Keeping Up With Old Friends Thread

Yes, he plays in lower conference and injured a lot here, but those stats impressive nonetheless. Also, he was always a solid teammate, easy to coach guy, a far cry from our two transfers Imo.
He was a solid citizen here, yes. But he was frustratingly disappointing on the court. He’s probably playing at the right competitive level for himself now.

Not a guy who needed to be scoring to have an effective game. Too often our guards/wings on the court have had that issue. Smith, coburn, Pinzon, Jones etc. if they were cold on offense they were/are bad overall.

Greg rebounded, defended, never held the ball too long when he had it and always had to be respected when he didn’t. He may have left many ‘wanting more’ but there’s always a place on a team for guy who doesn’t need to score while having positive impact. Especially ones that don’t throw hands up in the air when a teammate misses him, drops a pass or takes a bad shot.

Actually, the year before he transferred he averaged just under 10 ppg, shot 46% overall, 45% from three and 73% from the line remarkably close shooting percentages to his numbers this year. His real problem that year with SJU was staying healthy which apparently plagued him his first year with Louisiana as well; but not this year.

Yes he had some moments. And he was oft injured. But he never played up to expectations and never was aggressive in asserting himself. Many anywhere championed him because of his charity efforts and promise but, respectfully, to say he did not fail to play up to expectations is revisionist.

RMW, respectfully this is nonsense IMHO, look at the numbers. Would you have preferred he was "assertive" like Curbelo? IMHO, we would be far better off (as would Posh) with a backcourt of Greg & Posh this year. Greg was a better two guard than Pinzon, Mathis or Posh/Curbelo.

Agreed NCJ. Greg Williams made himself in to a nice basketball player. He did a lot of little things well. Never tried to do to much. Having said that, some of the issues that RMW brought up were true of GW early on, but not by the time he left.

Gréât kid and I was upset when he left, the same as I was with Earlington and many of the other players who departed following CMAs second season, as they all improved year over year and were good kids and excellent role models of SJU, especially Greg. I am of the school that believes players do improve over time both through coaching and their own desire to improve and play more. However, very few were sad to see him go as he just never seemed to get over the hump, the Creighton game , and a couple of highlight dunks, being the exception. Everyone seemed to say he went down to the correct level.
Could we use a healthy Greg Williams this season no doubt, but perhaps Pinzon and Storr should have had more of Andres minutes from day one and we would be a better team and we would not be discussing whether Greg would have assisted us as a fifth year senior.

We’ll agree to disagree on him Re on court performance. Being assertive or appropriately aggressive on court doesn’t mean being reckless, clueless and selfish like Andre. Greg just never really stepped up and led. Or come up big when needed. We have no argument that he was a great kid and credit yo the program. I in no way want to demean the kid or disrespect him. Im just commenting on his bb impact on this team.
