Keeping Up With Old Friends Thread

Was just watching Butler-G'town...Posh came down, the kid covering him laid off him five feet even when he got in the lane, and Posh pulled up and shot an uncontested airball from 12 feet. LOL

Same as it ever was.

I liked Posh when he was here but he refused to do what he had to do to stay -- if he ever actually wanted to.

It already sucks having to hear about him every day but I hope to God it stops after this season. May as well just long for one of our many more talented players at that point.

Admittedly, what keeps the Posh conversation going is that so far is that in our 3 losses we were crushed by bad defense, notably guard play. I don't recall any player ever torching Posh, actually can't recall him getting beat off the dribble. Add in the fact that at his height 4 rebounds per game is pretty impressive (esp offensive boards) and 4.7 assists over his career also laudible.

The glaring stat is 3 point shooting. Abysmal for a guard, but it's possible with some work and better shot selection to improve.

It's classic spilt milk because our glaring weakness this season is what Posh does well - defend. Maybe even Rick has had private second thoughts on this matter but probably not. Last year's finish reflected the off the court mess and Rick had to clean that up. Posh wasn't blameless but also wasn't the biggest problem.

In the end, he was a fan favorite, so nothing wrong with rooting for him, except that bottom line is he isn't here and our guys better start playing D.

In simplest terms, Posh is a good college point guard who had his struggles last year, as he was allowed to play off the ball, post up a lot. Since he was a kid, his game was premised on aggressive play, overpowering opponents while not gifted with outside shooting ability. Whatever the reason, he has moved on and enjoying a solid season so far for Butler.

I enjoy seeing how kids who leave us work out, but not interested in “what ifs”. Let’s be honest, if Rick and Father Shanley had not fallen in our lap, the program would probably have continued to decline. Nothing is certain, but who can argue with the fact that this duo gives us a far better chance of succeeding. There are always casualties in these circumstances and unknowns. Playing “Back to the Future” has no upside for me, but wish Posh, Storr, etc the best of luck.
Beat “Snake” Miller & X tonight!

I'm usually not interested in "what if's" as well. But Pitino made an extraordinary move by turfing virtually all of last year's roster, including the former big east defensive player of the year in Posh. It's akin to Lavin in his first year getting rid of all Norm's guys. I have to believe that if Pitino really wanted Posh, Storr, or any other player from last years' roster, he could have made it happen. He's a Hall of Fame coach and had big money donors lined up for him. So now we find out if his big purge paid off.

+1000. My buddy RedstormNC created this excellent thread two years ago for just that reason. Many of us like to keep tabs on anyone who wore the Johnnie uniform and root for them to do well in wherever their game/life leads them. Simple as that.

David Jones with 26 points (8-8 from the line) in Memphis dismantlement of #22 UVA. Averaging 21 ppg on 40% from three and 82% from the line through 11 games. Probably best suited for Hardaway's freelance style of play. He can clearly go ice cold from three as we saw last year, but off to a very hot start.

Big takeaway for me from this thread, for the most part, is that we have had a series of coaches over the past decade and a half +/- who did not know how to properly use the kids they had. Like others here, I like to see how some of the kids who were here make out, but I do not dwell on the what ifs... other than that if we had a real coach over that time, we probably would not have such a deep chasm to climb back up.

This may not count as old friend

man, don’t watch the rest of the game because he’s playing fantastic.
Upon reflection, this was probably a douchey thing for me to post. I liked Posh just fine for what he was when he was here, I just got a little PTSD when I saw the Georgetown kid lay off him by five feet IN THE LANE. Spent many a night yelling at my TV over that when he was here. He played well last night.

Not “akin” to Lavin getting rid of all of Norm’s guys as there was no portal with immediate eligibility back then and we brought in 10 transfers.

Point taken on the transfer portal. But it remains the case that Pitino had a group of high major talent who had already played together and decided not to keep them. Yes I know- he wants to change the culture. But winning is important for momentum and NIL fund raising. As I said, we will soon find out if the Big Purge worked or not.
