Lavin's Future in Doubt at SJU

Waiting on confirmation of this may be prudent.

With all reports and leaks on both sides combined with lack of swift action, seems like there may be internal divergence of opinions. Would not surprise me if that were the case; Lavin's tenure here has been quite polarizing. Has done some things incredibly well and others very poorly. Depends on which side one sees more I suppose.

I heard from my sources that Lavin was a goner till the brain trust saw the redmen.com poll results. After seeing the landslide victory Lavin is returning by the demands of the rabid Johnny fan base.

But he didn't say anything very concrete. He said possible.

Hoops Weiss has also been around forever, and I am not sure I would always take his word. I mean he has very shaky sources (cough, lawmanfan, cough).

I believe WestchesterJoe is the new go-to source for Hoops.

As for the conflicting reports, I agree with Paultzman - patience.

One possibility is that there is internal division on the SJU committee which is resulting in conflicting media stories.

Another possibility is that they really are trying to negotiate Lavin's extension (which would likely mean that the Lavin-to-ASU and Lavin-back-to-the-booth stuff is Lavin's agent trying to create straw man alternative jobs to give him some more leverage).

It it is the latter then it remains an open question whether the negotiation will eventuate in an extension. Lavin could ask for too much, or enough that the committee decides it is better off with a buyout.

One can only hope that the committee is doing its due diligence about the availability, interest and cost of other candidates. It would be foolish to negotiate Lavin vs nobody as opposed to Lavin vs a real alternative.

As SJU1512 has very correctly pointed out, there are some excellent alternatives out there, and the school could not go far wrong with any of them. It's also likely that the cost of some of them would offset Lavin's buyout in not too many years (at which point if the new hire was doing a great job he would probably have to be paid more than Lavin, but at least he'd deserve it).

Excellent post.

They should've pulled the trigger the day after the lost to SDSU. The admin being so incompetent is reason why this has dragged along

But to give Lav a 3 year extension #sjubb

I think #SJUBB has completely fucked this Steve Lavin thing up and has now backed themselves in a corner where they almost have no choice

When he said "they almost have no choice but to give Lav a 3 year extension" I took it as that's what he is saying is going to happen. I guess I'm wrong but that's just how I read it.

lol fair enough
Just do yourself a favor and put some extra practice into the reading comp section before you take the LSAT in a few years Jack.

i don't think anyone here dislikes Lavin the person, its hard too. He's engaging and personable and obviously has the gift of gab. But as an evolution of the program following the jarvis debacle we had 1) norm who cleaned up his mess and created stability, 2) Lavin who promoted and created a "brand" again. 3) now its time to move on and become something more. If you are comfortable with the RM debacle in the NIT, the Thomas crap this season, the pelle stuff, and the playing of 6 kids 40 minutes a night due to lazy recruiting then I don't know what to tell you. In my eyes there is no excuses. Lavins been a good soldier, make it quick and painless and move on. If its bobby hurley and you aren't satisfied with his track record so far I can tell you the ceiling is higher for sure. Whatever is decided , ill still root for the team , even next seasons lacking roster.

I seriously believe there are some on this Board (not all that want to see him gone but some) who really dislike him.

I believe this is a very small number.

What I'm getting out of all of this is that they wanted to get rid of Lavin, but administration took too long and probably missed out on who they wanted or got word from the person they wanted that they had no interest in coming here. Now they either give Lavin an extension or go with someone they don't feel confident in.

This seems to be the most logical reason for the delay and multi rumors. Unlikely to be terms of the extension for this long.

Who in the administration is making this decision? I honestly believe that regardless of whether they would want to extend Lavin or not, a handful of redmen.com posters care more and understand more about what the best thing to do is. I believe that I do and I did not even make it into the top 64 of posters.
