Lavin's Future in Doubt at SJU

@RogRubin: Steve Lavin and St. John's are in conversations related to a possible extension.

Rumor floating that Lavin proposed taking a pay cut...

@SammyAlbano
Even @ significant decrease in pay as @SJUCoachLavin proposed @StJohnsBBall & @StJohnsU will find that most expensive thing is cheap help

Doubt this is true but if so only shows that coach is committed to the school more than school is to coach. I gain more respect for coach and lose more for the AD. Also once again the going cheap theme which is bound to keep us in the mediocre category for the foreseeable future. Once again St John's handling of coaching decisions = disaster!!

Fr. Harrington has TONS to answer for....from the minute coach C. left. Disaster.

Andy Katz talked to Lavin and posted this today.

Nooooooo

What's the video say? Can't watch it for some reason

says he spoke to lav and he is very confident he will remain coach. 2 million dollar buyout clause is one of the reasons why. and just referenced how he was confident in his status following the SDSU game

This has not been disclosed before. As I mentioned earlier in the season, the school is not likely to eat $2 million plus pay another coach. They will view this as no harm to give him one more season to prove himself, and any extension would not have such a generous buyout.

I agree. The cost of the buyout, and the school's financial position, was always going to be be the biggest hurdle to any coaching change this year.
But I would be shocked if coach Lavin signed a short extension with a lesser buyout for next year. The writing would be on the wall, and he would know that chances are the team will struggle next season. Lavin and his agent will play hardball. And its already begun if you look at the leaks, the interview with Katz, the meetings with TV networks, the ASU rumors, etc.

If Lavin left for ASU, the buyout would not come into play. This would probably make a lot of people at SJU happy, at least those who favored termination except for the cost of buying him out.

If LAvin stayed he would be in no position to bargain hard. The school has lowered confidence in him, and his buyout would be much more modest. If he didn't perform next year as his leverage, he'd only be hurting his reputation going forward.

Is it possible the University is holding off on a decision to see if he leaves on his own? Which in turn would save $2 mil? Risky if so

Well they better not wait to long if they want bobby, you know the saying "if you snooze you lose"

If they lose Bobby, the saying would be "You snooze, you lose a coach that would have St. John's in four of the next five NCAA tournaments but now has Depaul in the Elite Eight."

Sammy has to be the most pathetic individual in the world. He goes from feeding reporters BS about Lavin wanting to leave St Johns to saying Lavin will accept a pay cut to stay. I'm sure they have Sammy in the negotiations for his input, smh. Why can't Sammy just accept the fact that when it comes to St Johns basketball, he is Mr. Irrelevant !!!!!

So much BS. Aren't conversations about a possible extension the same as conversations about a possible buy out?

Not that there hasn't been some good things on this thread but it was nice to see familiar posters we haven't heard from in awhile like Golden Leaf and Dusty J (and North Shore on another thread) chime in.

@NYPost_Brazille: Credit to @tsnmike, who broke news hours ago about Steve Lavin extension talks. I doubted them, I was wrong.

Expected this, but was hoping for an upgrade.
He better land some good players for next year that will actually qualify.
