Mets Hot Stove talk--2024-25

I don’t understand why you would give Soto essentially 800 mill and then nickel and dime Pete? We all know Soto will be gross the last 4-6 years of that deal and they were fine eating that 40+ mill a year for that span.

Funny how tens of millions of dollars is now considered nickel and dimes. I’d like some of those nickel and dimes please. 🤣

I don’t like the winkler signing- way overpaid.
I’d rather see one of the youngsters get those at-bats( Acuna, Baty, Mauricio)
I am/ was a big Pete fan, but he cost himself a lot of $$ the last 2 years.
He went from a MVP candidate to an all-star, to just above average in 2-3 years.
Offer Pete 4/100( 22, 24, 26, 28) with mutual opt- outs year 3 & 4

If the reports are correct of 3 for 65-70, we are making Pete a top 5 paid 1st baseman. I hardly consider that nickel and dime territory. He is a 1 dimensional hitter who is (potentially) in a decline with mediocre defense. 20-25m per year doesn’t seem out of line to me.

They have chosen to move on from Pete. Clearly a business decision. That’s fine. However, I think it’s fair to ask what is Plan B? Our starting pitching gambles are highly questionable with little certainty.

The Mets tried to tie Winker (at least how it’s being reported) signing to the mysterious “pivot”. That is ridiculous. Winker should have been brought back unless you think Marte was the full time answer at DH. Since they tried to trade him I don’t think so. Reported yesterday they also tried to move McNeil with no takers.

We can talk bullpen all we want because it’s obvious we need more arms there. However, even with Soto this lineup particularly the infield is not good enough. As currently constituted we are probably an 85 to possibly 90 win team. About where we ended up last season. We barely made the playoffs and people seem to forget the Braves are getting big brother Acuna and Strider back at some point. You can argue we are a 3rd place team again and fringe playoff team.

1. I don't think they moved on from Pete. I think this is just some posturing by Stearns/Cohen. But incredibly silly to use the Winker signing to spin it that way.

2. While, I don't think Pete is going to put up his rookie numbers again, I still think he has a lot left in the tank. Also don't think he's a Dave Kingman clone.

3. The Mets have no one to replace him at this point. I'm sure not counting on Vientos to be a better hitter or fielder than Pete. Or Bretty Baty + Vientos to replace Alonso + Vientos.

4. I'd rather sign Pete than trade for Vlad. Pete + whoever we'll give up > Vlad.

5. And yep, I still think the good PR of bringing back Pete will further energize the fanbase.

6. There is no salary cap. Overpaying for Pete doesn't hurt the Mets short-term and it doesn't hurt them long-term if Cohen is true to his word. I mean for goddsakes, the man paid Scherzer and Verlander $55M last season to pitch for someone else.

I’m sorry to say this, but this is all Alonso’s fault. He got offered a more than fair extension and turned it down and THEN hired Boras. I’m indifferent at this point because if he doesn’t sign here (and I’m still not convinced he won’t) he’ll probably have to settle for playing in a less than ideal situation for himself.

If TOR signs Bregman and Angels sign Santander, I literally have no idea where Alonso's getting 3/68.

Bergman’s got total disaster written all over him. I don’t know why these types of players go to “super agents” anymore.
