Keeping Up With Old Friends Thread

I'm usually not interested in "what if's" as well. But Pitino made an extraordinary move by turfing virtually all of last year's roster, including the former big east defensive player of the year in Posh. It's akin to Lavin in his first year getting rid of all Norm's guys. I have to believe that if Pitino really wanted Posh, Storr, or any other player from last years' roster, he could have made it happen. He's a Hall of Fame coach and had big money donors lined up for him. So now we find out if his big purge paid off.
The real money didn't arrive right away.

Like most good teams our rotation w Luis return will imo be 8 guys. Wilcher, others will play spot minutes. The ten man group referenced often to wear folks down is folly imo.

Wilcher and Brady will wait their turn and Traore seems to be nosing out Zuby for time. Of course injuries, fouls and circumstance can change that, but I fully expect in BE play
Rick will go with 8 man rotation & some nights 7.
Mostly agree and anticipated that Rick would shorten bench once Big East season started. He does have to remain true to his word to reward good practices with minutes to keep effort in practice at optimal level, which improves team.

Rick was very generous in providing not ready for prime time players Wilcher, Brady, and Zuby ample OOC minutes to both prove themselves, improve, and fulfill promises made when getting their commitments. In pecking order, Zuby most important as a true big man backup to Soriano. Depth at center gets you far, and agree in many situations Drissa provides more on the court except height. Wilcher is slightly ahead of Brady, but Conway prob more reliable than both in pressure moments.

Not 100% sure Alleyne as starter is permanent. Essence of PHD is door wide open for Dingle to reclaim starter's role if not starter minutes. Alleyne in any event will see loads of deserved minutes and hard not to like him.

So definitely shorter rotation in most BE contests, but unlike Lavin's teams, where the falloff after 6 or 7 was an absolute chasm, there is real talent throughout the roster.

Rough game for Quinn Slazinski, 4pts, 2-10 from the field, 0-4 from three in one point loss to Radford.

Jack, it's a nice gesture on your part but in no way will we put together video tribute to two guys who transferred out, especially from a bad team. You may not be aware but Wusu also had his moments off the court in a tumultuous season getting involved in a not so secret locker room altercation with a team manager - you know, the guys who set up chairs, provide towels, drinks, warm-ups to players, and help set up practices, all for no pay. It was brief and overblown (a student team manager, not a coach, and a shove not an assault), but also emblematic of a team out of control and disrespectful of authority.

Anyone wishing to ardently wish them well can show up when we play them and warmly applaud them when they are introduced. It would be a classy move, then we we root like hell for our guys to beat them.

I appreciate the thoughtful response. You actually think Yukon is going to play a tribute video for Alleyne? Or that we are going to play a tribute video for Posh and Wusu- neither of whom graduated from SJU, and the the latter of whom allegedly assaulted one of our coaches? Really??
Yea really.

We’re not putting their jerseys in the rafters of Carnesecca. We’d be thanking them for playing several years for our school.

If posh came back two years from now and sat courtside at a game, we’d put him on the big screen and everyone would give him a hand, why is that so different from putting him on the screen and saying thank you posh when he comes to play us this season?

Wusu may be a little different if that whole shower story is true.

Dillon Brooks literally got cut by the grizzlies but they still threw him a video. It’s a nice thing to do I don’t really see why anyone would be against it. You throw a couple highlights together and say thank you and the crowd gives them a hand.

Ah, the optimism and naïveté of youth.

Why does it matter if they were on bad teams? I recall the crowd at CA being very thrilled when Julian Champagnie got put on the big screen.. was he not on mediocre St. John’s teams?

And why does it matter if they transferred out? They committed to this university to play for Mike Anderson and fulfilled that for 3 years. Mike got fired and they ended up finding somewhere new to play. To me that does not render them ineligible from receiving a brief thank you when they come to play us

Has any school had a tribute video for a player who transferred out in the history of college basketball?

Posh was part of the dysfunction of last year's team. Hard to even say he played particularly well or handled the circumstances well. It's way too close in time/memory to actually do a video tribute to him.

In general, I think we should always be recognizing former players at the game. We do an awful job at this. Obviously we should continue the "Celebrity Row" thing that MSG has, but we should also have an "Alumni Row" for notable alum of both the program, sports teams, and people who would be good to recognize. Posh getting a quick thing for that in five years is fine by me.

You guys are getting so hung up on the transfer part of this, as if transferring in CBB hasn’t undergone immense changes the last few years. Guys are moving all over the place. Who cares. They still played for us for 3 full years. Posh was a DPOY, ROY and is top 10 all time in steals in a SJU uniform. Acting like he’s not worthy of a thank you on a big screen when he comes to play screams that you’re still bitter that we weren’t good when he was here.

But if being on a good team is a prerequisite to get some love from the school, what SJU player from the last 20 years gets love? Lot of players have walked through those doors the last two decades and none of them have won shit. Not a single NCAAT win for any of them.

Everyone was part of the dysfunction last year. But he still completed his third season on our team. Played hard.

Don’t understand the timing point. Whole reason I was thinking of this is because Dillon brooks got a thank you and dude was definitely a part of his fair share of “dysfunction” in Memphis. It’s more common nowadays to thank a player for their time. It’s a quick thing to do during a timeout

There were parts of last year where he did not play hard. I also don't think anyone, outside of Soriano, should be getting a tribute video from last year's team.

Dillon Brooks got a tribute video because he played six years with the team and had three playoff appearances. Outperformed expectations big time as a 2nd round pick. He absolutely deserved it.

I asked if a video has ever been done for anyone - ever. I’ve never seen one, but maybe this has become a thing? Why that generated another diatribe about Posh I’m not sure.

Does your four paragraph response that didn’t answer the question mean you don’t know? Or did Dillon Brooks get a video tribute in college? I think that’s what you are saying?

And I don’t think those of us who want to move on from those that left are the people hung up. We are the ones who want to move on and live in the present.

On the other hand you posted about Posh, and Wusu, neither of who play for SJU or UCONN, in a UCONN/SJU thread.

Talk about hung up!
