Marquette Game

I doubt the conference will get more than three teams in. Villanova and Creighton are obviously locks. Xavier is a bubble team. Even if we beat Marquette, we'd have to win the BET to have a chance to be number four. Either that, or we have to pray Xavier goes in the tank.

Xavier is not a bubble team. They are in right now according to every projected bracket I've seen. Worst case for them is they lose their next 2 & go out in the first round of the BET & then they become a bubble team but right now they are 20-9 and 10-6 in conference play. They are dancing, make no mistake about it.

You all can continue to throw our arbitrary numbers like 21/22 wins is needed, but the truth of the matter is we're going to need help from around the country. We can get a lot of help from the following teams losing over the next 2 weeks:

Arizona State, Kansas State, Gonzaga, George Washington, Pittsburgh, Stanford, Xavier, Colorado, St. Joe's, Cal, BYU, Baylor, Oklahoma State, Arkansas, Oregon, Tennessee, Minnesota, Providence, Nebraska, Florida State, Missouri, Dayton, Southern Miss, LA Tech, Utah and Richmond.

Wow, not saying at all you are wrong in your list, but that is a lot of teams. Some, Pitt, Xavier, Gonzaga for example, are pretty much locks IMO so I'm not sure how their losing helps us.

Pittsburgh is only 15 spots ahead of us in RPI, a lot worse SOS.

Xavier, same case

Gonzaga, yes they are probably safe.

I pretty much took the 20 teams around us in Lunardi's latest rankings

First off, good job by SJUISBACK starting this thread.

Secondly, due to the great success and incredible feedback of the Churchill quote from the DePaul thread (it even caused moose to muse if I had allowed Lavin access to my account ;)), I give to you by overwhelming demand (ok, so I am a bit overstated) this motvational quote:
"To all of us comes that moment in life when we are literally tapped on the shoulder to do a very special thing unique to ourselves and our talents. What a pity if that moment finds us unprepared."

Gentleman, there can't be a number placed on the importance of this game. There is time to prepare for the enormous task at hand. Do not let a single stone go unturned. A victory on Saturday is the wick that rekindles a winning streak, and will propell us forward.

Xavier is already in. No way the conference gets only 3. 4 minimum, maybe more.

Got you, I just think those teams are in regardless of numbers. The numbers are for "tiebreakers" and I don't think those three are in that situation.

I think it's pretty clear. Lose to Marquette - win two in BET and pray.

Beat Marquette and win one in BET and pray.

Beat Marquette and win two in BET and it's 50-50

Win the Big East tournament - enjoy selection Sunday and start making plans for the first NCAA game.

Winning the next two would mean wins over Marquette and the winner of Marquette/Providence, unless Providence somehow wins AT Creighton which is unlikely - they're too tough at home, and would firmly position the team as the 4th from the BE on the bubble. A win after that over Nova in the semis would make it a lock even if Providence wins out, IMVHO.

If we beat Marquette as well as Providence/Marquette in the BET and also Villanova in the BET, I don't see how that's 50/50.

This Marquette game is key, if we lose, we'd probably have to win the BET to be considered.

Yeah that's what I was trying to say.

I'd change that "probably" to a "definitely."

The Marquette game is the biggest game of the season. Blow that and it's NIT.

First, I want to say thanks Kranmars.

Andrew, my gut tells me that if we lose to Marquette, then we have no choice but to win the BE. tourny if we want in the NCAA.

I know these kids would be haunted by that 0-5 start if they just miss the NCAA. They`ll be saying: " Damn, even if we could have started 2-3, we`d be in great shape.
The worst thing to me atleast is having regrets. They just gotta make the tourny then they won`t have any.
That 0-5 start would go away

Survive and Advance.

Let's beat Marquette first, then we can start worrying about the first game in the BET, win that, then look to the next game.

Beating Marquette is the first step ----WE ARE NOW in our "post-season".........Gentlemen!

It won't be easy. Marquette has a winning streak in the 30s (I forget the exact number) against unranked oppoenents at home. Hopefully, they are due in that category.
