Marquette Game

By the way just in case anybody thought this issue was dead:
Coach was back to looking like a cross betweven a club bouncer and a priest (minus the collar).

Since we need a little help from above he went with the Father Maher look. They actually could be brothers they look so close. I didn't mind it personally

Where were you tonight mike?
Paultz said you were "sick"...

Have the flu real bad. thought it was a cold but got a lot worse last night and went to Dr today when my temp went to almost 101

Just so you know, the Taco Bell near St. John's doesn't give you a free chalupa when your temperature breaks 100.

oddly enough I still have an appetite but the problem is it hurts so damn much when I swallow. My body aches so much I couldn't even drive to taco bell :)

To paraphrase Robin Williams, a sore throat is God's way of telling you that you eat too damned much. :) Feel better and don't spread the flu down Franklin Avenue, at least not south of 7th street. If misery loves company I have a sore throat from yelling so much today - it's a good sign - in the glory days I'd come home with a sore throat after every game.

The way Carlino smoked open threes it was a good call to foul him, risking two points to prevent a three that could have tied the game. Good call.

I don't have a problem with the foul but how about putting Stewart or someone else in to give it? Pointer getting his 4th on that play was ridiculous. Also double Carlino off the in-bounds and make someone else shoot the fouls; basic strategy that escapes our staff even after calling two time outs.

Just think of the risk of putting in a bench player to do something like that in the waning seconds (remember how brilliant it seemed to put in Hooper to make FTs to seal a win last season). Anything could happen, like fouling in the act of shooting, or just plain missing the assignment. I understand the concerns about foul 4, but we were down to the last possession or two, and to me it made sense. If Carlino didn't have the ball, someone else would have gotten fouled, and they did it in the frontcourt to burn off a couple of ticks.

To answer those who say Lavin should have put Pointer on Carlino sooner, a couple of things. First, Carlino had a relatively quiet first half, and then lit up very quickly and (very annoyingly) was animated like he just snorted coke, hitting 3 or 4 shots in rapid succession. Putting Pointer on Carlino was calculated , because to risk fouls and create other height mismatches could have backfired, especially if Marquette began to pound the ball inside. In fact Marquette should have adjusted, but didn't - and there is a shelf life to making a move like that. I thought the move was made at the right time because it worked and we won.

Brilliant post, Beast. (Serious, no sarcasm). Some of these basketball gurus who question every move the coach makes, even the ones that work, should sit up and listen.

DLO should have played less . I also think we would have won the DePaul game if he was used less then. This is on Lavin. We have other good guards. I also think if DLO played less vs. Marquette, the game would have been won by a wider margin. Lavin cant take the shots, but coaching does make a difference in wins and losses.

I would only start Harrison in the Puke game, see how his health is, and get him out of there if he can't hold his own and if the game gets out of hand. BE is more important than this game.

PM me, Desco. In person I'm not so despicable and unlikeable. I'm still both, but just not as much. Perhaps meet for lunch or something.

I thought the intentional foul with 11 seconds still left in the game was ridiculous. We were still shooting 1 and 1 so a quick foul by Marquette would have given them the ball back with about 10 seconds left with the possibility of only being down a point and nothing would have been accomplished. Thankfully Greene got a breakaway dunk and was able to run a bit of time off the clock

I couldn't agree more. Maybe you foul with three seconds left, but if Jordan for example had gotten fouled and missed the one and one Marquette has ten seconds to win the game with a two pointer or foul shots. I hated that play.

Heck more often than not teams will take a quick 2 and then foul with that much time left

If we didn't foul and they hit a three to tie the game, people would be complaining that we didn't foul. SJU won the game. This nitpicking will drive you crazy.

To join the mjmaher too much personal information club, I love Novita. Wife and I had our rehearsal dinner there and she also had her baby shower there. Been there the past two years for mother's day brunch. Also, my wife had the flu two weeks ago and both my kids had a stomach virus early this week.

I'm actually happy we won an ugly close game for once, especially after losing an ugly close game. When you have two games that come down to the last 10 seconds, going 1-1 is expected. I'm not too concerned about Harrison.

Those last 11 or whatever seconds were nuts. Harrison so clutch. Had he missed the first Marquette would've had last shot down one. Fouling after I thought was dumb. Way too much time remaining I've never seen a player fouled like that with so much time. SJU fortunately broke away for a layup afterwards.

Regardless, I don't care how sloppy it was a win is a win.

Can't say I agree with everything, but a lot of it is spot on.

I do agree with Fun's point regarding Greene's dunk at the end of the game, should have dribbled into corner to run out the clock. In fact that's what I expected when Jordan hit him with the pass.

I'll take the dunk. Anything can happen trying to run 11 seconds off the clock, including a turnover or tieup (see Max Hooper). The way we lined up for it, I was expecting one of our guys bunched behind midcourt to break long, but the way it was executed was actually more elaborate and reliable than a hail mary for a dunk.

Is it heresy to suggest if Dee is not at least 90% fit for Duke, it would be ok to rest him to be at 100 % for Creighton & PC next week, assuming the trainer feels that supposition is correct? Much more important games, considering beating Duke is unlikely.

I don't think its a bad idea Paultz, however can you imagine what a W against Duke would do for these kids and how it can impact the rest of the year? A loss wouldn't be devastating, but a win would not only do wonders for the kid's confidence, but also for our chances of making the tourney. IMO he would have to be a lot less than 90% for me to sit him and, in effect, forfeit the game.

Problem with sitting DLo is we would probably get killed. And this will obviously be the most viewed SJU game all year, it is important to me we put a good product on the floor

I'm guessing DLO will not sit unless his leg gets amputated. there isn't a noticeable limp, and it may be better to keep him on the floor if he plays than sit him for stretches because it could tighten up when you aren't pumping blood through it moving around. Not a bad strategy to give him a game off, but on Sunday national television, against a nationally ranked team, fully expect Harrison to show up and do everything he can to spoil the rat's Garden party.

True, but if the injury worsens by playing & we lose, oh boy. I guess I'm conditioned to assume the worst at SJU. A lifetime of being a passionate Johnnies fan can do that. :) Thst said, I'll shut up & let the pros determine if he should play.

Agree on the dunk, disagree on fouling Carlino with 11 seconds left. Stopping the clock by fouling their best shooter and letting them cut the lead to 1 with all that time left makes no sense to me whatsoever. At the very least play them tight beyond the 3 and force them to drive for 2. It kills more time off the clock and forces them to make a FG as opposed to putting Carlino at the charity stripe. And if they hit a crazy 3 worst case scenario you're headed for OT. By fouling with 11 seconds left you're actually setting Marquette up to get a W. Now we got the W so all's well that ends well, but I still don't like that move at all right there.

Agree, a win is a win. I do worry about Harrison, though. We cannot beat Providence and Butler with him at 50%. Creighton, maybe.
