Was told that Matt just added @ LSU basketball to his follows
Hoping Matt stays - and not only because I hate the taste of crow - but if he doesn't there's a world class recruiter out there with previous head coaching experience and strong ties to St John's who'd be a natural fit. I can't believe his name hasn't come up in this thread. It's abNORMal.
Have two Kansas guys on my Tourney Top Gun pool. Have watched every second of both games. Caught Norm taking nap in 1st round game.
EXACTLY. He's bored. He takes the NCAA tournament for granted: five sweet sixteens in eight years, he's the most successful and accomplished assistant coach in college basketball. He's conquered Kansas, he needs a new mountain to climb.

Wade and Matt are good friends, Wade is 34 and Matt is 32. Their wives are also friendly. The offer is very firm and for around $200,000.00 more than he is presently making. The only reason that Matt has not left yet is that he is hoping that St. Johns will give him at least half of that amount. Matt gave up a comfortable position at Iowa State to come home and put St Johns back on the map. So far he has done a good job and really does not want to leave. He has family in the area and that is also very important to him.
It is very easy to talk about loyalty when you are not the one leaving that type of money on the table.
Quick story, when Fred Quartlebaum was here, Billy Donovan offered him a job at Florida. Q turned it down because he wanted to be loyal and remain at St. Johns. He was out of a job a few years later when Norm got fired.
I hope that Matt stays because I believe that he can continue to help the program. However, I will never question another man's decision to do what he feels is right for himself, his family, and his career
I like Matt A, and think the school should give him what he wants, but in the end, this is a slippery way for him to get paid.
All that jazz he has been spewing about "trust the process", i heart NY, sju loyalty, etc. is complete BS if he bolts
This is totally hypocritical. You're telling me that if another employer came to you with a better opportunity and a lot more money, you would turn it away out of a sense of loyalty.
Fact of the matter is sports is a cut throat business. You need to capitalize on your opportunities when they come your way. If the rumors are true, I have no problem with Matt coming to SJU with an offer and asking them to match it.
sju is his alma mater. its not the same as just another random employer.
Money talks and if anyone says that they would turn down a substantial increase they are kidding themselves. Alma mater or loyality is out the window. People think Chris is untouchable, well if he doesn't turn things around you can guarantee they will part ways and what happens to Matt. You can never get too comfortable in coaching. There is a reason why most asst. don't buy houses. Lol
No one with half a brain thinks Chris is untouchable. As for Matt, if it's not this offer they'll be others for more money. When I was an employee, I tended to value loyalty and comfort level over top $. I had the opportunity to jump at higher paying jobs a number of times, but always managed to work something out with my then current employer. As an employer, I have long time employees who I know could have left for higher paying jobs, but our personal relationships and how I've treated them has kept them with me. On the other hand there have been a few employees over the years who thought they had me over a barrel, and came to me asking for big raises at a moment in time when they thought they were indispensable. Only to find out very quickly how dispensable they were. My feeling has always been that if you pull that crap on me once, you'll do it again. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.
I would beg to differ on the untouchable topic, but that's ok. Also, you are right to some people loyality is important and the grass isn't always greener. Most of us doesn't have the opportunity to double our salary, I'm pretty sure if someone came to you and said I would double your salary you might think about it for 2 minutes. (Not saying that's what they will do) but if the money is significant plus cheaper cost of living then he needs to make his money now.
Not to speak for Monte but I believe he was commenting on the method not the loyalty factor. I agree that if Matt (or any employee) comes with a firm offer in negotiations that is fair. To play it without that offer is not, IMO. I have no idea what is really happening but that's how I took Monte's post.
"That is fair", give me a break with that nonsense. Firm offer or soft offer, competition is competition. No fairness involved. This is about money and a career and earning a living. Matt is young, has to make his money now. Can't reasonably or feasibly expect someone to pass on higher payer over loyalty to a school.
Love those on here bashing him now too. Lol. He was the second coming of Christ on here for so long, and now people want to belittle his value because he's in all likelihood looking at a significant pay raise.

Why are some people saying he hasn't done anything in the 2 years he's been here? He recruited every single person on the roster right now. I would argue he's the most important piece of the program so far and going forward.
Just playing Devil's Advocate here but we won 14 games. Like giving credit to the architect of a house with no plumbing![]()

Give me a break, fair means you do it professionally not that you don't do it. And my point is that were Matt to come in my office playing that game I would react the same as Monte, "thanks for the insight, there's the door." You can lie with snakes but eventually they will bite you. You want a raise, don't come in with a phony offer, come in my office and prove you've earned it and will continue to earn it, don't try to play me. You live in your world, I'll live in mine.

If Matt leaves we need to reconfigure some things badly. I wouldn't mind seeing Mitch move on. I like the idea of St. Jean, but if he's not going to get out there and recruit he should apply for NBA front office jobs.
Too bad we don't have a ton of cash to throw around -- you could pay a Romar or Gottfried-type guy handsomely for two years with the understanding that their rep would have been rebuilt by then. Then move on to the next top-notch recruiter who gets fired because the X's and O's are spotty.
A guy with a proven track record of X's and O's would be nice. I don't care if you pull him from juco, D-2, or high school. If fact, if you pulled him from those places I'm sure he'd be happy with the pay bump and stick around awhile.

Mullin coaching with Norm as his assistant would be for me the equivalent of the gold rings Radio Raheem wore in DO THE RIGHT THING. LOVE and HATE

Really? He's making 250k here. So LSU is offering him 450?? Matt is a good assistant with a solid reputation don't get me wrong, but that would put him in the absolute upper echelon of assistants nationwide in terms of salary.

What's your instinct on Matt & SJU rewarding him w $ or whatever it takes...
Thanks[/quot
I know that Matt has been in talks with the Administration, but I have no idea what they are thinking in regards to compensating him. However, I disagree with Monte and others who feel that he is wrong in doing this. He is being offered an opportunity to make more money. The only thing holding him back is his love for St. Johns. Don't know about anyone else on this board, but if I told my wife I left two hundred grand on the table I would be looking for a place to stay.

Where did I say I think he is wrong for leaving if someone offered him nearly double what he is making now?

Kenny Payne makes 700000 at Kentucky. If the guy who recruited the 14 win team at SJU is worth half that, that's a number no one can touch.
I have suddenly become a huge Mike Rice fan.
Matt just started following Abita Brewing Company on twitter
