Really? He's making 250k here. So LSU is offering him 450?? Matt is a good assistant with a solid reputation don't get me wrong, but that would put him in the absolute upper echelon of assistants nationwide in terms of salary.

Frankly,talking about a job change and the money that is being mentioned is out of step with his accomplishments at STJ Let him recruit some big name players which propel the team not only to the NCAA but winning games in it and do it perhaps over a 2-3 yr period and conversation of top $$$ can be talked about but frankly show me 1st

The only reason that Matt has not left yet is that he is hoping that St. Johns will give him at least half of that amount. Matt gave up a comfortable position at Iowa State to come home and put St Johns back on the map. So far he has done a good job and really does not want to leave. He has family in the area and that is also very important to him.

It is very easy to talk about loyalty when you are not the one leaving that type of money on the table.

Quick story, when Fred Quartlebaum was here, Billy Donovan offered him a job at Florida. Q turned it down because he wanted to be loyal and remain at St. Johns. He was out of a job a few years later when Norm got fired.

I hope that Matt stays because I believe that he can continue to help the program. However, I will never question another man's decision to do what he feels is right for himself, his family, and his career

Quick Story 2. When Pat Kennedy was the Head Coach at FSU, he offers an assistant position to Ron Rutledge at a higher salary than he was getting here. Rutledge wound up and St. John's did increase his salary (I don't think it matched the FSU offer).

Kenny Payne makes 700000 at Kentucky. If the guy who recruited the 14 win team at SJU is worth half that, that's a number no one can touch.

Eh. Its not my money. I wouldn't pay JPP and his 7 1/2 fingers $15m a year either. But again, it's not my money and I'll be happy to welcome him back on my team.

Feel the same way about Matt A. Is he worth this much? Idk. But I'll be happy to see him return.


Also. Mike rice is a psychopath and you know this. Pretty sure you were amongst his biggest critics on these boards.

I think Mike Rice can match Matt's aggressiveness in recruiting and would add coaching ability to the staff.
I am not sure why I like him but maybe I was conditioned to accept corporal punishment by Sister Mary Magdalena in Catholic school. Here's a picture of her correcting me on my plagiarizing the 10 commandments.

put me at the front on the Rice train. Either way would love to get him. Him and Matt could kill it recruiting and he teaches defense and on court awareness with his ball throwing techniques

Guess it is an age thing, I will be 69 in June and am also up thinking about St. Johns, lol.
Nuns in elementary school. Christian Brothers in high school, and Vincentian's in College. I survived it all.
