@Marquette, Sat. Jan. 9, 2pm, YES(FSN) & 570 AM

Wilson hit two big threes and our guys could not match it. Great effort.

And we're more than one year away.

It takes a new staff four years to establish a strong program where bad games are infrequent.

With the year of experience under their belt, all of the returning kids should be solid contributors at the very least. Maybe a kid like Sima goes from "solid contributor" to "star". Add in Lovett, Ponds and Ahmed and you've got the nucleus of a middle of the pact Big East team and likely NIT participant. I would gladly take that as part of our re-building process. Now if we get Fruedenberg and /or Rawle, then expectations rise slightly. The following year I am expecting an NCAA bid. Any way you slice(no pun intended) it, we are headed in the right direction.

Monte, I'm expecting a slight improvement next season unless the German kid is a lottery pick type talent. We'll still be very young next year with all the players being first and second year players. The talented point guards are freshmen. I'm not confident about a winning season.

The following year, we have enough experience to make the tournament.

Year four should be the year that the Program becomes the power we all want to see.

In the interim, it is encouraging to see that Mullin has these kids working hard and improving.

I think we will be more than marginally improved. We almost just beat two of the best teams in he Big East and gave Providence a run and we have half as much talent as we are going to have next year.

Yes we will still be young but bring in two top 40 guards, the best jc player in America and a top international prospect amongst others. Couple that with great improvement of mussini, Yakwe, sima, Ellison already and I think we will have some effective talent at all spots on the floor.

It will be nothing like the big holes we have this season. I'm not saying we will be a final 4 team, but I think it will be more than marginal improvement with a serious injection of talent and added experience.

Likely a year away from being a year away. Sorry for repeating, but that's what I read. That said, I think we will enjoy next year.

Paultz do you see us as a .500//NIT bid team next year?

Oh yeah. With Lovett at PG, I would expect NIT next year & making some noise in NCAA the following one.

Can you guys tell me why you are so high on Owens. I wasn't that impressed when I first heard that he was transferring here and I have concerns with his lack of weight. Yet, everyone is saying that he will take all the minutes from guys who are currently playing and contributing. What am I missing?
redmen.com hype machine. We are great at that :)

Pure fanboy speculation on my part, but here's my reasoning: In addition to his size, his athleticism appears to be on a whole other level from guys like Amar or CJ. I share your concerns about his weight but I think he'll bulk up a little. Even if he doesn't though, he blocks shots and finishes around the basket. He's a true big as opposed to Amar whose ability to shoot won't be very valuable next year. Also as much as I love the energy he brings, Amar is pretty bad defensively. That being said, nobody has seen the guy play too much since HS (didn't get many minutes at Tennessee) so your point is well taken, who really knows for sure?

For what it's worth, here's what Matt A said about Owens on Twitter the other day:

how does the staff see Owens fitting into the mix?

...makes shots, can stretch defense, high level athlete, another rim protector. Very excited about him

I too am looking forward to next year but I am not giving up on some upsets this year. This team has growing talent, they seem to be settling into a system and they are competitive most of the time.

That being said I am looking forward to About mid-December of next year when the next new batch are finally settling into the system and the doomsdayers begin to quiet down, as they spend longer frames of time contemplating metaphorical ways to continue to futilely compare what's going on right now to the Jarvis/Roberts/Lavin era.

Talk about doing it with mirrors.......................
We really have 1, maybe 2 BE caliber players on the current roster.
We'll have 4 more come October.
Very excited for the future.

I think there are more than 1 or 2. Mussini, Sima, Johnson, Yawke, even Amar with the right system is a BE player

What system is that for Amar? Nice kid, who hustles, but won't see much time next season.

Agree. Hasn't been hitting the three lately.

Jack, does Yakwe remind you of David Russell a bit? David was a more skilled lefty early in development & less of a power guy, but for whatever reason, I think of DR when I see Yakwe.

Yakwe does remind me of David Russell
Russell never developed a consistent mid-range jump shot
If Yakwe does, look out!!!

Maybe time has clouded my memory, but I don't see the connection at all ... especially on the defensive end.

I agree Redken, Russell was a way more competent player as a freshman. A real game changing talent out of Bellport High.

Spread the floor and dribble drive, Play with one big(not him) and I think he can be ok. I could be wrong, but we covered 2 games in a row...

They played well but just couldn't hit the shots that 2nd half stretch. Would have been nice to steal one. Oh Well. At least we covered the point spread

I believe that the covering of the spread automatically qualifies the game as a "moral victory"

It could be a lot worse. We could have coach Willard.

