Matt A

I might not agree with the tactic of using Zach to plant stories but let's be honest it's not like he is getting paid what the other assistants are ( sans St Jean ) Slice and Richmond both making more and he pretty much is the only one out on the recruiting trail from what the sightings and comments that people have put here from twitter etc so if he wants to make more money then ask for it. If Wade came up with a much bigger number then I'd be taking it also. It's not like anyone can say our staff is a lock for success as currently constituted. There is definitely progress over the year before in wins and losses but I don't think anyone can say for certainty that we are a lock.

But depositing a paycheck in your bank account is a lock

My assistant is excellent and I don't feel like losing her to someone else so I pay her extra out of my own pocket to supplement what she gets paid from my firm

Why are some people saying he hasn't done anything in the 2 years he's been here? He recruited every single person on the roster right now. I would argue he's the most important piece of the program so far and going forward.

Just playing Devil's Advocate here but we won 14 games. Like giving credit to the architect of a house with no plumbing :)

Also transfers like Owens, Williams, Simon & Clark. He also is prime contact for most if not all 18 & 19 kids. JIm B of Cuse yesterday noted importance of having two recruiters. Unfortunately we have all eggs in one basket & are vulnerable to his leaving. Even if Matt stays, I hope they assign someone to be the second recruiter, not just sending Mitch or St. Jean out there occasionally. As Panther has noted, it is a grueling, time consuming, competitive process.

On the bright side, since this is taking time, if Matt A. and Lovett do eventually leave, it would have allowed many posters ample time to sharpen their knives before carving them up on the way out.

Throw in a few daggers aimed at Mullin and the remaining staff, and we will have more than enough reading material here to carry us through the summer and into November.

Are you hinting at using your vast fortune to help pay for Matt? ;)

I like Matt A, and think the school should give him what he wants, but in the end, this is a slippery way for him to get paid.

All that jazz he has been spewing about "trust the process", i heart NY, sju loyalty, etc. is complete BS if he bolts

This is totally hypocritical. You're telling me that if another employer came to you with a better opportunity and a lot more money, you would turn it away out of a sense of loyalty.

Fact of the matter is sports is a cut throat business. You need to capitalize on your opportunities when they come your way. If the rumors are true, I have no problem with Matt coming to SJU with an offer and asking them to match it.

Have a much bigger problem with what Slice did compared to what is allegedly going on with Matt. Give the guy a raise he's earned it anyway. Get the most out of him for the next two seasons and assume he will move on at that point. To lose him now would be crippling IMO.

Didn't Lovett supposedly help recruit Ponds? Tell Lovett if he stays he can have Matt's salary next year? Works for me! See sometimes you have to think outside the box.

I'm hearing crickets :)

sju is his alma mater. its not the same as just another random employer.

Money talks and if anyone says that they would turn down a substantial increase they are kidding themselves. Alma mater or loyality is out the window. People think Chris is untouchable, well if he doesn't turn things around you can guarantee they will part ways and what happens to Matt. You can never get too comfortable in coaching. There is a reason why most asst. don't buy houses. Lol

Is Matt's contract up for renewal?

Would be nice if all the coaches made a big effort to recruit, especially since they are free to do so. They need to be better than everyone else that's out recruiting. Effort, effort, effort.

No one with half a brain thinks Chris is untouchable. As for Matt, if it's not this offer they'll be others for more money. When I was an employee, I tended to value loyalty and comfort level over top $. I had the opportunity to jump at higher paying jobs a number of times, but always managed to work something out with my then current employer. As an employer, I have long time employees who I know could have left for higher paying jobs, but our personal relationships and how I've treated them has kept them with me. On the other hand there have been a few employees over the years who thought they had me over a barrel, and came to me asking for big raises at a moment in time when they thought they were indispensable. Only to find out very quickly how dispensable they were. My feeling has always been that if you pull that crap on me once, you'll do it again. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Matt A. has proven that he can recruit at the highest level. He deserves to be properly compensated for that. I hope SJU opens up the checkbook, otherwise another big time school/program will.

I hope this one goes our way. Otherwise it will be a bad look for the school if we don't keep one of our own. Pay the man!

In my opinion, nobody in the staff can claim that they've accomplished anything until the program starts to win. Period end of story.

It better be a hell of a lot more money to tempt him to move from New York to Louisiana away from his "dream job."

Eh, have to take into account that cost of living in Baton Rouge is significantly cheaper than NY.

If being in NYC, helping to re-build his alma mater and being an asst to an NYC/SJU/NBA legend don't weigh very heavily in the equation, then we have very little chance of keeping him for the long haul anyways.
