Lavin's Future in Doubt at SJU

I love St. John's basketball and I attend almost every home game. I have been going to home games since the days of Brian Mahoney and have been a fan of the team since the 1970s. There is almost nothing that could turn me off from being a loyal St. John's fan.

That being said, if Jim Calhoun ever became the coach at St. John's I would be miserable beyond belief. He is a tough for me to embrace on any level. Watching his nasty demeanor on the sidelines for years has built up a real hate for me of UConn basketball. I know there is virtually no chance that he would ever be here but the mere suggestion of it makes my blood boil.

I never liked Calhoun either but he would have us within 2 years in the elite 8 or close to it.

Golions... if Mr. Lavin is capable of going "on a recruiting tear" then why has he not done so during the last 2 recruiting cycles?

Are you suggesting that he held back his recruiting efforts to leverage a contract extension?

I think there was a bit of a lack of effort there the past couple years, and not because he was leveraging his contract extension...

The last couple of years we were not coming off of an NCAA tournament appearance and we did not have a lot of playing time to offer..now we do and those are BIG factors..

Also, as much as people on this board like to make Lavin out to be some carefree, high society, would rather check out the new restaurant in town bozo kind of guy (i can't 100% disagree with this)..i think there are many coaches that work harder than Lavin, but if he didnt want to be in the coaching scene anymore this was his perfect opportunity to take a nice exit on a relatively high note and walk off into the broadcasting sunset where life is good, but it seems he is not taking that route because he still has the desire to coach and this contract extension is going to light a fire...when it comes to recruiting Lavin still has it, he just hasn't felt the urgency, or the need the past couple seasons...He's not extending his time at SJU to endure losing seasons and struggle to rebuild, he wants to win and now...he's going to get out there and get after it, just watch...

Saying Lavin hasn't felt the urgency to recruit is not saying much about Lavin. If he would have recruited better we might have been a sweet 16 team instead of a team playing the NCAA tourney w only 5 high major calibre players and mid major backups.

Well, hence why many here are not too fond of him, it's like a player with all kinds of talent (Rysheed is a good example) where some nights they just don't seem interested and kind of mail it in, while other nights they are the best player on the floor

Regarding this year, we also might have been a sweet 16 team had:

1) KT and ADR been eligble
2) Sampson or Harlkess or both stay
3) Obepka is not suspeneded

So not all Lavin's fault.

These days mostly everyone uses 6-8 men rotations and everyone runs motion offenses, i think every fan message board in the country has people complaining about X's and O's...

I follow LMU closely, we have Mike Dunlap,and our offense still looked like crap (dribble and pass around the perimeter until shot clock is under 8 then force a bad shot) 90% of the time...the game is not played the way it used to be.

I'm going to barf if I hear one more time how we would have been if Amir, Jakarr, and Mo stayed. Yea, and if Kentucky's best players over the last 4 years all stayed, they'd be an NBA playoff team. Losing NBA level talent after one or two years is expected. If you recruit those guys, you don't lament when they leave, you encourage them, and reload, and quickly. At the pregame reception , LAvin went into a long diatribe about how the team would have looked if Harkless, Garrett and Sampson were on this roster. This was just a few hours before the game.

In terms of your comments about the offense standing around, remember that we did essentially play 6 guys from the midway point of the BE season. All coaches tell players, "We rest on offense, NOT on defense". With an active, collapsing defense, and 6 guys sharing all the minutes save for a few first half minutes, at times guys just stood around. When they moved, and the ball moved, we had a crisp offense.

Vegas should have a line on this. For my money, I'd be shocked if he is not offered an extension, even though I'm not a fan. The only question is the terms. I just hope a low buyout is in the cards.

We played better offense this year with the shorter rotation than we did last year with all our depth. Pre-season no one thought we would be able to score and yet we improved in almost every category (other than rebounding). Dom deserves much of the credit but Greene's improvement also helped a great deal. I wonder how much better we would have been if Harrison did not get hurt. Prior to that injury he was all league and we would have had even better numbers overall.

I am not big on Lavin but you want to win like we are UNC or Kentucky but hire a coach like we are in the a-10, when Dean retired did they go to the minor leagues for a coach? Nope! So why do you want to go to the minor leagues? Miller has how many mid major first place finishes? How many times were his team in first at the end of the season? Remember mid major?? You say mid major coach, I say Anthony Grant! I say big time program and I want a big time coach. Howland or Calhoun! By the way Lavin has been to an elite 8 and 4 sweet 16 and sent way more players to the nba but who is counting
