Max Hooper

Too bad I couldnt find any video.

Ugh! I wasn't trying to start a Heathfest...just needed someone to say Max is in a league beyond him. Sorry max...didn't mean to muddle your thread

Great highlight reel...

I like that the kid's shot (minus layups) is the same everytime. Its smooth and consistent rather he is standing in the wing waiting for the kickout, coming off a dribble, coming off of a pick/screen or even on that one fade away near the elbow towards the beginning of the clip. Wondering if I am seeing it through rose-colored glasses as I know we really need a shooter to compliment Harrison. As long he doesn't turn out to be Heath Orvis who I believe was touted as a shooter too, I think this could be a nice addition.

I always hate comparing but it was the first thing that came to mind. Pretty sure Heath was even a McAA candidate before he showed up, but his HS scoring just didn't translate into BE play.

Max is around 6'7 and has been a 3 point specialist forever. I think he played at Mater Dei for a year with Rheinhart (sp?) whom offered before he selected UNLV. They are similar players but Rheinhart supposedly scores in many different ways while Max is basically a zone buster. Tha connection to Karr is the key IMO.

pretty sure i like a 6'7" three point threat. if he can pass that makes him even sweeter of a pick up because they'll have to either stay mismatched with shorter guards on him or pull someone out of the front court to cover him and if he can move the ball around it will really open up the paint for our slashers and big men.

so many pieces of the puzzle floating around on the message boards. i can't wait for them to start falling into place (aka verbals or LOI's)

Please don't compare to Orvis. Hooper was an All Cali player believe. Hit 313 treys at Mater Dei and shot 50% from three there. He's also 6'6". He will fill a big need for us wich is outside shooting. If we offered him, Im pretty much sure the deal is sealed.  More Kyle Kuric than Heath Orvis.

Kyle Kuric?
Than you expect him to start Marcus?

How did this guy not play big minutes? He seems like a great find. I like his release - besides being quick, he has a nice high release so he can get it over defenders running right at him.

He has a rep for being a great shooter. Looks like he only played two games last year. Also looks as though he went to a familiar prep school by the name of Brewster

He is like best friends with Karr.

I am pretty sure they were roomies in 2010-11. Max is a pure shooter in the Mullin mold but not very physical. A zone buster for sure.

Why him and not Bernardi?

He is way better than Bernardi. Saw him play at IS8 last year with Jakarr, he can flat out shoot and was not intimidated by the environment. He has heart and can play. He will do well here.

I guess you forgot Bernardi is still signed and sealed with SMU.

I know that.
My point is, Bernardi was much more highly recruited and a local kid.
Why not offer him last year?

It goes to show that recruiting is fluid. I'm sure they didn't particularly feel a need for Bernardi during that time.

I don't get it.
We already have 2 studs his size (Garrett and Pointer).
This kid couldn't even play for Harvard.

Didnt they think Lin couldnt play in the NBA

Finally went to the old U Va box scores to get the name of the comparable player. It was Keith
Friel who played zone buster for Pete Gillen where everyone else was athletic and race horse in style. They hid Friel on defense from what I remember.  Less baseline in terms of where behind the arc but it opened up the game for the slashers.

Don't go from point A to point Z Tom. I never said that. Stylistically similar as a spot-up shooter. Kuric didn't start as a freshman. Kuric is a walk-on as well. Hooper while not a freshman class-wise, would essentially be one when he gets here. Hooper is not a star, but a fantastic shooter who is crafty with the ball as well. He's not real fast, but he can more than keep defenses honest with his outside shot and quick release which is deadly. It has been toooo long since we had a guy or two like this off the bench who can come in and stretch defenses.

Again, not the best athlete around at all, but I have no problem with a kid like this off the bench.

I don't think Kurick, I think Scott Wood of NC State. If this kid come in and bomb 3s like that I would be happy.

This guy's a carbon copy of Steve Novak. He's had pretty nice careers in the BE on Marquette and now the Knicks. Every team should have one. Hope he comes.

Very similar game, except Novak 6'10".

personally, i like his size and his shot, but from the videos i saw his release looked slow. Im sure Lav and the staff know more than all of us, so i will stand by the words of...." In Lav We Trust" go johnnies !!

Others have posted his release is quick.
Which is it?

haven't seen him in person but the shot in the video looks like a quick release. i trust Coach's eye on these. Steve Novak less 4-5 inches.

So i did some comparative analysis. I watched film on Kevin Love, Chris Mullin and Reggie Miller. I thought he had a quick release and he isn't too far off what I saw from Kevin Love, but Chris and Reggie make him look a bit slow. I never realized how quick Chris's release was. AND just so we don't start some crazy mess as we did when I said Heath Orvis yesterday, I am not saying he is in the same league as Chris, Reggie or Kevin. I was just looking at the release time. I'd have to put it at average now that I have seen these others.
