Kansas St., Sat., Dec. 7, 11:30am, FOX

What a great win on an important day in the history of St. John’s! We couldn't have lost. Thanks to Zuby, and an overall team effort, including the bench. With Lou watching, with so many greats we've watched over the years in the house, we had to have this game. Obviously important for the resume as well. Great 2nd half. Can't wait to see this team put 2 really solid halves together against some of the other really good BE teams.

I was really impressed with our team today. Lou Carnesseca was an exemplary coach and leader and it's an honor to have him forever linked with our program. There was a lot extra juice associated with this game which is very motivating but, psychologically, that could be challenging for the players in certain ways. Pitino said he would never forgive himself if he lost today and I'm sure the players felt similar, unavoidable pressure, as well. When we fell down by digits, it could have been easy to tighten up too much or panic, but they kept fighting and really broke through in the second half. An outstanding 53 point second half where we outrebounded Kansas State 27-16!

The crowd was great and super involved, too. Nice ovation for Deivon when he entered, nice chant for Zuby when he got up after getting injured, etc. The student sections were completely full with loud students behind both baskets. Anecdotally, it seemed like there was a good portion of younger people in the crowd near me. I LOVE our older fans who have stuck with this program through thick and thin but we need the energy from the next generations, too. Great job by the school and a game and environment I won't forget. I hope that they can continue to build on the turnout.

I liked what I saw from our backcourt today. Kadary's midrange game looked great and he hit all of his free throws. His shot looked more natural and like it had less of a hitch. His turnovers were concerning early in the season but only one turnover today and only 1.8 per game over the last 5 games. Once he starts finishing around the rim, he will be that All-American level player. Good to see Wilcher bounce back with a strong game against a power conference team. A midrange jumper from Wilcher is one of our best looks. Smith brings a ton of energy and pulled down 9 rebounds in 22 minutes. And how can you not love Zuby?? He was completetely dominant today, excellent all around game from him.

Obviously, 11am games are a problem for us. Overly emotional from pregame ceremonies and just trying too hard to start. Some very nice runs in both halves, but 54 points to 32 in 2nd half.

Signature game by Zuby, nonstop motor and effort, breakout game by Sim, and team 16-17 from line.

Won a game we had to have and did so handily. Getting ready for League play. This team still doesn’t realize how good it can be.

Richmond starting to show just how good he is. He is so strong to the hoop, and getting hammered can shake it off and still get off a shot cleanly. He also has a good handle and fills a stat sheet.

Zuby got his shots blocked early by showing too much ball, which was a problem last season. Then he shook that off and showed what a good post player he is becoming. Plus he runs the floor like a gazelle as a trailer on the break to clean up missed shots, also hits offensive boards hard. He is quickly becoming a big man with a high ceiling.

Season began Zuby, Vince and then pray (pun intended). Rapidly becoming Prey for Zuby, then Vince. Prey is looking older than frosh, kinda like he looks anyway. Solid fundamentals, can bang and step outside.

Don't count out Vince. This kid can play a little at 7ft 1.

When was the last time we could say that about 3 sju big men? Ever?

Today RJ was human but more than good enough. Don't think other teams aren't watching his highlight reels and focusing on stopping him.

More to say on players but enough for now.

Coach, with his (much nicer custom) ugly sweater choked me up ( and again writing this) when he took it off, and carefully holding it like you would the American flag, laid it to rest at midcourt. It hope the sweater makes it into the Looie display cases behind the statue.

Rick just became our classiest coach, well, since Looie.

did not watch the game and have been reading all posts to catch up. With a bunch of new key players , Richmond, Smith, Scott, etc this team is clearly a work in progress. Will we gel perfectly ?
Will we reach our ceiling ?
In the interim I ask that we don’t kill one another and respond to every post that we don’t agree with in the harshest of ways. This season will have a lot of ups and perhaps a lot of downs( I hope not ) but let’s please try to be civil with posters whose posts we don’t agree with.

Best post game quote- Rick Pitino commenting on his sweater " Aside from all the amazing Looie stories we've all heard what doesn't get enough credit is how the heck could he stand the heat in Alumni Hall back then wearing these sweaters. I had to have the trainers put ice packs under mine today before the game even started "

Just a great day for all of us long suffering Johnnie fans; as Tiny Tim would say God Bless us every one. I know I'm going to our neighborhood holiday party with a little extra pep in my step tonight!

Kudos to Pitino for sticking with Wilcher, who had a rough first half. Sim re-paid coach for the second half start with 3 buckets during the 18-5 blitz before the under 16 media timeout. Kansas State could only get within 5 points the rest of the way. His defense on Hausen ended any chance for a Wildcat comeback.

Obviously there is no reason this team is not capable of top 3 BE finish and Dance bid & success there. Areas to improve include being more patient, rotating ball in half court, finding opponents better in transition and maintaining concentration on D. Hoping Rick establishes a regular rotation of 8 soon.

That said the Johnnies are deep enough, very physical, have solid guards, a talented big and have multiple players teams have to plan for and pay attention to. Prognosis - very good.