#buildingaprogram

I am man enough to own my opinions when they are wrong but I am never so classless as to gloat. Should have asked you for the powerball numbers Einstein

But you were "classless" enough to attack me for my own opinion of Willard and Seton Hall. Hypocritical much.

By the way, the powerball probably will soar to slightly over a billion dollars by Wednesday. Go play it. You may have a better chance of winning it than Willard has of "building a program" at the Hall.

When I see the game he played against Syracuse and even Weds night against Xavier, I think he has a lot to offer. Does need to calm down and avoid dumb fouls. I think with Sima out he will be forced to play more and hopefully relax. We shall see.

That is true as far as me attacking you and being hypocritical; obviously we both have an "edge" sometimes and rub each other the wrong way. I will be sure in the future to not respond to any of your posts.

Surprisingly competitive yesterday but for guys who have been around this program for a long time (seems like 90% of the posters here) remember that nearly every patsy we played at Alumni Hall put up a good fight until the last quarter of the game where SJU would slowly take control and play well when it counted.

A game like yesterday raises hopes that there are a few serviceable players on this roster, and maybe even appropriately so.

Glad Yakwe is getting serious minutes after getting restricted time of late. There's a future for this kid, and getting court time will help him immensely.

When I saw Marquette playing man (I snuck in from the garage doing some chores 8-9 times), I knew it would not be a banner day for Mussini. Unless we run a crisp offense that will spring him off screen for open looks, blanketing him in a man kills his effectiveness. On the plus side he is actually looking like a point guard, with a credible handle and head always up. Maybe Frank Alagia is talking to him.

Ellison proving doubters here were premature in their declarations that he doesn't belong at D1. Good for him.

C. Jones showing why Lavin buried him on the bench on an NCAA team. His stat line has shrunk in BE competition, and he has had every opportunity to show he can play.

Nice stat line from Durand, but were bolstered by two very late 3's after the outcome was sealed. They may have been of the "Get mine" variety, but that may be harsh. Still, a good hustler, and a good game from him.

You'd have expected with a 3 guard starting lineup that Felix would be crashing the boards, which was sorely needed. He came up empty 0. I just don't know what you can pencil him in for, except enormous hustle and energy, which isn't a bad thing at all.

First look at Ellenson - my gosh did Marquette grab a plum. My guess is that Wisconsin didn't get him because Ryan was honest about his intentions to retire.

Considering what we gave up in height, a really nice effort by our guys. I don't think the home court would change the outcome, but perhaps you can move Marquette into the column of teams we could beat at home if all goes right.

Ryan leaving Wisconsin was not the key factor in Ellenson selecting Marquette. The primary reason was to play with his brother, who had transferred there from Minnesota.

I agree Redken, Russell was a way more competent player as a freshman. A real game changing talent out of Bellport High.

Russell came here a much more skilled player and finished product. Yakwe much more raw but more athletic and with a ton of upside. Russell's lack of improvement over his four years reminds me a lot of Zendon's four years. Both seemed to have peaked as freshmen.

Owens played in the red- white scrimmage and impressed me with his size and shooting ability. I think he will be an offensive threat down low.

For the few games Yakwe played. He seems like he is really improving. Forced to play C against Marquettes bigs, what did he have 10 rebounds and 6 blocks? W Sima out he will get a ton of minutes. Next year a 4 and 5 of Yakwe and Sima looks real good and the following year great. Throw in the German kid , who I think is a younger , but better version of Amar and Owens and things are looking up in the big dept. Unfortunately ,I think Jones and Amar should only get maybe 10 min each off the bench on a good team. The other side of the coin is Amar will be a Jr. And Jones a Sr.. We will see how the experience stacks up vs the German kids talent, but youth.

The practice team with Owens and Lovett is no push over against the first team.

Not really, he reminds me more of Walter Berry in low with a soft touch.

Monte you know I love you but I wish to clarify a few things. Russell was a MCAA and a 6 7 great athlete. Yakwe is the identical size and also a great athlete but not a top 20 high school player. Both Russell and Zendon peaked their sophomore/ junior seasons. Russell was first team BE in 1982 when the league was great and filled with star talent. He was second team BE when he graduated in 1983. He did improve but did not become the complete player he could have or that we fans hoped he would become. Yakwe if he is well coached and works like a Trojan could become a great player down the road. At present he seems better as a freshman than Russell was as a senior defensively but his offence is far behind. As we all know defense is based on effort. If yakwe will put the same effort into his offence as he does with his defence he will be a hell of a baller. Another reason why I believe Yakwe will improve is that as of next season we will be two deep at every position with serious talent. Practices will be spirited and challenging. Every player will improve if they remain with the program. Unfortunately for Russell and Zendon they had no one to properly challenge them at their position at SJU. That fact hindered their development IMHO.
