Lavin Contract Extension

Good news. Even with Lavin's limitations we can not afford to keep changing coaches. This program needs stability more than anything else.

Which is a great thing. I'm not totally sold on Lavin, but I believe he is a great ambassador of our program, and he certainly has increased the visibility of all things St. John's.

That being said, I have ZERO faith if we had to replace Lavin, the administration could replace him with someone who could do a better job.

Statement from Lavin and AD Chris Monasch confirm contract talks. Monasch said it will be revisited at conclusion of season. #sjubb

How does his salary compare to the other coaches in the conference?

Definitely less than Buzz, Jay, Cooley, Purnell and JTIIII, I think less than Mack. A little more than McDermott and a bit more than Williard or Miller which makes sense given their age and experience.

One of my biggest concerns about Lavin was how much he wanted to stay in New York and how much he wanted to be at St John's. I think with the staff he has assembled, I'm not that concerned with X's and O's. He uses timeouts in curious ways, and takes a long time to settle on a rotation, but he can recruit, and that's the key. No way I'd want to go back to square one with someone else. This is really good news.

Having a lame duck coach is never good for recruiting.

But with this extension comes expectations. And those expectations are much, much higher than the first time around.

Ball is in his court.

Wait, he's got 2 years left after this season. Why the rush to renew now?

He needed ties.

Informative response.

The whole pay for performance concept seems to be foreign to SJU. Anyway, God bless him. The guy knows how to make money (if nothing else).

If you want an informative response here goes.
After this season he needs to recruit the 2015 class. They will be committing by the beginning of next year and having a coach only locked up for 1 year of their college stay would create un-easy feeling.
So by locking him up now the 2015 class which is arguably more important than any SJU class EVER in my opinion, they know the coach is there for their entire 4 years.

If SJU has no doubts as to Lavin's ability they've guaranteed the entire extension. If they do have doubts, they've given him extension without guarantees (ala Roberts). I think Lavin has a lot more leverage than Roberts had so at least a chunk of the extension will be guaranteed IMO

I'm of the mindset that one has to deserve what seems to be a decent long term extension. Don't get me wrong, I feel that the program is heading in the right direction but I doubt this was a move to block Lavin from entertaining interest from other suitors, so let him continue to grind it out and work daily on improving the program until his final year. That being said, he's a great recruiter but his development opportunity is seeking talent that gels in college basketball and not AAU all-star games. I'm a buyer of the potential extension but a seller on the timing.

Shared your concern about his wanting to stay in New York and agree with your "This is really good news."

I've got mixed feelings about this. Slightly more good than bad. But I would definitely not call this "really good news". Hopefully in a couple of years I will.

"Lavin made a little more than $2 million in total compensation between June 2011 and June 2012, according to the University’s most recent tax return" - See more at:http://www.torchonline.com/sports/2014/03/07/lavin-extension-talks-ongoing/#sthash.ppjgh7ip.dpuf

Thank you for that link. $2 million was the figure originally cited when he was hired-and the media has been understating it considerably of late. Wonder who's feeding them the lower figure?

Actually when he was originally hired most were talking in the 1.5-1.7 range and talking about how he left some money on the table to ensure he had a highly paid staff because he wanted high quality assistant coaches a la Dunlap.

Maybe that was part of Lavin's strategy all along. Purposely drop the ball on the 2014 recruiting class--and he has dropped it in a spectacular fashion-- thus making himself "indispensible" for 2015.

I just looked at the tax return and yeah he made 2,027,307 last year and also got a million dollar relocation loan from the school, presumably from his first year. His base salary is 391,565 on the return and his other reportable compensation was 1.4 million.

. He's a diabolical genius LOL

Since it has been 4 years we should ask the question Is the SJU men's bb program in better shape than when he took over?
