Max Hooper

I like Hooper, but I don't see this as a big loss at all.

I think most of us agree with you. It's just that the timing -- coming on the heels of Sampson's leaving coupled with other rumblings-- makes it look worse than it is.

Max Hooper will graduate this May from @StJohnsU in only three years with a B.S. in psychology. Congrats to Max! #SJUBB

Does that mean he can use that graduate school exemption and play next year and still retain both years of eligibility?
One of the first student/player who availed himself of provision was a reserve guard at from UNLV when to St Louis and played for 2 years
Grad work back to the Ivy
He will get 2 years, Bama has a transfer QB coming in from Florida St. Jacob Coker who was edged out by Heisman Trophy winning QB Jameis Winston and is the favorite to win starting job. Coincidently he was a back up to AJ McCarren recently graduated QB at Bama in high school. No extra charge for all the Bama info (in football that is!). :)

And he got his masters in psychology from 1 year of reading this board

A few thoughts:

His mother tweeted "I told you so Max. You should have stayed at Harvard"

Max was on record as saying he wanted to coach in the future and spent the season sitting next to the coaches on the bench. Apparently in one season he felt he learned everything he could from Lavin.

His grades at St. John's were actually lower at SJU than at Harvard. Perhaps he was proving a theorem that there must be lead paint chips in the cafeteria food.

Why in the world would a parent tweet something like that to their child!!!!! That is not something that should stay within the family not out on twitter.

Coker should do well there as the competition was not spa slam dunk for Winston. Didn't Coker get hurt last year during the season and miss some time or was that the other back-up?

100% agree the timing sux. if he announced in may most wouldnt notice or care. Damn I would liketo have those 4 seconds he played in the PC 2 OT game back.... That is all I will remember him for

to me as a fan, Max never seemed happy. As a fan who took his 7 yr old to a game, all the players walked by us one game- EVERYONE gave him a high five except Max. I was puzzled by this. If your next comment is, maybe he didnt see him, well, he looked right at him. Ill chalk it up to a bad day but we were both a little miffed by that. On a side note, Jakaar Sampson and Christian Jones were the most friendly guys. Both were great and left a great impression on my son. Thanks guys.

There is no way that Tweet actually happened, only way I could see it is if the family is not on speaking terms lol. Also, was he able to practice with the team the year he sat out? Let's not forget he was at St. John's for 2 years.

It's not really a big loss because Lavin had no idea how to use him. It's insane that he wasn't given a shot at a role position on this team. He's better off just about anywhere else. I was on board with giving Lavin the extension, it seemed like the right thing to do for the long term health of the program, but not anymore. I'll support the team no matter what, but I no longer see the value in SL. He simply has not done his job well enough to retain his position as head basketball coach.

Max was brought in because he's best budies with Karr. He had an outside shot but was slow-footed and a liability on D. In his best game in the NIT debacle he allowed at least as many points as he scored because he couldn't guard his man. Max's lack of D is what kept him on the pines.

Max Hooper was a transfer from Harvard who barely played at Harvard. I was all on board with seeing what he could do after all those tweets about him going to Taffner and hitting 291 of 300 three pointers but the fact of the matter is that he didn't EARN his minutes here. I largely blame him for that first Providence game loss. In the game for a minute when we're up 4 and immediately gives up an offensive rebound to Tyler Harris and fouls him. Then he goes all deer in headlights and turns the ball over up 1 with with 21 seconds left. Who knows what our season would have looked like with a Providence sweep.

Hopefully he gets his two years of eligibility and go to a MAC level school and hit a bunch of three pointers there because he isn't Big East caliber.

Part of the problem is Lavin still hasn't figured out how to use long-range shooters.

For those who criticize Hooper's D...how many lock down defenders do we have anyway?

The defense excuse is tiring. Our defense was terrible much of the season. He knocked down 40% of his threes while the rest of the team hit 34%.

The lack of defending and shooting kept us out of the NCAA

Right. Hardly anyone could defend and no one could shoot. That's not on Hooper or Frenchie.

Very easy and cheap analysis used (by quite a few on the board) since we had NOBODY on the team who could guard and keep their man in front of them. That's why our shot blocking ability was so over-rated as to be comical IMO. We scared no one from taking the ball to the rack. Granted, Hooper's D was okay at best but with a defensive scheme that accentuates HELP defense many teams play guys that can stretch a defense on the other end. How did playing with absolutely no consistent shooters on the court work out? Or put another way, exactly how many games did we win with our dominating defense? One last point, did Lavin and co. only find out that Hooper wasn't Mr. D AFTER he got here? Then why exactly was he recruited - to sit on the bench for 39 1/2 minutes to be run out on the court when we needed a desperation 3?

Apparently whoever guarded Hooper was a lockdown defender. The talk of him being a D1 talent is ludicrous. Do you really think Tommy Amaker, with 3 straight NCAA bids, would want a major conference talent walking after his freshman campaign. Hooper had a good deal. A chance to play for the best team in the Iyy's, go to 3 or 4 dances, AND get a Harvard degree. He ends up with nothing so far.

He has a St. John's degree and am sure he will use it well.

Sure, Andrew. A BS in Pyschology from St. John's really stacks up against any undergraduate degree from Harvard. With a BS in psychology, you basically need to go on to a a PhD to become a psychologist. IF you stopped here and became a therapist, it doesn't even require a psychology degree to get licensed.
