Justin Simon Has Committed

Yakwe is an immense physical talent who is still extremely raw offensively. I love the kid, but think some of the expectations being placed on him are unrealistic. As others have mentioned, who starts is really not important. Not crazy about the idea of him and Sima being on the court at the same time, except in certain situations. Thankfully we've brought in some skilled offense players in Ahmed, Freudenberg and Ponds, not to mention a true point guard to run the offense, which will put less pressure on those two to have to score.

anyone see the PSA Cardinals coach calling us out on Twitter. What the hell is up with that

I just saw that particular tweet. That is one of a few reasons why I don't care where our recruits come from, per their locale. Some people are so, caught up in NYC recruits, when it doesn't matter where they come from, as long as they can play ball, IMO.

This staff has shown themselves all over the area, and this is what they get in return. Now, I know the PSA coach doesn't speak for all the area coaches, but it just reiterates one of the reasons why I wouldn't care about having a team of mainly out-of-towners.

By the way, solid job by the staff, per landing Clark and Simon. If they nab Livingston, and things break our way during the season, then we could find possibly find ourselves amongst the top 6 teams in the Big East.

I was thinking 14/15 wins next year, but add Livingstone an d we're probably top6 in the B.E. 18-19 wins could get us into the NIT as Redmennorth said.

I'd say Sima is our C, Livingston PF, Yakwe SF, Lovett PG, Ellison SF (Unless Ponds just tears it up in practice.)
We'll have a nice bench too.

Welcome Justin, looking forward to watching you play.

Nice Oldschool
We might just surprise people
Hell we might (pleasantly) surprise ourselves!

Ahmed starts at the 3

No doubt

Then who sit, Yakwe or Livingston? I'd guess Livingston.
I think Livingston will get a lot of time at the 4 and 5. We need a big beefy guy to go up against some of the trucks we come across

I really want this kid on our team

These people don't

fuck them. they game me at least 20 parking tickets in 4 years

Yakwe is no 6th man. He's a bonafide starter. Kid is immensely talented and not a kid that is going to be a bench guy much. Kid double-doubled against Big East Tourney champs and he got late start in season. He's gonna be a star if he can get his jump shot more reliable.

I like Yakwe as much as anyone but he is doing everything on athletic ability and hustle which RIGHT now would be great as 1st guy off the bench. Again not a knock on Yakwe just saying that he would be more useful as a 6th man than say Sima.

Yes offensie(shooting) to be great player must improve. But that is something which can be done with hard work and a great staff. Seems all the ingredients are there.

Though Sima needs a lot of work was thinking perhapsOwens surprises us and sima backs him up

I, too, think Owens will be further along than Sima. I think Sima has great upside, but he's a project.

Excited about Simon. Great pick up. Guys are going to really have to earn playing time in 17-18 but healthy competition is always a good thing, right? I'm probably just matching them up in my head because they're similarly sized guards, but I can see Simon and Ellison battling in practice.

Important year for Ellison and Mussini. If they don't show a lot of improvement going to be hard for them to get any minutes following year.

Agree, but we don't know how our new shiny toys will perform this year. We know Ellison and Mussini have holes in their games, that they will hopefully improve upon. We don't know about our incoming talent and the challenges they will bring, and they will most certainly have them.

Is he a pg or sg? There has been some discussion about this on JJ.

To me from the clips, he looks like combo guard. If he is as good as folks here think, I could see him running at times with LoVett & Ponds. Then you have speed, a little size (Simon) & two ball Hawks in Ponds & Simon. Time will tell. One thing appears likely, assuming core of roster remains intact, this team will have a lot of depth & flexibility when Simon & Clark arrive. It won't be too shabby next season either.

If he can play Iman Shumpert type defense, that would be outstanding!

As long as Simon can play Shumpert type defense on the ball. Shumpert was not good on help defense. But I am being picky.

t. If we get Livingston he will provide some needed beef, especially w Jones leaving. We will be young next year but we will be deep and versatile. Next year we will have a better idea of staffs player development.

I lurk and read for the most part and don't post often but I thought I would put in my two cents. I live in Tucson and have season BB tickets for Arizona. This kid DOES have a great deal of upside. He plays "D" and with a little maturation and improvement on offense (did show flashes here) he could be a very solid addition to the program.
Coach Miller only had positive things to say about him.....he left because he just wanted more PT.....
Welcome to the Redmen family Justin !!!!!!

The reality is that freshman often struggle when facing elite athletes for the first time in College. Not finding playing time with Arizona as freshman is no crime. A year off in learning the SJU system can't hurt in the maturation process. Would not be surprised if he was a double digit scorer as soph. If I recollect Buddy Held only averaged about 5 as frosh

It's not the 1980s though. Thanks to AAU, all these guys have faced elite athletes all summer.

AAU, while chock full of elite athletes, is a far different animal than high D1 basketball. I have never seen Simon play that I remember but not getting many minutes as a freshman at Arizona is not remotely career defining IMO.

I think this is a good test for CM and staff. Given a full year to work with both Justin Simon and Marvin Clark let's see what we get. Heck it was always a Louie and CM thing to "get in the lab". Well we are going to find out if a year to mature and get coached up can help. I don't see any downside since we have already been to hell. Its the "and back" part we are all looking for. :)
