Lavin's Future in Doubt at SJU

I'm
was he referencing this past weekend and Monday or this upcoming weekend and Monday? I need mark Jackson to start greasing Diallo's handlers ASAP!

Should be interesting. Means nothing till it happens (or doesn't).

I wonder what St. John's legend (or legends) are they referring to and are they sure they would take the job.

I also wonder what young coach the financial backer is looking for and are they sure he would accept.

What ever happens, I hope it does not turn into a circus. Know or have a reasonable expectation that the person or people you want will accept. If you stay the course or not, whomever the coach is, lay down the ground rules and progress you expect.

Finally, meetings should be happening sooner than later. Discussions one way or the other should have begun already this week.

Legend = mark Jackson
Young coach + financial backer = mass and repole?

Not great choices

Mas and the Hurleys are great choices I think.
Mark? Not so much

FWIW I think there is a better chance of giving Lavin a 20 year extension than the university bringing in a Mas. Fabricating a degree is a black eye the university won't tolerate.

I can only imagine the damage to our credibility as an institution if we had brought on Mas and then found out about his lack of a degree. We dodged a bullet with that!

Avon and Paultz:

What level of confidence do you have that this administration will make a good hire? I'm hearing via word of mouth that this may be a cost cutting decision.

That'd be BS and what I'm afraid of the most. You don't cost cut one of your most important assets.

You can cut $600,000 from Lavin's salary and still give Hurley $1 million.

But, if he is extended, you posters better shut up when things get dramatically worse under his tour.

Your post, as usual, is divisive. I do not believe that except for a few ardent Lavin supporters that people who would favor renewal don't have their eyes open. I'm ambivalent, but supported him being successful this season. You on the other hand complained about him during the season, which I find distasteful in a so called fan, but completely within your right.

Do yourself a favor. Write the university a check that would help pay for the next coach. Until then, you're just rambling.

Hurley is already making 700K plus incentives. His trajectory is higer than SJU, and he may already have a better situation as a stepping stone to his next job. I don't see it happening.

And I'd still take Mas over Jackson any day. Jackson is a terrible coach.

I'll say this once...no mas.

With our luck, the legend who'll come to coach will be Zendon.

Lavin turned out to be another looie with the program at a high level of mediocrity. I doubt anyone will come in to take us higher. Now let me go kick my dog.

How much say does a big donor like Repole have? Does the school go to him and asks him if he will kick in a certain donation if they have to pay a certain coach X amount?

Bobby is making $700,000 + incentives from SUNY Buffalo? I thought it was in range of $250,000.

Here's the difference between me and you. If Lavin is replaced, I will not be bitching and moaning about our new coach while he rebuilds the program, which will certainly be the case, and posting the same propaganda over in every thread ad nauseum.

I've always questioned the intentions of some of the most ardent Lavin haters on this board. Not the critics; but the haters.

A school like SJU should be looking at the complete package. Mas is not that. We don't need a Fran 2 here. Lots of better choices should Lavin get canned.

On that note, it would take a holw lot more courage for the university to fire Lavin than to extend him. If they do fire him they'd better already have a shor tlist and have put out feelers to see who may be interested in coming here.

I would wait until mid next week when only 16 teams remain, since more guys will be free to talk with their season is over. Should Lavin be fired, the new guy should be hired within 72 hours.

At Xavier, a single donor is now footing the entire bill for the head basketball coach's compensation. My assumption is that he has more than a little say over who remains in that job.

So if someone like Repole wanted to step up in a similar way, I would think he could.

The largest donation ever made to Xavier's men's basketball program, a gift from Tom and Genny Sedler, endows the head coaching position held now by Chris Mack.

The men's basketball coach will be renamed the Sedler Family Men's Head Basketball Coach.

Repole is far from being our biggest donor. There literally are some guys who have given ten X as much in a single check. Not to diminish Repole's generosity, which is substantial, but he isn't our prime benefactor.

Is he the prime Athletic Department benefactor, though?

He was a star at St. John's, had a distinguished NBA career, and succeeded, albeit briefly as an NBA coach. He;'s the guy, if you are moving in another direction.

We simply cannot afford to screw this up if Lavin is in fact let go.
Mark Jackson has never coached in college. He has never recruited a day in his life. The team he coached has excelled since he left and they are doing better without him than they ever did with him. He's also pretty militant and was let go because primarily because he was difficult to work with. Not to mention, he's crazy. Hiring Mark Jackson could be a disaster and that is not something we can risk.

Hiring Archie Miller or Bobby Hurley (if they would even consider us) would never be a disaster. Worst case, it simply wouldn't work as well as we would have liked, but we would have landed some quality players and got some good pub.

And Bobby Hurley is recruiting Wagner college kids and Buffalo kids. I was recruited to play baseball at Wagner. Am I the type of recruit you want the school looking at? Stop the Hurley nonsense already. And as far as SJU legends Jackson would far and away be the best choice of that lot as Mullin has never recruited or coached and would probably choose to commute from the West Coast. I hope they hbire Ron Artes, at least that would be entertaining as we suck

Marillac, if you don't mind me asking. Why are you so sold on Bobby Hurley? Listen, I get Buffalo had a good season this year. But the guys been a head coach for 2 years in the Mid-American Conference. I'm not even saying he'd be a bad choice. But I think the gap between Bobby and Archie Miller is huge. To be perfectly honest, I think the gap between Bobby and Dan Hurley is huge.
