Max Hooper

Anyone who watched Hooper this season could surely tell he wasn't D1 talent. Slow footed, absolutely no handle (never even attempted to dribble either, looked scared when he got the ball in position to do so), bad rebounder, bad defender, couldn't create his own shot. Could he have been utilized in an offensive scheme that set him up for open 3's? Definitely. However, he pretty much never operated in the flow of the offense because he was so limited. I have to question why he was even brought in here in the first place.

Listen, many schools have a deadeye shooter, who comes into the game cold, catches the ball wide open and can get nothing but net. I never ever felt that any 20 foot shot from Max was money in the bank, because it wasn't.

I wouldn't even care if he had no other skills other than to get open in a pot and nail wide open shots, but when you are just average at your only asset, you don't get minutes - period. That's to not even consider that his gigantic blunder vs. Providence was the single biggest play among many failures that we didn't get to the NCAA's

Oh I agree, and to be honest, I've observed many of those players over the course of the season to compare with Max. To be honest, just about every single one I've seen is way more athletic and versatile than someone who just stands in the corner waiting for the ball.

It's not really a big loss because Lavin had no idea how to use him. It's insane that he wasn't given a shot at a role position on this team. He's better off just about anywhere else. I was on board with giving Lavin the extension, it seemed like the right thing to do for the long term health of the program, but not anymore. I'll support the team no matter what, but I no longer see the value in SL. He simply has not done his job well enough to retain his position as head basketball coach.

Max was brought in because he's best budies with Karr. He had an outside shot but was slow-footed and a liability on D. In his best game in the NIT debacle he allowed at least as many points as he scored because he couldn't guard his man. Max's lack of D is what kept him on the pines.

The thing is, Hooper DID get some pretty significant minutes in a couple of very important conference games early on. First, 18 mins in our first loss to Nova, which was a close game and in which he went 1-5. Then right after that, 15 minutes in our 2-point loss to DePaul, in which he went 1-4.

I have wondered whether Hooper's playing time in those key games triggered some dissention / chemistry problems among the players.

Part of the problem is Lavin still hasn't figured out how to use long-range shooters.

For those who criticize Hooper's D...how many lock down defenders do we have anyway?

The defense excuse is tiring. Our defense was terrible much of the season. He knocked down 40% of his threes while the rest of the team hit 34%.

what is tiring is saying everybody else was terrible on defense and use that as a reason to put our worst man defender on the floor and allow him to give up more points than he scores.

Apparently whoever guarded Hooper was a lockdown defender. The talk of him being a D1 talent is ludicrous. Do you really think Tommy Amaker, with 3 straight NCAA bids, would want a major conference talent walking after his freshman campaign. Hooper had a good deal. A chance to play for the best team in the Iyy's, go to 3 or 4 dances, AND get a Harvard degree. He ends up with nothing so far.

He has a St. John's degree and am sure he will use it well.

Sure, Andrew. A BS in Pyschology from St. John's really stacks up against any undergraduate degree from Harvard. With a BS in psychology, you basically need to go on to a a PhD to become a psychologist. IF you stopped here and became a therapist, it doesn't even require a psychology degree to get licensed.

I am sure he has plenty of connections and doesn't plan to stop here.

to me as a fan, Max never seemed happy. As a fan who took his 7 yr old to a game, all the players walked by us one game- EVERYONE gave him a high five except Max. I was puzzled by this. If your next comment is, maybe he didnt see him, well, he looked right at him. Ill chalk it up to a bad day but we were both a little miffed by that. On a side note, Jakaar Sampson and Christian Jones were the most friendly guys. Both were great and left a great impression on my son. Thanks guys.

My memories of Max toward the end of the season was he sat on the bench with a puss on.

To be honest, to each his own, but unless you have pro aspirations, to leave Harvard to go to St. John's you'd have to be an idiot to do that to be a fringe player.

True story that Wally S.'s mom told me. When he was being recruited, Harvard came along and offered him a scholarship. The way she tells the story, she said, "No Wally's bright, but he didn't have Harvard SATs. So I told Wally, 'Go to Harvard. Are you crazy?'" Wally responded, "Mom if I go to Harvard, I'll never make the NBA". So they get into a pretty big argument, and Wally goes to Miami of Ohio. His mom me told the story the summer that Wally signed a seven year, $70 million NBA contract. So she ends the story by saying, "Well, I guess he was right and I was wrong", and laughs. Really wonderful family.

Understand your point but let's not forget Hooper's from a totally different socio-economic sphere than Wally and his middle class LI upbringing. He has some freedoms that Wally's parents wouldn't have envisioned when Wally was picking schools.

Apparently, Hooper's father is loaded--runs a major talent agency in LA. So doubt he needs to worry about landing a job. But I agree that leaving Harvard for SJU was an unfortunate choice.

Wally's dad has been pretty successful. I know they had a huge house in Cold Spring Harbor, and Wally the NBA star stayed in what they called the attic with his wife after they were married when they came to LI for extended visits. If there is a model for really nice people handling their children's success well, it's that family. His father was raked over pretty hard for being such a cheerleader at Timberwolves games, but even at AAU he would cheer for both teams when one of his kids was playing. Nice, nice man. Wish them well, and by all means one of the nicest families that I met through AAU.

Oh yeah? Well Chip Hooper is teh 42nd most powerful person in the music and recording industry per Billboard. ;)

I like Hooper, but I don't see this as a big loss at all.

I think most of us agree with you. It's just that the timing -- coming on the heels of Sampson's leaving coupled with other rumblings-- makes it look worse than it is.

Plus, it hurts depth...and who knows if we would have developed into a serviceable bench scoring option

Hooper does have two years of eligibility left. I spoke to him today in class. No word on where he is going though.

When you see him again can you ask him the following questions? How did it feel that everyone wrongly blamed you for the double OT loss to Providence when if you or some other scoring option were in the game on offensive possessions down the stretch, when nobody could score, instead of Pointer the game would not have gotten to that point. Why didn't Jordan play down the stretch of the double OT loss? What happened to make every player on this team decide to supposedly run for the hills now? Why is your buddy Jakarr having delusions of grandeur, does he really believe that he will be drafted or he just wants out?. Does Gene Keady make fun of Lavin's coaching abilities behind closed doors? What really happened with Oblockpa in the BET? What's the real reason the team seemed to not care in the Providence and Robert Morris games? Does it bother you that you get no PT on a team where nobody can hit the side of a barn with a jump shot? Does it piss you off that everyone says you get no PT because you are a slow footed defensive liability on a team with no one on one defensive stoppers? Are the classes at St. John's really tougher than at Harvard? Does God's Gift think he's all that? Let us know if you get any good answers. Thanks in advance.

While you're at it, since Hooper went to Harvard, could you have him take a look at this post and correct the run on sentences and grammar to actually be understood by English speaking humans? Thanks. :)

Sorry, I guess it must be the SJU education. I guess judging by some of your posts that you never heard the expression, people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Lol, I thought people change their names all the time around here. I guess you thought I meant Big East or NIT or NCAA champs in 2014. What I was obviously referring to by my user name is whatever holiday festival/tournament they are playing in November/December 2014. I am still very confident.
