Mets 2024 Season

Early McCarver 83-85 was a great listen and taught us all a lot about the game and added so much to the broadcasts. From there I felt he kind of became a harder listen and a bit of a know it all. That said, he was the color commentator of most big baseball games for many years and for that is appreciated. RIP TIM.
Definitely showing my age here but I’ve watched the ‘86 hour-long video a hundred times (one of my “friends” stole my VHS tape) and his call of the Dykstra-Gibbons-HoJo double play to end the Padres game in that video was always my favorite call of his. He didn’t do the playoff games back then, obviously, so the Bob Murphy calls always bring me back to that magical year.

Side note* always loved Steve Zabriski’s call of Dave Parker dropping the ball with 2 outs in the 9th in that amazing Reds game. Like, he sounded genuinely shocked that Parker dropped the ball (which it was I guess). But, if Parker had caught that ball we would have never had the Knight/Davis fight at 3rd base and McDowell and Orosco flip-flopping between the mound and the OF. Thank you Dave Parker!

PS: the ‘86 video is in full form on YouTube if anyone ever wants to watch it. You’re welcome.

Good memory Guinness. I remember the San Diego game because it was a West Coast late night game at the end of August. My father was a printer and worked a late shift. He gets home just as the game was ending and we were screaming in the living room together. My mother was knocked out of bed with the noise. The call by McCarver was perfect. My father is long gone but you always remember those shared moments.

You did forget one play with the Reds game. Remember the Keith fielding a bunt throwing to Gary Carter (forced to play 3B because of the ejections) who pegs a perfect throw back to 1st base for a double play. That was some play.

I love in the movie Hernandez talking about that play and the pitcher bunting was a rookie or something and he’s like “I knew for a fact he was gonna bunt.” LOL he was on that bunt like 15 feet from the plate. Best fielding 1B I ever saw. And, have I mentioned I’ve seen the ‘86 video 100 times? Haha.
And, to add, was it Teufel covering 1st?

Yeah I think it was Teufel. Man so many dudes were moved around. Jesse flipping in the OF. Hearn in the game Gary at 3. That game was amazing.

I have the ’86 and “Amazin Era“ video somewhere. Good to know they are on YouTube. Mine are VHS and I don’t think I have a VHS anymore. LOL.

I know the words to “Wild Boyz” because of the Dykstra/Backman montage on the ‘86 tape. No BS.

saw Sengo "interviewed". Appears to have sense of humor. He noted that US mound has more slope than Japan's and baseball is somewhat smaller. Like that he is skipping appearance with Team Japan in order to devote himself to adjusting the US baseball, Is his "Ghost Forkball" something he learned from the legendary Syd Finch???

Also Jake delayed for a couple of days in Texas due to left side soreness.

A couple of days will evolve to the all-star break. ;)

Same with me and ELP's "Welcome Back My Friends"

In fact, I can't picture Roger McDowell without hearing this.
Yup, every time I hear that song on the radio, I think of this video.

And, I’m sorry for saying this out loud, the Bob Murphy call of Mookie’s grounder beats Vin Scully’s call every time. I know it by heart because of this video.
“Trickling…” >> “a slow roller”

"The Mets will win the ballgame! The Mets win! They win!"

Legit chills every time I hear that.

Tim McCarver will always have a place in my heart and head.
I grew up with the WOR lineup of Ralph Kiner, Tim McCarver, Steve Zabriskie and Gary Thorne.
And next to Kiner, McCarver looked like he was perpetually 25 years old.
His slight southern drawl always felt warm and welcoming. He had energy and enthusiasm. He was great at breaking down plays. Like the best broadcasters, he made you feel as if you invited him into your own home.
And so on days like this I'm back in Jackson Heights in my parents living room on the rug with my dad on the couch, tuning in to a crackly antenna broadcast and Tim McCarver welcoming me to Shea.

McNeil gets a nice mention in this article about the breakout players from last year who may or may not do it again this year.

Greg, thanks for the link. The one thing they didn’t mention was the NO shift rule. McNeil and maybe Nimmo were the two guys who clearly “directed” some hits based on the defense. I know some of these guys refused to hit directionally and others said it was “impossible” but anyone who watched saw them do it.

I do believe the no shift rule will actually help McNeil because he makes a lot of “hard“ contact period. Some of those line drives to RF fielded by the “2B” will be eliminated and are now, once again BHs! 🤗
