New York in an office overturns an ump making an out call when the runner didn't touch the bag because he was aiming for the fielder?

This is crazy. Before you know it, you will be able to video review balls and strikes.

I always thought that umps allowed infielders to be in the general vicinity of second base without touching the bag

In baseball trying to break someone's leg on purpose is fine
but you better not celebrate after a home run

I really hope that before this series is over Utley's season is ended with a similar hard-nosed accident.

F-ing Utley torso is still high even as he passed the base.

I also believe Roger Clemens would even the score up in the next game. I doubt the Mets will respond in kind.

Harvey will settle things and the crowd will go nuts.

I was at the game in 73 when Rose took out Harrelson. When Rose went out to left field (where I was sitting) the next inning, the fans showered him with whatever could be thrown from the stands - bottles, whatever. A vendor who was near us actually threw his entire box of peanuts or ice cream and hurled it onto the field trying to hit Rose. If you recall, play was stopped, and a trio of Mets, led by Willie Mays went out to left field to appeal to fans to stop so the game could continue.

Would be poetic if Flores could end up the hero of this series as a result of this dirty play.

before my time since I was 3. I won't throw beer because that would be a waste of a good kona beer.

I'll definitely be yelling though and cheering like hell when Harvey hits him

Well, Matt Harvey is pretty well fucked now. If he beans Utley, he probably gets tossed early and he’ll be lambasted for putting his team in a bad spot. If he doesn’t bean Utley, he’ll be declared a bad teammate.

This is beyond stupid. Joe Torre is a effing puppet

He's declared safe because no one tagged him. WHY WOULD ANYONE FUCKNG TAG HIM? HE WAS CALLED OUT. This is infuriating.

Was thinking the same thing. It's a no-win spot for Harvey. As much as Utley deserves one in the ear, need a good start out of Harvey. If the series was 2-0, I'd take the shot at Utley. Tied 1-1, got to keep Harvey in the game.

Watching Torre (Chief baseball officer) and the umpire supervisor trying to explain the call when Torre wasn't sure of the rule, it is clear neither believed the right call was made. Torre saying that had Utley been tagged after the umpire called him out was ridiculous. Utley left the field without touching the base because he was called out. Tejada didn't tag him because Utley was called out.

Hernandez just said the umpiring was horrendous all year. SNY announcers saying that if this was Tulowitzki who was injured the call would have been different even on review.

Hernandez just referred to 73, and said Met players went after Rose immediately on the field and he was surprised the Mets didn't do the same tonight.
