Mets Hot Stove talk--2024-25

haven't paid much attention since we lost.... we sign anyone of note yet?
Frankie Montas for 2 and 34 mill (second year being a player option) presumably to be the #4 starter has been the only thing of consequence.

Besides that, a bunch of solid minor league deals and end of the 40 man roster types.

Is there some idea of when Soto is gonna put a stop to all the speculation? I am about to turn on notifications for Jeff Passan tweets...

Recent chatter indicates between soon and the end of the winter meetings Dec 12.

PS I hope it's before Saturday dinner with my Dodger friends. They've been claiming they're better off without him as if there's salary cap implications. LOL

sevy turned in a solid season for us this year, but I never really liked him. His command issues were frustrating in a lot of big games and I’ll still never forget that meatball he threw to Bryce Harper in game 2 of the NLDS, or his godawful fielding in game 3 of the NLCS.

Didnt want to be committed to him long term. Good luck in future endeavors

The Severino deal was a success for both the Mets and Sevy. Nice rebound year and he gets paid. In no world would I commit 3 years to him. Wish him the best.

Now the question becomes where do you go to fill the rotation holes. We aren’t going to hit like Manaea and Sevy every off-season. Trade? FA? Who knows. Long term they need to develop starting pitching.

I think top prospect Brandon Sproat is projected to be promoted to the bigs this season.

Once we got Montas, the Sevy ship sailed and like @Jack Williams said, I’m fine with that.

The problem now is Manaea is looking at 3/80 or 4/100. Do you want to pay that? I personally would, but would also understand not.

I'm not saying the Mets were in the wrong for not matching the Severio contract.

I'm just shocked the A's of all franchises paid that much over that many years.

So is Blade Tidwell -- who may have a slightly lower ceiling but has a half-season more AAA starts. I think you slot them in at #6 and #7. If we get a big signing like Burnes, we can go into the season with Megill/Blackburn at 5 and that pair at 6/7. If we re-sign Manaea or sign someone similar, we will likely need to add a better #5 or maybe even a #4 to bump Montas to 5.

They’re also apparently high on McClean as well.

Makes sense to me to get guys to bridge you (and have high upside) until they’re ready to contribute, instead of getting stuck with bad contracts down the line.

McClean had a great finish after he ditched hitting. I still think he's a full year away. AAA has been a major obstacle for our top ranked pitchers recently. You get your first glimpse of veteran hitter with MLB experience there. Maybe he can contribute late in relief. Stearns loves that.
