Keeping Up With Old Friends Thread

Funny thing about Anderson is that when the rumors were out there that he was about to get fired, Soriano and I believe Storr said they wouldn’t play for any other coach. Of course, that lasted all of 30 seconds. But still, I wonder if the environment under him wasn’t as toxic as some portray. I don’t miss him- Pitino is light years ahead of him—but I wonder if the toxic environment story got blown out of proportion.
Things like the severity of a “toxic environment” are very subjective but it was toxic enough for Father Stanley to view a practice with disgust. Couple that with the obvious body language of some players on the court and especially in huddles and call it what you will, but the “toxicity” was pretty much obvious. Couple that with Coach Macon’s confirmation regarding the attitudes of the potentially returning players and there you have it, IMO.

You're right, it is all subjective and relative. The whole Anderson episode in the end was bizarre, to say the least. In terms of toxicity, I remember Chris Obekpa refusing to go into a Big East game- doesn't get much worse than that. But Lavin got shown the door, too.

Willie Wolters, the Loughlin guy second from left, was involved in a championship game at Fordham v Molloy. He was a bench player on that Larry Lembo
Larry Lembo Jr. Was my son's cyo coach and Lembo Sr. Was at most games cheering on his grandson. What a career he had. His numbers at Manhattan were off the charts and he also was very successful as a referee. I think he did final fours?

As he should have, as Mullin should have, as Roberts should have, as Jarvis should have, as Fratello should have, as Mahoney should have; quite a litany of poor hires all in a row!!

Yes he did several Final Fours. He was considered in the top 3-4 referees in the East along with Gene Monge & Mickey Crowley. Larry was a phys Ed dept chair at Queensboro Community College. He hired my wife to be their first part time athletic trainer.

CMA was fired for going 7-13 in the Big East. If he’d gone 13-7. he’d still be here.

Really? Fraschilla (22-10 overall and 13-5 Big East), Lavin (21-12 overall and 10-8 Big East and Mullin (21-13 overall and 8-10 Big East) were all fired after making the NCAA’s. As you can see Fraschilla had 13 wins (not to mention that Mullin was a living legend) so there are precedents that would seem to dispute your theory.

Mickey Crowley always seemed to screw us. Lembo on the other hand was a very good ref.
Crowley was a good ref but did make some calls (Reggie Carter block that many fans felt was a Louis Orr charge for one) that some St. John’s will never forget.

I remember one game he and Lembo were doing and we were up big. We were tying to sub in the last guy on the bench (Dequiroz?) but there had been no stoppage in play for like three minutes (I guess we could have “fouled” or called a time out). After a made basket, Crowley blew his whistle and limped around like he did something to his ankle. Lembo came over and asked him if he was okay and he replied that he just wanted to get the kid at the scorer’s table in the game and waived the player in.

Left Manhattan as their all-time leading scorer, including one season at 25 ppg.

Two seasons of minor league baseball, in first he hit .271 in rookie ball.

4th round nba pick, but in a 10 team league, 32nd pick would be borderline 1st round today.

I was totally unaware he was a great athlete.

I am curious as to whether Coach Macon personally told you about the attitudes of the players on last year's team. The reason I ask is because some of the players who are no longer here were recruited by him. This means that he has relationships with the players, their coaches, and their families. Anything posted about comments Coach Macon made can negatively affect those relationships. So unless you and Coach Macon had this conversation, it should not appear on a message board as factual, IMO.

If memory serves me the ref that made that call was Dick Slomkowski, notable because he was actually from Fairport NY, Syracuse suburb.

Did I mention the name of a single player? Pitino spoke openly in press conferences of the reports, singling out Soriano and Traore as the only players who were talked about positively. Not sure where you are coming from lecturing me, as I said, I have never mentioned a single players name in regards to Coach Macon.
