Mets Hot Stove talk--2024-25

Sorry I may need to be caught up to speed because I have been lost in Johnny Land, but are we trying to get Vlad Jr?

Sigh.

If it's a difference of $5-7 million as is being reported, then the Mets never wanted him back.

Plan B better not be Vientos at first and unknown commodity at

unknown could be Ronnie Mauricio or some other youngster in minors

The tone of the Alonzo negotiations from the very beginning indicate that the Mets feel that Mauricio can handle playing third with Vientos moving to first.

Could be wrong but I have a hard time believing the Mets will throw away their good will and excitement from Soto signing only to let Alonso walk and not have a big trade in the works.

In other words I believe they never had any intention of signing Pete and have a move locked and loaded but are just waiting for the Alonso saga to play out. We will see!

Stearns doesn't sound too excited about Maurico when he's been asked about him. He keeps saying that he's missed and entire year and seemed to imply he doesn't know what to expect right away. I don't think that is his plan B...maybe a part of it?

I would think he feels more confident in Baty after finally getting him 60 AAA games -- especially after what Vientos did after getting a ton of AAA experience.

Cohen said the negotiations have been exhausting. He feels like the offers are asymmetric in Pete’s favour which means it is not the money but the break clauses. Cohen is a trader, he is never going to do a deal he thinks he is on the totally wrong side of.

No disagreement with the way they have handled the negotiations with Alonso.

However, it is a complete failure that no viable Plan B exists. Putting Vientos at 1B and Baty at 3B is not a plan for a team trying to contend. Vientos has exactly ONE season of success. In fact, the Mets were reluctant to give him a chance (remember Voglebach) because they openly didn’t believe he would hit for average or have a position.

Baty? He needs to actually WIN a job not be handed one. He has failed to seize the role on a couple of occasions. Gifting him the position based on what we’ve seen is folly unless we like watching him pound the ball on the ground for DPs. We’ve seen plenty of that.

Everyone forgets Mauricio tore his ACL and missed ALL of last season. On top of that Stearns has stated Mauricio will probably not be ready for ST. Doesn’t sound like a guy we should be counting on at least till he plays at Syracuse. By the way, he’s never been a good defender.

Acuna became everyone’s crush based on under 100 ABs. (39 to be exact) However, in Syracuse he had a bad .ops of .654 and his .obp was under .299. He profiles better as a middle infielder despite his 3 HRs in MLB. He will not be a big power guy.

They still have time but they are blowing smoke with a gaping hole behind Soto.

Just because the Mets are not advertising their Plan B on Times Square, doesn’t mean there is not one in place.

I think there is one. Why would Cohen, who has poured millions into this team (while still losing money) just to win, not have something else in place? Why would Cohen screw with the good will he built with the fans, throw it away with bringing in a subpar team this season?

Agree completely about the Plan B to date and have no reason to have confidence in Acuna, Baty or Mauricio at this point. Vents has only had one good season but he clearly has tremendous talent. You don't have a .998 OPS against great pitching in a long post season without it.

Clearly I’m venting. As you see from the length. I had to let it out. 😂 I am frustrated that you get Soto and then…?? Alonso or not.

I agree about Vientos I EXPECT a good season. However, “sophomore” slumps are real from the standpoint he will be pitched differently as teams scout and become more familiar. Add on our “plan” has him batting behind Soto I just don’t love the added pressure for a young player.

I haven’t even started on our starting pitching. Looks deep but not a lot of certainty. Lots could go wrong. I’d be more forgiving if I knew the offense didn’t have so many holes.

Well unless he has a hidden plan he literally said, we have to move forward with what we’ve got. There are no FAs left that would have an impact. A trade? I hope so. Shuffling Vientos to 1B and Baty who hasn’t proved Jack is not doing it for me.

I admit I am *venting* and yes they could trade for someone great tomorrow. Hopefully, he makes me look like a fool. I hope so. This “offense” is not enough to cover a pitching staff that is ok?

I saw some toss out rumours of Spencer Torkelson being on the trading block. He is a former 1st overall pick that hasn’t panned out but is still young with team control.

I saw that one. He strikes out over 30% of the time. A podcast guy was doing a breakdown. He’s another under .300 .obp guy. Massive hole in his swing. The trade ask would be Brett Baty or Ronny Mauricio. (According to the guy I was listening to)

Here’s another one Tristan Casas from Red Sox for Mark Vientos. That was Sports Illustrated. Don’t get the point with that one.

Here’s the “plan”.

I agree. There are a lot of unknowns and going into the season the team looks similar to last year without Alonso. I still felt we had a shot at 85 wins and getting close to a playoff spot last season best case scenario. It took 89 wins and an extra day of the season to get there.

I wouldn’t expect anymore but a playoff spot is possible. It is a little strange to spend so much money on Soto but be on the cheap in a lot of other positions.
