Landing Spots for SJU Transfers

I said it before and I'll say it again, I believe that Earl had the perfect role on this team to suit his skill sets and his (high) energy level. I think CMA did a masterful job helping Earl improve his game(Earl also worked very hard on improving his overall game, especially his shot) and utilizing him in a way that was best for both the team and the player. Maybe he will get more PT at SD, but I don't see his overall numbers improving very much from what they were here over past 2 seasons.

This is a big step down going to San Diego from SJU. It’s not San Diego State. He’ll get more playing time but a lot less exposure. There won’t be TV coverage unless they’re playing Gonzaga or St. Mary’s.

Sorry to see him go also. I thought Mike Anderson's misuse of Earlington was a mistake on the coaches part. Earlington was a much better overall player than Cole and a more experienced played than Wusu.

misuse of Earlington???  Earlington was not a Cole replacement,  Earlington should have been down in the paint and taking open threes only when given.  Wusu is a ton better handling the ball, attacking the rim and in transition.  I think Earlington got the maximum minutes deserved.  If he wanted more minutes he should have been rebounding and fighting for balls off the glass instead of planting on the perimeter waiting for a kick-out from Dunn for a 3.  He was a good player off the bench and had a surprisingly good shot from outside but did not want to play a 4/5 role which frankly is what he’s built for skill-wise.  Good luck to him and at a level like San Diego I’m sure he will probably get more of a role doing what he thinks he should be doing.  At the Big East level-though, he is not a shooting guard like he believes he is.

I wish Marcellus much success at San Diego but I fear that he may soon discover that the grass is not always greener on the other side of the street.

As The Honorable Monte has previously posted Marcellus' game was tailored for CMA's style of play.  If San Diego does not play a high energy - uptempo style then Marcellus may regret his transfer.

Earlington did a tremendous job working on his game and showing that he was able to play in the Big East. He's become a capable player who could be a rotation player at almost every Big East program but a starter at none. His appropriate role at this level was as the 7th or 8th guy off the bench. If he wanted more playing time and the opportunity to be more of a featured guy then I totally understand his transfer to a lower level and wish him success. Nothing wrong with that at all. I don't really understand why anyone thinks Marcellus got significantly less minutes than he deserved or should be promised a larger role as an incentive to stay at St. John's. I personally thought he exceeded all expectations he had coming in and was thriving here for the most part.

I object to promoting Monte to the "honorable" Monte, for obvious reasons.

As for San Diego, something is going on there - I believe they also got a transfer from Pitt.  I love Marcellus and I hope he shines there.  Great kid, easy to root for.

Yeah its called 75 and sunny everyday.  That's whats going on there!

Best of luck to all these guys...Carraher, Josh, Marcellus, McGriff, Cole...and GW and Moore wherever they wind up. But although Cole has yet to land, this seems clear evidence that CMA molded a group of mid-major kids into a solid and competitive Big East team. Posh, Champ, Moore, Dunn, and Wusu were the only BE-caliber players on the team.
And this is why, despite the turmoil and uncertainty this freebie transfer rule has caused, I'm confident that CMA and Staff will build a better team to compete in 2021 - 22.
Let's go Johnnies.

I think that's unfair to some of the guys leaving, especially Williams and Earlington.

Marcellus and Greg very definitely Big East caliber players as proven over two years of very solid Big East play.

I don’t agree with much of your post although I do think CMA did a great job securing the most out of the talent he had.  But you lose all credibility when you suggest Williams is not a Big East caliber player .

Poorly written and unclear on my part: I meant to say both GW and Moore were also Big East players, whom I think will land at high major programs.
Marcellus too although he's not the player he thinks he is, but he was key to our team and he'll be missed.

I believe both kids wanted to be within the delivery area for the DDD legend OB Noodle House.

Always a crapshoot to try to guess why kids decided to leave and go where they did. The Duke gave us great energy, was probably our best post defender and hit a surprisingly good percentage from three, including some big ones. If he wants to play overseas, he sees his best chance as a wing who can hit the three and can't argue with that but not what we needed hence reduced minutes from soph to junior year. Interestingly, SD was last in three point attempts in league that takes a fair amount. Would not be at all surprised if Duke was told they need him to shoot a lot of threes and perfect climate doesn't hurt. Godspeed and good luck, you were a Johnnie who did the uniform proud!

They won an NCAA tournament game a lot more recently than our beloved school.

You mean you aren't moving to San Diego so you can more closely follow his journey to the NBA?

The San Diego hoops board just got a new member with the screen name  “ The Toreros Terror “.     I think we all know who that is :)
