Lavin's Future in Doubt at SJU

Lav will be back, take it the bank...also look for him to go on a recruiting tear once this thing gets finalized...

Nostradamus, surprised you did not wait until the contract was signed to share this prediction.

Not buying the extension chatter?

No, not that. 3 year extension news is all over the place & Crystal Ball Charlie gives us a "take it to the bank prognostication" :)

I didn't really mean it to be a prediction, just more like..it's happening, it's past being a rumor, he's getting extended, not point in speculating about other coaches or other outcomes...the 2nd part of what i said is a prediction

@NYPost_Brazille: Steve Lavin and St. John's deep into three-year contract extension talks, per sources:http://t.co/1ESrA60UaK #sjubb

That is what happens when you listen to rumors started by people with their own agendas. A real journalist would have taken an objective look at the source. Shame on you Zach !!!!! It appears that you and your bogus sources are going to have to deal with Lavin for a little while longer, lmao.

"Sources" :lol:

Ha. Ah, got it.

Well my "sources" are saying the same thing... :lol:

Wanted a change but not devastated. If Lavin makes a splash in recruiting we will continue to have fun and talented teams under his watch. It's just a shame that he can't figure out how to implement an offense or use rotations with 7+ players correctly.

Golions... if Mr. Lavin is capable of going "on a recruiting tear" then why has he not done so during the last 2 recruiting cycles?

Are you suggesting that he held back his recruiting efforts to leverage a contract extension?

I think there was a bit of a lack of effort there the past couple years, and not because he was leveraging his contract extension...

The last couple of years we were not coming off of an NCAA tournament appearance and we did not have a lot of playing time to offer..now we do and those are BIG factors..

Also, as much as people on this board like to make Lavin out to be some carefree, high society, would rather check out the new restaurant in town bozo kind of guy (i can't 100% disagree with this)..i think there are many coaches that work harder than Lavin, but if he didnt want to be in the coaching scene anymore this was his perfect opportunity to take a nice exit on a relatively high note and walk off into the broadcasting sunset where life is good, but it seems he is not taking that route because he still has the desire to coach and this contract extension is going to light a fire...when it comes to recruiting Lavin still has it, he just hasn't felt the urgency, or the need the past couple seasons...He's not extending his time at SJU to endure losing seasons and struggle to rebuild, he wants to win and now...he's going to get out there and get after it, just watch...
Saying Lavin hasn't felt the urgency to recruit is not saying much about Lavin. If he would have recruited better we might have been a sweet 16 team instead of a team playing the NCAA tourney w only 5 high major calibre players and mid major backups. That said. Hopefully Sheed and CO returns and he pulls a couple of rabbits out of his hat. If those 2 return and we can get Mussina and Diallo or the Greek, we could be very good next year. But, I know there are a lot of ifs. All we can do now is hope for the best.

perhaps these rumors will "light a fire on his fanny" as lavin would like to say and we get the recruits we need.

Why/how would this motivate him? Lavin told us recently that he doesn't feel any pressure to win at St Johns. And we just gave him a new contract. There's no carrot anymore, and no stick.
You just broke your vow in ten seconds Desco. "Coalesce" buddy! :)

I'm trying Paultz! It's going to take awhile for me to break the habit.

Well, hence why many here are not too fond of him, it's like a player with all kinds of talent (Rysheed is a good example) where some nights they just don't seem interested and kind of mail it in, while other nights they are the best player on the floor

Regarding this year, we also might have been a sweet 16 team had:

1) KT and ADR been eligble
2) Sampson or Harlkess or both stay
3) Obepka is not suspeneded

So not all Lavin's fault.

These days mostly everyone uses 6-8 men rotations and everyone runs motion offenses, i think every fan message board in the country has people complaining about X's and O's...

I follow LMU closely, we have Mike Dunlap,and our offense still looked like crap (dribble and pass around the perimeter until shot clock is under 8 then force a bad shot) 90% of the time...the game is not played the way it used to be.

To be honest I'm shocked at how many people said they would extend Lavin. I was dismayed about 20-30 different times this year at how much better our team could have been if not for a couple of blunders with this roster.

I was on the fence on Lavin after year 3. The last two years have been solely about "what ifs" and "could have's." And yet with all the drama and issues I have with his on-court coaching I would've given him the extension the very moment he locked up Briscoe. But he didn't. And all we are left with is optimistic people still saying "if" and "could" after 5 years. I hope if he stays Im proven wrong but we'll see.

Contract should be something like:

Base=$500,000
Top 20 recruiting class=$300,000
+.500 winning % in conference=$200,000
NCAA appearance=$200,000
Each NCAA tourney win=$200,000

He should have been on a recruiting tear since the Winter of 2014 based on the lack of big men this season and the lack of a roster for next season.

@AdamZagoria
Steve Lavin's discussed extension at St. John's is not for 3 years, but 4 or 5, source tells @SNYtv
Also, Lavin did not meet today with President Conrado “Bobby” Gempesaw, per source.

but i read somewhere there was a five-year extension coming in April.

March

If STJ was going to change coaches after coming back from the dead to being ranked and playing in the dance, they would of been stupid not to lock down one of the two men that have said all season they wanted back in next season. Calhoun or Howland two homerun coaches that would of made us the story of the spring! Since nobody reached out to either of them of course Lavin is coming back. Why would the school roll the dice with unproven Hurley brothers or Archie? When you could have a 3 time champion, or a final 4 magnet! Or maybe go for Cluess? Just crazy talk

Archie would have been a home run and not a dice roll like the Hurleys. I wonder if the school even reached out. I would guess he'd say no unless there was a huge raise but to not even try would be a shame.

The great Wright Villanova guard orientated offence looked like crap against NC State. Nothing looks good when you cant shoot. Johnnie's against Friars first 3 games looked fine to me. Just hit the three and every team looks good even San Diego State.

I like the structure except that I would never pay for a recruiting class unless it is at the end of the contract so we never have a team as bad as we may have next year. We should pay for wins. How it gets done I could care less.

I love St. John's basketball and I attend almost every home game. I have been going to home games since the days of Brian Mahoney and have been a fan of the team since the 1970s. There is almost nothing that could turn me off from being a loyal St. John's fan.

That being said, if Jim Calhoun ever became the coach at St. John's I would be miserable beyond belief. He is tough for me to embrace on any level. Watching his nasty demeanor on the sidelines for years has built up a real hate for me of UConn basketball. I know there is virtually no chance that he would ever be here but the mere suggestion of it makes my blood boil.

I imagine Lav's meal money down in SoHo could break the school.
