Mets Hot Stove talk--2024-25

Memo to Alonso: the Mets have you over hot coals, not the other way around. You will never get an offer as good as the original extension from the Mets that you turned down.

If I was Cohen, I would be livid reading that Boras is giving me an ultimatum. I think Boras may have Jordan Montgomery-ied Alonso out of a lot of money.

Peeeeete, Peeeeeete.
I am the Ghost of Hot Stoves Past.
Heed my warning.
Do not go the way of the Boras.
Or you will be condemned to wander the fields like meeeeeeeee.....

All of this is true.

Of course, Cohen can hate Boras, you and I can hate Boras but….Boras is the players guy. They love him because for the most part he maximizes their value. Sure he blew some negotiations but for the most part his sleaziness works.

Remember he tried to con the Mets on Kumar Rockers injuries. I am sure that Cohen remembers. Funny thing is Cohen has been known to “pal around” with Boras. He knows that they need each other. Crazy but true.

Where do you read that as an ultimatum? Without knowing salary details, I read it as throwing the Mets a bone. Allows Mets to kick the 1B problem down the road without a clear option this winter.

I interpret the part where it says “the deal is only available to the Mets right now” as an ultimatum.

Didn't realize MLB instituted a salary cap.

How does signing Jessie Winker (which I like) shows that the Mets are moving on from Pete?

Seems like more posturing - this time from the front office.

Unless the pivot is Winker/Tanner Scott/Jurickson Profar (or Santander).

I think Winker is one of a series of moves to come, if we do pivot from Alonso. Also sounds like we really want Vlad but that will take a while to materialize

I've been talking up Vlad for a while (he's really good and still young) but it will take a lot... first you have to trade for him - and Toronto isn't going to give him away - and then you have to pay him $400M to sign him long-term. That's pretty steep even for Steve Cohen's budget.

I agree. Winker alone is of course not replacing Alonso. This could be part of a string of moves that together allows the Mets to move on from Alonso.

It would be insane to trade for Guerrero. The price would be very high for a one year rental. This is the reason I was hoping Pete on a shorter term with him opting out next season was ideal. We could chase Vlad if that’s what they wanted.

Problem is he will have multiple teams chasing him and $400m might be light given he is 26 years old. Not sure if Mets should be locking up yet another player until he’s about 40 years old. Like Soto and the Yankees he’s not signing. These dudes saw what happened and that’s the dream scenario. He’s gonna be a Free Agent next year. Highest bidder wins.

This is moronic... So a one-year signing of a fourth outfielder for $7.5M shows that the Mets are planning to move on from Alonso? Laughable.
I actually think the Winker signing works best with Pete.

This is all posturing. Just give Pete 3 for 93.3 and defer 20-30 mill so everyone wins.

"The Mets made what they perceived as a last-ditch effort to sign Pete Alonso by offering him a three-year contract in the $68 million to $70 million range and, when that was rejected, began their pivot away from their slugging first baseman, The Post has learned."

Pivot! Pivot! Pivot! Pivot! Pivot! Oh shuttttt up!

I love how the Mets are trying to spin that they will “pivot to Plan B”. They must be feeding this nonsense to Andy Martino. Allegedly the “pivot” is signing Winker AND possibly, maybe a top of the market reliever. Ok, I am a diehard fan but there is so much bull—t in that “plan”. Signing Pete Alonso should not have precluded them from signing Jesse freaking Winker who was on the verge of release in Seattle a couple of seasons ago and a bullpen arm. (Top of the market lol 😆)

I am not anti Stearns by any stretch but his Harvard PR skills are grating. Say what you mean and mean what you say. If he didn’t want Pete that’s fine. My problem is they waited so long they left several lesser, cheaper options slip away. Baty starting at 3B and Vientos at 1B is not a championship infield. Not even close.
