Lavin Contract Extension

Since it has been 4 years we should ask the question Is the SJU men's bb program in better shape than when he took over?
Since under Norm we were in the toilet and we are now sitting upright on the bowl I would say the answer to your question is YES! If we make the NCAA T we will have wiped our arse and pulled up our pants. If we make the T again next year we will have washed our hands and if we have a stellar recruiting class for '15 we will have exited the bathroom! :)

I think Lavin's worst enemy is Steve Lavin. He is always making statements that build up his players and while there is certainly nothing wrong with that I think many followers take him too seriously.
There are not four future pros on this roster (Sampson,Obepka,Sanchez,Jordan). Maybe one or two. Max and Mario are not two of the greatest shooters he has ever coached.
I expect if De la Rosa signs he will be equal to any center Lavin has ever coached.I just reread three pre season college mags and not one has SJU higher than fifth.

Just curious - Were you eating Taco Bell all afternoon before you wrote that?

You do realize that "future pro" doesn't necessarily mean NBA, right?

On the other hand on the Redstorm Report show on SNY Lavin did say that Sanchez will be playing in the NBA, that's right a reserve averaging 7 pts a game will make the NBA. I happen to like Sanchez a lot but he gets killed by many posters on both boards. So for those that support Lavin in denying he makes some fairly outlandish statements and think CO is terrible even in college reconcile Lavin stating he will make the NBA. Side note to simplyred-i have commented on 3 of your latest posts. Let me assure you this is strictly coincidental. Actually I guess it is a bit of a compliment that your points warrant discussion.

Thank you
You're welcome. And in my previous post in my second reference to Sanchez I wrote CO when I meant OS (Sanchez of course).Guess it's late and have been watching college hoop since noon which now makes it 13 1/2 hours and counting (Pepperdine-St. Mary's on currently).

Surprised no one mentioned that with KNICKS and LAKERS needing coaches,LAVIN could jump there, like MIKE JARVIS wanted .... Also,if LAVIN left, TIM CLEUSS ,possibly next JOHNNIE coach(after national search comes up empty) just re-signed with IONA//

Cluess was not going to be the coach here, so I'm glad he's got some long-term security at Iona.

lol just surprised you didn't mention it faster...

I like Lavin.

He has a lot of positive attributes.

I know I am in a minority on this board but I also like Coach K (pejoratively called "rat face" on here). Coach K grew up with a dad who was an elevator operator and whose mom was a cleaning lady in Chicago, immigrant parents who did not graduate from high school, so he took a scholarship to West Point because he had no other way to go to college. So much for him being a rat face.

Steve Lavin had other opportunities and chose SJU, kudos to him, and I think we made out great with him coming here.

Lavin, is a guy with a big heart, a great family background, who seems to really like coaching at a so-so Catholic university with a lot of provincial thinking.

Good for us, I, for one, hope we keep him!

What does Coach K's background have to do with him looking like a rat?

How does Coach K's background differ radically from most of the guys who had made it big in basketball? The thing that drew many of us to bball is that at one point, it was really THE city game, where all you needed was a pair of sneakers, a schoolyard hoop, and one kid with a ball. It was an urban game, in places without a lot of green. I feel bad for kids today who don't know what it's like to simply walk out of your house and be able to head to a playground where you knew you would find a game easily, and likely have to wait winners. It's hard to imagine a guy like coach K coming from the same place, but where else would he come from? Michael Jordan had his roots in Brooklyn, with a working class mom and dad. Bird - truly the hick from French Lick. On and on.

Craig Carton is saying that the Knicks have 3 college coaches on their list: Calipari, Jay Wright, and Steve Lavin.

Maybe that's why the Johnnies are trying to lock him up

Hahaha
You think NBA players will listen to what Lavin says?

According to Carton the Knicks want to interview him after the Ncaas are over.
