Mets Hot Stove talk--2024-25

Do you think we keep Taylor, who will probably only cost around 3 million as well?

Nimmo, Marte, and Acuna can all play center. Baty and Mauricio can play left (Vientos as well). McNeil can play left and right. And we’ve got Gilbert and Jett.

The non-tender deadline is Friday, so this timing has me questioning him being on the roster for the first time!
Ask Siri.

I think we definitely keep Taylor. It's a bargain contract.

I'm not sure about Nimmo or Marte being able to play center anymore. If you look at savant's fielding page, you'll see that Marte had the 23rd worst Outs Above Average of anyone in MLB -- all of which attributed to his range. Nimmo was also -1 (ranked 118th).

To me, it may say a few things:
1) Marte is seen as a DH-only option and/or trade candidate. If you scroll all the way down to his game log, you'll see that the Mets record with him playing was 48-46! The Mets without him during that long stretch in late June through mid August was 28-21. He's close friends with Soto, so that may be the only reason he's on the roster come Spring.

2) Acuna/Gilbert could very well be trade bait this winter. Stearns almost traded Acuna at the deadline and Gilbert wasn't great in the Arizona Fall League.

3) Probably lessens the chance of us trading for a bonafide center like a Robert or Mullens, but who knows.

Mets just traded for centerfielder Jose Siri. They gave up Eric Orze, a solid young middle reliever.

Siri is 99th percentile in defense and speed with very good arm in center. 3 years of arbitration remaining and projected to make just 2.5 mill this year. Great trade IMHO.

I wonder what this means for Taylor? Some redundancy there now and a lot of youth we should be making space for in the outfield.
Siri can answer any questions too

I didn’t consider non-tendering Taylor as an option for a second before today. The timing did raise an eyebrow. He also just had two surgeries. But his contract will be a bargain.

I would trade Gilbert or Mauricio for a good return. I like them both, but there is positional depth in AAA and with Acuna — who I am more reluctant to trade.

I think Marte’s injuries have had a lot to do with his bad defensive metrics. It’s hard to believe he could fall from gold glove center to below average right fielder with his arm if injuries didn’t play a big part. His contract is rough at this point, bit off the books after this coming season.

I gotta laugh and not want him cut but Iglesias just tried to hit on my wife when he checked into her hotel tonight for the boomer gio show. This was before she told him she was a married yankee fan and didn’t know the omg song

The Mets non-tendered Grant Hartwig, Alex Ramirez, and Alex Young.

Marillac gets his answer on Taylor…looks like we will be building a very strong defensive outfield.

Alex Ramirez is a little surprising. He’s has a very disappointing 2 years, but he’s a plus glove I center and right with an absolute rifle of an arm. Stearns just couldn’t keeping using a 40 man roster spot on him.

Marillac should have confidently read Kranmars post earlier in this thread saying the Mets will go with a high end defense first Taylor/Sirri CF platoon. There was no need to wait this long for your response.

Please note: this is the first I ever used my name in the third person. And it certainly will be the last.

Giving the deal I'd want to give Buehler. I trust Stearns. Sounds like he has two plus pitches to build off of, and also just went 150+IP.
I think he is the Sevarino replacement. Player option after one year worked out successfully last season.

Cannot expect anything big to happen until Soto signs somewhere, so this is just a small piece of what should be a huge off season. Cohen will spend regardless of what Soto decides to do.

I like the deal. I was also curious about Matthew Boyd, but he got paid 14 mill and can't stay healthy.

At first, I was surprised by the money and player option, but once you dig deeper you do see a lot of signs of why he can bounce back + be durable. It's also nice to know Mendoza is familiar with him as a Yankee + the Brewers already made useful tinkers with him in a half-season (which, you'd have to assume, Stearns can hypothesize what they did).

I don’t like it as much as I liked the Manaea and Severino signings when they happened, but I don’t hate it.

Regardless of how high his ERA was, I always felt we were in for a rough night facing Montas. He’s got mid-level #2 starter potential with our coaching and resources.

You overpay a little for the shorter contract.

My dad gave me his Strat-O-Matic 1975 set sometime in the 80s when I was a kid and I played that game anytime I was alone in my house, set up all-star teams and played “seasons” with the 4 divisional teams I made up, kept stats and everything. I can’t hear the name Rico Carty and not think of that game, he was a beast.

Don’t like Montas at all. Especially for two years (player option) at $17m per. Yuck.

Of course, I am not losing sleep over a 5th starter. I also will give Stearns the benefit of the doubt. Maybe they see something they can fix. Now they still need a front line arm. Expecting every year to sign Severino and Manaea turnarounds would be a reach.

Pretty much how I feel. Don't love the deal but don't hate it. After the success our staff had last year any starter singing you gotta be hopeful. Plus his age ( 31 ) gives you a better shot than 36 for upside
