Jon Rothstein: Mullin Likely To Take SJU Job

There are more rumors that Calipari will be out and Slice joining Mullin. Briscoe to follow?

A little early for April Fools Day Beast.

We now have an instant brand with one of SJU and NY's favorite son's as the face of our program. I have no doubt he will restore us to our rightful place in college basketball and as NY's team.

The Lavin haters love it. But they are blinded by their hatred of Lavin. This is the WRONG move, if true. Not cut out to recruit or coach.

And you know this how?

Great move hope for the best, he wants the job and will do it hopefully for the next 20 years ....

I could see dan Hurley come home to seton hall in the next couple of years and we develop an awesome local rivalry

Sour grapes. He still can't get over the fact that Lavin was let go.

Here's a few things to consider:

1) This wasn't about having nothing to do. He had a job with the Kings.
2) This wasn't even about getting the best coaching opportunity - he was offered a pro job coaching the Kings and turned it down.
3) This wasn't about the money. He could certainly have made more in Sacramento.
4) To me, this was about two things, and two things only
a) Coming home, and
b) Restoring our program

a) will be achieved as soon as he inks his deal. It is where he belongs.
b) won't be easy, but I am confident he can do it. I'll be there when he does, and so will most of you.

Congratulations St. John's and Bobby G. You made your first decision a bold one.

As a fan I am revitalized with this news. Succeed it fail it is a bold sand gutsy move by the administration.

And I give mullin all the credit in the world. He is risking his status as an icon to restore glory and success to his alma mata.

I couldn't be more proud to be a fan of our program today !!

the fact that people are writing that Mullin doesn't know his Xs or Os is crazy! Every coach starts somewhere, but they usually don't start with a resume like his. He will need great asst but who doesn't. This is awesome news! Lets all rejoice !!

Jujitsu
I hope I'm terribly wrong, but I see this as a gimmicky hire based on nostalgia and wanting to make a big splash. Not a diligent consideration of all of the possibilities.

Respect Chris Mullin as a person and he's one of the best ever at St. John's, but who knows whether this will work. We needed a sure bet. Just because Fred Hoiberg did it in Iowa doesn't mean it can be done in New York. Again, I hope I'm wrong.

Unfortunately I'm getting the same feeling. Then again, no perfect candidate existed

Exactly...can't miss candidates were not abundant...Mullin gives us best chance of near term buzz that none of the other candidates did...of course, he will have to surround himself with the right people...but for those of us who are a bit older (and most on this board appear to be), speaking for myself, I dont want to endure the gestation period that many of the candidates woud require

@TimBontemps: However, @HowieKussoy writes Barry Rohrrsen could join Mullin's staff. Would be a heck of a place for him to start:http://t.co/t9SlPJzTCm

Then again, maybe he couldn't. Has Mullin ever expressed any interest in hiring Rohrrsen ... or anyone else, for that matter? Not likely. More like everyone throwing out names that they would like to bring here.

To be expected. "Writers have to write" :)
