@Marquette, Sat. Jan. 9, 2pm, YES(FSN) & 570 AM

I too am looking forward to next year but I am not giving up on some upsets this year. This team has growing talent, they seem to be settling into a system and they are competitive most of the time.

That being said I am looking forward to About mid-December of next year when the next new batch are finally settling into the system and the doomsdayers begin to quiet down, as they spend longer frames of time contemplating metaphorical ways to continue to futilely compare what's going on right now to the Jarvis/Roberts/Lavin era.

Talk about doing it with mirrors.......................
We really have 1, maybe 2 BE caliber players on the current roster.
We'll have 4 more come October.
Very excited for the future.

I think there are more than 1 or 2. Mussini, Sima, Johnson, Yawke, even Amar with the right system is a BE player

What system is that for Amar? Nice kid, who hustles, but won't see much time next season.

Agree. Hasn't been hitting the three lately.

Jack, does Yakwe remind you of David Russell a bit? David was a more skilled lefty early in development & less of a power guy, but for whatever reason, I think of DR when I see Yakwe.

Not really, he reminds me more of Walter Berry in low with a soft touch.

I'm sorry, but Yakwe is not even close to Walter Berry. Berry was an unstoppable scoring force in the post and was smooth while doing it. The only solid comparison between Berry and Yakwe is that they are both left handed, in my opinion.

Are we speaking of WB as a freshman? Wasn't he a transfer?

Yes. He came as a Sophomore.

Walter Berry was 20 when he played his first game for SJU. I believe he was a college junior his first season at SJU.

Berry spent his first year at St. John's as a non-qualifier. NCAA ruled that he still didn't qualify when that year ended. Then he spent a year at San Jacinto JC before returning to St. John's for what would be his third year of college ... but with three years of eligibility remaining. After playing for two of those years ('84-'85 and '85-'86), he passed up his final season of eligibility to enter the NBA draft.

Yakwe reminds me of Kenny Battle on those Illinois teams with Gill and Anderson

You know I don't think I have ever felt bad for a team before. I have felt bad for myself as a fan but not for a team. These guys are competitive every game and just do not have the talent to win these games. If Mullin does not have them mail in any games as the losing continues he should get votes for BE coach of the year even if they win just one game.
I am serious about that BTW. people can start the critique next season if they so choose.

Nice kid, but in 4 Big East games, CJ averaging 4.75 ppg, 5.4 rpg, with 1.8 turnovers per game. He has been to the FT line just once in 4 games, and is shooting 9-28 from the field mostly from short range.

Not staying for his third year was the worst mistake of his life.

Berry's problem wasn't his talent or skills. He already had NBA ability to score, and proved it in his time there. His defense was poor, but really there are a lot of guys in the NBA who don't play defense. His larger problem was that he didn't get along with coaches, and bounced to 4 teams in a brief period of time. Later on while in Europe he was invited to NBA camps, but he was already making a decent amount of money in Europe and wanted guaranteed money and didn't want to try out.

Also after winning Player of the Year honors his final season at SJU, I remember an interview with Red Auerbach where he assessed the upcoming NBA draft. Auerbach said, "I wouldn't want him. He doesn't play defense." Even as POY, Berry slipped to the mid teens in the 1st round.

One more year at SJU woudn't have changed that.

7 assists, 2 blks, 2 stls, 4 charges taken. Struggling with his shot for sure.

Why? I would have left for big money too. What if he got injured (like the UL kid in the NCAA Tournament a few years back.) Then he wouldn't be a high draft pick. Yeah maybe he could have used that 3rd year to get better, but you gotta think about what ifs also.

I'd really love for him to prove me wrong. He really doesn't have to look over his shoulder on this roster, and he shoudl just go out and play his butt off. A guy his size and strength has to finish a lot better and be going to the line 6-8 times per game.

fg % not good but I'm curious as to what kind of minutes is he averaging per game ?

I remember the late Sonny Dove as a sophomore and Yakwe reminds me of his athleticism.

But light-years behind in his skills level.

I don't know what's with all the comparisons - I don't get it. He looks like Berry, but not as a player but in mannerisms? He looks like Dove, or whomever. To me with that damned headband he looks too much like Durand Johnson, and without the benefit of a 60 inch screen 3 feet from me and a DVR to freeze play, I'm asking the guy next to me a couple of times per game who just scored the last layup. But that comparison has a lot more to do with the fact that I am blind, which makes a lot of you guys I've met look a lot better.

In a lot of ways he looks skilled. He definitely knows how to play the game, and appears he can be effective 12 feet and in. Rugged enough to grab rebounds, block shots, guard his man. Doesn't appear to take wild shots, or shots out of his range. I don't think its being overly gratuitous by saying he's going to get better and better, and I believe he will be a valuable piece of any squad Mullin can field over his tenure here.

In big East play more than I think he's played 24,28, 18, and 15, I think. I'd love to see him put up a 12-15 point game with 8-10 rebounds.

Agree 100% hes gotta finish better. Do think he should be getting to the line more but four game stretch doesnt really tell the story on that stat.

At the close to the pre-Big East season, I said I would wait for 6-8 Big East games before I declared CJ a successful reclamation project by Mullin. Conceivably any Big East starter should but up better numbers against lower rung competition. The first 4 games aren't encouraging, and are a smaller sample. There is a yard stick that if any player takes the ball to the hole they should score or get fouled 7 out of 10 times, minimally 6. Making 9 of 28 in league play with only one free throw is really poor productivity from a guy who is shooting 10 feet and in, and if he wants to see more than 20 minutes a game, he must improve upon that.
