Lavin's Future in Doubt at SJU

Doesn't seem like he will be back

I don't believe it, he'll be back .If they know anything about basketball they know we are in the midst of recruiting. Just give him a one year extension after next year and see how he fares.

Barring some kind of miracle (and I would put landing Diallo in that category) the cupboard is practically bare for 2015. Sampson is a nice addition, but hardly enough to make the team competitive.

If Lavin is to go, now is the time. Write off next year, and get things going for 2016.

There is still time for a new coach to land a couple of recruits and/or juco transfers. It's possible that 2015-16 will be a bust but with the right coach who hits the ground running, you could also secure some quick signees who will help immediately. Now is the time to make the move though - can't delay.

I agree 100%
Giving him a 1 or 2 year extension is really a vote of no confidence
A recruit that wants to play for Lav would back away from coming to St John's
Lav either needs to be given a legit extension now or shown the door right away
Anything short of that sets our program back for several more years

Way too soon to write next year off. without specific names, we can only speculate who they are looking at, but a new hire could not only keep the small core we have, put new life and new names on our 2015 recruiting board, transfers too.

I don't doubt the school is mulling over Lavin's future, but I am always skeptical when I see an anonymous "source." I have been cited as a "source close to the program" several times in the past, including before the Roberts hire. I only passed on hearsay which turned out to be false. I know of some other sources and they aren't as close to the program as a typical reader would think. I don't know if this the case here, but it would be wise to not put too much weight into what an anonymous source says about this program.

Just a friendly reminder that Mark Jackson is crazy.

Agreed. Brandon Sampson is a top 50 kid and guards are typically ready much earlier than bigs. We also have the possibility of getting Rysheed, CO, and ADR on the court.

It wouldn't really be a miracle to sign an Anthony Carter from USF the big kid from Charlotte and JUCO that can contribute at the wing.

With that written, I'd be fine with using next season as a rebuilding year to lay a better foundation if a new hire was made.

"The source indicated that at least one of the financial backers would like a “young, hungry” coach to replace Lavin, whereas some in the administration may want a more established name, perhaps even a former St. John’s legend."

My only fear is that we let the inmates run the asylum. I get it, every school needs financial support from their fans, alumni, etc. However, financial contributions should not automatically give people a voice in decision making.

Just my opinion though.

Agreed.

He was a star at St. John's, had a distinguished NBA career, and succeeded, albeit briefly as an NBA coach. He;'s the guy, if you are moving in another direction.

I'm
was he referencing this past weekend and Monday or this upcoming weekend and Monday? I need mark Jackson to start greasing Diallo's handlers ASAP!

Should be interesting. Means nothing till it happens (or doesn't).

I wonder what St. John's legend (or legends) are they referring to and are they sure they would take the job.

I also wonder what young coach the financial backer is looking for and are they sure he would accept.

What ever happens, I hope it does not turn into a circus. Know or have a reasonable expectation that the person or people you want will accept. If you stay the course or not, whomever the coach is, lay down the ground rules and progress you expect.

Finally, meetings should be happening sooner than later. Discussions one way or the other should have begun already this week.

Legend = mark Jackson
Young coach + financial backer = mass and repole?

Not great choices

hope those are not the 2 choices...

Except for the fact that he hasn't had a relationship with the university for years, is a street corner preacher, and alienated an entire franchise.

Avon and Paultz:

What level of confidence do you have that this administration will make a good hire? I'm hearing via word of mouth that this may be a cost cutting decision.

you're ok with the probability of losing Sampson? Writing off next year would be an understatement. If you let go of Lavin, Jordan and Obekpa- from mixed/doubtful to definitely gone.U lose Samson, a 4 star recruit. An next year is not just a throwaway, its a potential winless year in the Big East. Is everyone here prepared for that set of dominos?

Not saying it's an easy decision, but this scenario has to be contemplated.

that's not necessarily a bad thing. we threw $ at Lav and have 0 NCAA tournament wins in five years. lowering salary means we may get a guy who isn't heralded but I don't mind that

I don't believe Diallo is coming anyway
Sampson can be convicted to stay w sju.
And I truly don't know what to make of RJ.

But all of those things are happening irregardless of who the coach is. Just like we'll be rebuilding no matter who the coach is.
So, yes, if we're starting over I'd prefer someone in charge who has a more organized style of play and is a better program manager.

That'd be BS and what I'm afraid of the most. You don't cost cut one of your most important assets.

I am amazed that some posters are worried about our Recruiting if Lavin isn't given an extension? Why?

i think one thing that even the most fervent LAVINITES concede is that he cannot Coach his way out of a paper bag.

Calipari could give Steve his whole incoming class of 5 McD All Americans and Lavin would still finish 7th in the BE NEXT YEAR. Maybe, not that high.

Lavin had enormous talent at UCLA every year and still could not win, even at the lofty standards of that Program. And, some of that talent he inherited from Harrick, his predecessor . just like here.

Judging by the commentary on the site here, it seems unlikely Mark Jackson, is the Legend being spoken about..Which would mean, who else? Chris Mullin?

Almost as bewildering are the folks who really aren't sure about Lavin, wanting to give him a buyout at lower terms? What does that accomplish? And, why would they give and him take, such a 1/2 loaf offer? To me, it's a yes/no decision. Hopefully NO!

This year there is a lot of young talent available in the Coaching ranks, why miss out on one of the up and comers? Those pooh poohing the Hurleys or Miller, ought to slap themselves.. It would not be surprising to see all these guys wind up with a very high profile job, if we don't grab first.

If the Arizona State job is open? Can't you see Archie landing in that Conference to compete with his Brother? Kind of like the Van Gundys in the NBA?

The POLL results were baffling to me.. I think many here have very minor aspirations of the Program, after so many years of lousy BB..

There are, however, those of us who were around for many of the Years when ST JOHN'S was a respected Team, against any level of Competition. Kentucky, Kansas, UCLA, DUKE were not teams we ran away from at all. And, I'm not just talking about the MULBERRY JACKSON years either.

So, accepting this Coach for these minor financial considerations isn't worth the dialogue in my mind.

But, if he is extended, you posters better shut up when things get dramatically worse under his tour.

Mas and the Hurleys are great choices I think.
Mark? Not so much

FWIW I think there is a better chance of giving Lavin a 20 year extension than the university bringing in a Mas. Fabricating a degree is a black eye the university won't tolerate.

If Lavin is gone, so be it. Personally, I think that wold be a mistake. But if it happens, I do not want to compound the mistake by bringing in one of the Hurleys, or worse, Masiello.

And as one other poster asked, I don't have much confidence that SJU will make the right decision if Lavin is replaced. I don't like hearing of a power struggle between a financial backer and whoever (Monasch? Gempesaw?) That does not bode well for us.
