Mets

Small sample size, anyone?

Fair comment and I started my original post with same. I am a Murphy man, I love gamers, and frankly, a Harvey "hater", a legend in his own mind before he did anything. Still not over him having the audacity to insist on the 9th inning but way more, the asinine stupidity of Collins sending him out there. Elimination games of the WS is not the time to go where you have never gone before.

Up 6-0 today with no home runs.!Long season ahead. Glad I found someone who dislikes Harvey as much as me. Loved Murphy also. Duda gets a bad rap. No fan of Collins ever.

Don't see Duda at all, lead off approach in a power hitter's body; no mental toughness for my money, the anti-Murphy if you will. Agree about the long season but the Nats are not going to fold up like last year; additions of Baker and Murphy change their clubhouse significantly IMO.

FWIW, and coincidentally, in DC and watching Nats/Phillies and in-between 4th and 5th innings a sideline report on the difference Murphy has made in the Nats clubhouse with snippets from Zimmerman, Espinoza, and Harper talking about the professionalism he has brought. Harper, whose ego almost matches Harvey's, was the most exuberant in his praise. It is very early but as Yogi said (paraphrasing) sometimes it "gets late early".

Was a Murphy fan and miss him. Duda drives me nuts sometimes. Also was at the yankee game today and realized the mets seriously need to upgrade the quality of the bread with the cheesesteaks. Carl's bread blows ours away.

If you are going to have a winning team you need winning bread ( that's still on topic because it has to do with the mets and their food culture )

Duda was in the top 10 in the National League in both 2014 and 2015 in HR/At Bat. I wouldn't call that a leadoff hitter mentality. Mets won today and Nationals lost. Lets see where both teams are on June 1st and go from there.

An absolutely meaningless stat because he provides absolutely no consistency at all. Everyone knows the season has just started and we will see what it brings but that doesn't change the fact that I think letting Murphy go was a big mistake. You could argue stats with me with Duda all day and it won't change my mind; having very occasional amazing hot streaks amid weeks of easy outs is not my idea of a major league hitter.

Very few players stay hot all season including Daniel Murphy. Last season he hit .198 in April, .330 in May,.389 in four games in June before he got injured and missed 22 games. He then batted .245 in July, .311 in August and .298 in September before batting .111 the last four games of the season. He then hit his amazing .420 in the NL playoffs and finished off with .170 in the World Series. He is not close to Duda in any meaningful batting category besides average. Is not close in WAR the last two seasons and is even a worse fielder than Duda.

Don't think Murphy is going to stay this hot all season. There is nothing in his career that gives any evidence of it,

Sorry, not a stat guy, I watch players play, I just cannot begin to compare Murphy and Duda as hitters. What stat guys don't get IMO is that when in sports is much more important than how many. Stats are cold and sterile and while they certainly tell you something they are only a starting point to go see if someone can really play when the money's on the table. See Wilt vs. Russell; Jordan vs.James - stats would tell you those are valid comparisons but in reality not even close. Again, IMO, Murphy is a gamer, Duda a dog.

VERY early but how has keeping Harvey and letting Murphy go worked out so far?

Neil Walker has been a fine replacement: four less hits, the same rbi and one more homer than Murph.

Talk about willful blindness. Murphy has been the best hitter in the league through 10 games with a 1.500 OPS. walker is slightly over .700.

OPS in April, lol.

I think we should calm down about Murph. Mets fans of all people know he can be streaky, yes he's hot right now but let's see if it continues

Solid major league hitter, nothing great. In the field is just as likely to making a great diving stop of a smash and throw the guy out from his knees as he is to muff a bouncer right at him and then forget how many outs there is. I'll take Walker any day over Murphy.

Murphy was such a great hitter to watch. Rarely struck out and had a great swing. Not to mention he went on a tear the likes of which I've never seen before in October.

He also was a crappy fielder and bonehead. So I'm fine with letting him go in exhange for Walker.

Great win tonight really stole the W from nothing.

The great thing about swapping Flores-Murphy for Cabrera-Walker is that the new middle infield make plays look routine while last year's didn't even have the range to get to some of these balls.

12-7 and 2 GB of the Nationals. Despite the Nationals insane hot start we are right there. The Phillies have been a surprise as they are 10-10 through 20 games

1 game back. Three players top 20 in OPS. This can be a very good team. Still early though.

The Phillies have very good young starting pitching. Not much else.

I think their young third baseman, Maikel Franco, is going to be very, very good. Saw him in interleague against the Yankees last year, and he had 2 homers, 2 other hits, and made 2 great plays at third (this was all in one game).

They are not as good as the Mets or the Nats, but they have more going for them then the Braves, who are a joke in every respect.

Mets starting pitching is like a buzzsaw. Opponents don't catch a break, especially if Colon pitches well. If Wheeler comes back strong could be serhing amazing. Outfield has depth, infield much improved up the middle. When Duda lays off bad pitches and looks to go with the pitch, driving balls on the outer part of the plate to left, he is a totally different player. Big question is whether bullpen will hold up. If they do, Mets could flirt with 100 wins
